The person who can connect an iPhone to Digital Cameras will become a millionaire because with an installed base of iPhones, people like me would buy the technology that can make this possible. Canon and Nikon are selling standalone GPS units for $300-$400, and they cannot call home!

Actually, it has already been done in a very unique way. I just got this yesterday so I'm not an expert but check out www.eye.fi It is very cool.

How does this let the GPS in iPhone tag the location on the photos in the
camera?

$110 unit here:
<http://www.amazon.com/Geometr- >Receiver- Nikon-Realtime- Geotag/dp/ B0019T236A
Let's say someone comes up with a solution that wirelessly communicated GPS data from iPhone to DSLR.
Running both the GPS receiver and the Wifi in the iPhone continuously will run its battery down VERY fast, and the iPhone will get quite hot.

It doesn't. the Eye-Fi is a WiFi-enabled device and uses WiFi positioning
systems to figure out where you are. Not as exact as GPS, but not bad if
you're in an area with lots of WiFi.
http://www.eye.fi/how-it- works/features/ geotagging
Eye-Fi also has an iPhone/iPad (and Android) app that can directly transfer
pictures from the Eye-Fi card (via a WiFi AdHoc connection) without needing
a separate WiFi hotspot available. I don't think the app does anything
additionally to tag the pictures with GPS coordinates.

I know what gps tagging in photos is. The eye.fi card does not answer the
OP's needs.

1) I have a video camera with GPS. It can geotag both videos and
photographs.
On my Windows Mobile device I have a GPS utility that can geotag the
photographs in a given directory. (Batch-processing before you move
from the spot.)
2) I'd actually welcome a way (under iOS or Windows) to show on a map
where a photograph with geotag was taken.
(I'd expect Google Earth to accept drag&drop locating, but it
apparently doesn't.)

It is built-in to the Photos App on the iPhone.

And useless if you're using it most of the places I would most need it.

What use are the gps coordinates attached to photographs, specially if one is shooting for leisure/memories. BTW I used to like having the date displayed on photos. Is there an option that will enable this feature on the iPhone camera?

I don't think a built-in option to display time/date on pictures taken by the native camera app is available. Although that can be a great update in the future. For now, there are apps that can do that, like Lens+, which was free over the weekend.

If the iPhone is synced with a Mac (iPhoto). If not, there are other apps that can do that such as FlyPic.

No Mac OR Windows computer needed. It's right there, on the iPhone, in the App.

FlyPic looks like the very thing I want.

A very brief web search (for "iOS and Java") found this on WIkipedia:

Contacts & Calendar Entries on iMac but not on iPhone
Posted by: "nomad4647" davcon49@gmail.com nomad4647
Sun Apr 8, 2012 5:35 pm (PDT)
I have 215 contacts in my address book on my iMac, but only 150 of them show up on my iPhone. By the same token I have entries on my iCal Calendar that do not show up on the Calendar on my iPhone. This is a continuing problem that I have been unable to resolve. Does anyone have any idea why some items sync and others do not? I am so frustrated and would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
