It is illegal to remove the DRM from media. Libraries purchase the rights
to lend these books. Sometimes they can only lend them for a certain
number of times. It depends on the publisher, etc. With that said, I
believe that if I purchase the book, either ebook or audio, it shouldn't
have any DRM protection. If I bought a paper book, I could lend it to
whomever I want or read it on any device that I choose.
If I remember correctly, Overdrive will only play MP3's. I don't have an
iPad but I do have and iPhone and I think the app should be the same. I
know that my library will often have the book in different formats. You
may want to search for the MP3 version from the library.
I think iTunes makes things difficult so they can sell you the audiobook or
ebook instead of making it easy for you to borrow it. They have shown this
in restricting purchases through the Nook & Kindle apps. It is annoying
but it is business for them.

I downloaded an audiobook to my computer from the local public library
using the Overdrive (OD) software supplied by them. After downloading to my
computer, I transferred (I thought) the audiobook files to my iPad. Then ..
nowhere could I find the audiobook--on the iPad or in the iTunes library.
After a bit of detective work, I determined that the files were in
DRM-protected WMA format. I understand I need MP3 for my iPad.
QUESTION: Is it legal to remove DRM protection from these files? If so, is
there free software available to do this? What is a reliable program to
use? I have the Cucusoft software which has been doing a great job of
conversion for me so far, but solving the DRM problem has me stymied.
I assume that once DRM removal is accomplished, I can convert the WMA viles
to MP3 and move them to the iPad.

I think being able to download library books to my iPad is a wonderful
thing .. BUT, I've had nothing but trouble from the beginning doing this.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't ... and iTunes seems to "hide"
audiobooks in various places ... I've had them turn up under song titles in
my Music app, and in other places too. ............**.. Also, I've never
yet found out how to REMOVE these library offerings from my iPod/iPad ...
they don't seem to show up in iTunes at all.
I'm not computer-illiterate**, but iTunes is a love/hate thing with me.
HELP, HELP ... Anyone out there adept at public library borrowing?? Advice,
please!
