Well, at least that's one thing that's better in the UK. All phones can be
unlocked on request, although you have to pay a fee. I've just had my 3GS
unlocked. It cost £15 but it's all done remotely: I didn't have to take the
phone anywhere. I can now switch to any network I want.

So since your phone is unlocked, can you use LTE on all the carriers that have it?

If you mean this
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks>
I don't think it's available here, and I don't think that 3GS can use it
anyway.

What I meant is that I can use a SIM from any network.

With an AT&T iPad that has 3G/LTE, it is unlocked enough to be able to put in a Verizon chip and use their 3G but not their LTE.

I know the advantages of unlocking my iPhone but what are the disadvantages?

And the LTE we have in the US is really 3.5 G, not true LTE.

And like Otto said, I don't think the 3GS is capable of LTE, 3.5 G or true 4 G.

Only on the iPhone 4s from what I understand. It's true LTE on the iPad.

There is no "true 4G" on any phones or tablets sold in the USA.
There are no available "true 4G" networks in the USA.

The LTE available here is, as stated, really 3.5G.

Actually the 4s is HSPA+, not LTE.

If you *think* you might want an iPad, but aren't sure what all you would be using if for, then getting a good-condition used 16 or 32 GB iPad1, Wifi only, is a reasonable way to go.

On the one hand, if you find you just aren't finding anything you want to do with it, then you aren't our much money, and in fact you could probably re-sell it almost for what you pay for it.

On the other hand, you may well find things you REALLY want to continue using an iPad for, but you find you miss a camera, or fell you need more speed, or need cellular data or GPS ability.

Some of us were able to determine (or guess pretty well at) our needs before buying, but that is by no means a universal finding.

If that is the case, you will want to get a 3rd generation model, perhps with maximum storage and/or 4G connectivity, and, again, you will be able to re-sell the iPad1 for little loss.

[Personally, I hope to upgrade my 3+ year old Macbook Pro this summer, and maybe move from my iPad1 to a 3rd-gen also.]
