After downloading the free Horrible Hauntings app to an iOS or Android device, readers will be able to summon and interact with ten 3-D ghosts, including the Flying Dutchman (blow into your mic and fill the sails of the phantom ship), the Princes in the Tower (play ball with their skeletons), Bloody Mary (chant her name three times to summon her to appear in the mirror). The book is written by award-winning children's author, Shirin Yim Bridges, and illustrated by William Maughan, director of Graduate Studies in Fine Art Illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Horrible Hauntings is the brainchild of Jason Yim, president and executive creative director of Trigger, a mobile and new media company whose clients include major movie studios and blockbuster consumer brands. Yim approached his sister, Shirin Yim Bridges, publisher of Goosebottom Books, with the idea. Together they saw the opportunity to bring these historical ghost stories alive in a new way. They believe this will be the first use of this generation of augmented reality (AR) technology by a U.S. publisher, where to see the AR, you simply look at the book through your smartphone or tablet. Older AR technology involved holding books up to webcams to see the AR on the computer screen, making the experience a lot less intuitive.
Trigger had already begun using this new generation of AR technology for marketing campaigns and for a major toy product developed for Sesame Street. News about the Sesame Street project broke in Forbes in February, and shortly after, Yim had the idea it would be perfect for a ghost book and spoke to his sister. Bridges loved the idea and agreed to do Horrible Hauntings as a joint venture and to accelerate development to launch in time for Halloween.
"This project appealed to me not only because it would be revolutionary, but because kids love a good ghost story, and it's a perfect fit for Goosebottom Books' goal of 'stealth education,'" said Bridges. Each level of Stage 1 displays an overhead view of a different office, drawn realistically in pencil, with occasional color accents. Each office has a different layout of desks, conference tables, chairs, copy machines, floor plants, bookcases, computers, telephones, windows, file cabinets, and more. The Panda starts at a doorway, located against the side of the screen. He must reach the doorway to the loo (bathroom) before the clock runs out (25 to 60 seconds, depending on the level).
Touching any part of the floor clear of furniture creates a pulsating circle or target, and the Panda immediately travels horizontally, diagonally, and/or vertically to reach it. If the path is clear, he will find his own way to the target circle; players need not guide him step by step. However, if no clear path exists, he will travel as close to the target as possible and then stop. Tapping the screen directly outside the bathroom works perfectly on the first two levels, as the Panda finds his way through the maze and into the loo. At subsequent levels, this strategy fails.
Above level 2 players must analyze the maze, evaluate alternate routes, and experiment to discover which obstacles are movable and which are not. Clearly, the only solution to the puzzle is to get past temporary obstacles by moving them and then the Panda in the correct sequence. This can be quite challenging at higher levels, because moving some obstacles out of the way may simultaneously move other obstacles into the way. In addition to tilting the iDevice, players must discover ingenious methods of sliding obstacles, as touching some objects in the office may trigger a mechanical reaction.
In Stage 2, players must collect Tools as they successfully navigate through each maze. These tools, such as a magnifying glass, timer, keys, TV remote, etc., will be necessary to tackle complex obstacles at higher levels.

In taking a picture, users have access to their device's high-definition camera technology, allowing for stunningly clear photos. The camera function is available through the app, so the user does not have to switch applications to take the photo. The automatic flash feature is easily available in the upper left hand corner; the device's mirroring camera is accessible, as well, allowing the user easily to create an instant, 3D self-portrait.
Once a suitable picture is taken, a green face-shaped overlay will appear.
