Check your Finder preferences. Perhaps it shows up in the Devices list in the prefs, but is not selected to be visible? Can't think of any other reason it wouldn't show.

Turns out the culprit was the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. I chose another method to create a bootable Mountain Lion Disk, and now the USB drive shows up properly under Finder. I should be all set to go re. installing my new 512 GB SSD.
