Blue means they are iMessages. Green means standard text messages.

With the blue you will also see the occasional ellipses (...). That tells you someone using an Apple device is in process of responding.

Apple has pulled the neat trick in this release of providing you a tool,
called iMessage, that lets you bypass any service fees associated with text
messaging (SMS) and multimedia messaging (MMS) that you pay for separately
as part of a mobile plan. iMessage is available without any extra
configuration in the Messages app.

Messages bypass carriers' systems whenever you communicate in the app with
another iOS 5 user, whether on an iPhone or an iPod touch or iPad. For
iPhones, your phone number is registered in the system, while an email
associated with an Apple ID is connected for all iOS hardware. You can later
add other email addresses.

Start a message to someone whose phone number or email address is registered
in iOS 5, and Message switches the color of the text balloons from green to
blue, and displays "iMessage" in grayed-out type in the field in which you
tap in text.

IMessage works across carriers and international borders, and is free. When
a message is received, Messages shows the word "Delivered" in small type
under the corresponding blue balloon. An iOS 5 user can configure Messages
to also show when a message is read, but you may find you're giving away too
much information to the sender. (Apple turns that option off by default.)

I think the blue ones are for ones to/from someone with an Apple device
Green are from people with other kinds of devices.

The blue text bubbles are iMessages sent to other iPhones also using iMessage. They also incur no cost.

The blue background messages are ones that were sent via "iMessage", probably to another iPhone or other iDevice. The green ones were sent via text message to any device not capable of receiving iMessages.

Does that mean that if you have a pay as you use data I can send iMessage to iMessage friends or family at no cost to me or them. If I use wifi does that make a difference?

iMessages cost exactly as much as the actual data used costs.
1000 messages of 160 characters each will contain a total of 160 kBytes of data, or 0.16 MB, and that's what you will pay for, at whatever your data rate is.

Not free, but almost.
For example, AT&T's most *expensive* data subscription gives you 300 MB of data for $20/month. At that rate, 1000 iMessages of 160 characters each will cost, in total, less than 11 CENTS.

iOS update for friend

Posted by: "Devitt" devittad@comcast.net   devittad

Sun Mar 11, 2012 6:23 am (PDT)

A very non-tech-savy friend needs to update her iPhone 4 from iOS 4.3.3 to 5.1. Will she have to do it in increments? Would it be possible for her to upgrade via WIFI at my house? Or will she need to do it wired through iTunes on her computer?

At this point I don't know if she is running OS 10.6 on her Mac. I know she will need to if she wants to download her music onto the phone.

I'd appreciate any tips and info.

I see no reason to upgrade in increments but I would recomend doing a restore with that big a step.

I "think" WiFi upgrade requires she already be at iOS 5.0.

Those listed above would require wired at home on the usual sync computer.

4.3.3 will not update over the air; it must be plugged into iTunes on her computer.

When plugged into iTunes on her computer, she can go directly to 5.1; the first step is to back up the iPhone.

My iPad 2 will NOT upgrade to 5.1

Posted by: "Paul Deyo" paul.deyo@gmail.com   crewcheef

Sun Mar 11, 2012 7:23 am (PDT)

I have tried the upgrade many times; probably 30 or more.
This is what I have tried:
Computer is a Mac Mini running Lion with the latest update.
Wireless network is 1Ghz ethernet switch to 20gig cable modem.
Itunes is the latest version 10.6 build 40
Ipad is 2 months old Verizon version.
Trying with iTunes it sits there forever with the message: "Contacting the iPad update server". One time I let it sit all night with that message.
Trying with wifi it fails after a couple of minutes with the message "Software update failed. An error occurred downloading IOS 5.1"
I have rebooted all network equipment several times.
I have shutdown all computers so the iPad has the full bandwidth to use.
The only thing I have not tried is taking it to another network but my iPhone 4 upgraded no problem on the first try.
I have also cold started the iPad several times.

I am at a loss at this point. Tomorrow I will take it back to the Verizon store where I bought it and try it there and discuss with them. Last option is a trip to the Apple store in Charlotte NC which is 1.5 hours from here.

The real frustration is that I live 5 miles from the Apple Server farm here in NC.. Maybe I should take it to the gate guard and see if he can upgrade it!

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Is a "20gig cable modem" one that provides an internet connection at 20 Megabits per second?

How is the "wireless network" a "1GHz ethernet switch"?
Ethernet is wired.

Sorry, typo. I get 20M/sec bandwidth through Charter Cable. I have 3 machines wired to a 1G ethernet switch. I have 2 other machines and an Ipad2 that operate wireless N to my wireless router.

iTunes responded.

Its interesting that they changed the icon to 4G on the IPhone but on my AT&T iPad its still poor old 3G. But both get the exact same 3/4g upload and download speeds. I will admit I'm getting pretty good speeds though. 110 MS Ping, 5000 to 7000 MBPS Download, 1700 to 1900 upload. Thats faster than my home network

I haven't upgraded to the iPhone 4s, so haven't had any battery problems.

On the charging slowness, charging with the cord that comes with the iPhone, I found it kind of slow. I have an iPad that has a cord that has a bit more power. I use the iPad cord to charge my iPhone 4. It seems to charge the iPad faster. In fact, I went and bought a second iPad cord just to charge my iPhone 4. I asked a Genius Bar guy at my local Apple store about charging my iPhone with an iPad charger and he said its ok, that it won't ruin the iPhone or the iPhone battery. I also found that charging via a wall plug charges faster than than hooking up to your computer. Hope that helps :-)
