If an iMessage turns green there are two things to consider: 1. The iMessage server was busy at the moment you sent your message 2. The person your trying to iMessage either doesn't have iMessage turned on OR the person is texting you from a non-iPhone phone.

Or the person is on an airplane in the sky or has his iPhone powered off. Those are real scenarios for why you get a green return.

I think 160 characters in Internet protocol with padding of parity bits and making of a packet along with ack message from the recipient, ends up as something like 230 bytes.
Nevertheless, in the times of massive video files, this is almost free.

iMessages cost exactly as much as the actual data used costs.
1000 messages of 160 characters each will contain a total of 160 kBytes of data, or 0.16 MB, and that's what you will pay for, at whatever your data rate is.
Not free, but almost.
For example, AT&T's most *expensive* data subscription gives you 300 MB of data for $20/month. At that rate, 1000 iMessages of 160 characters each will cost, in total, less than 11 CENTS.

And on occasion an upgrade does not go smoothly. Have you tried a Restore to r-install 5.1?
Of course, you want to back everything up before you restore.

I upgraded my iPad2 over the air to IOS 5.1, but my Iphone 3GS kept
failing the upgrade. I'm on vacation with pretty slow- to no-connection
speed. I finally downloaded the upgrade to iTunes and installed IOS on
the iPhone 3GS. my phone was unlocked and I had to restore it which
wipred out my apps, but it was time to clean them up anyway.

From what I understand, we will only see the changed 4G icon on the iPhone 4s and on the new iPad. Neither my iPhone 4 or my iPad 2 shows the 3G.

Do you need phones with a mic?
Would you prefer a different type, such as "canal-phones"?

What you are charging from, is what makes the difference, not the cable. If you are charging from a USB port off another device, it can not provide much power, so it takes longer. The iPhone wall wart is better, but the iPad wall wart provides even more power.
