I've been very happy with Verbatim brand.8.5 GB Dual Layers. I used Verbatim for several years and I'm a happy customer.

I have a Brit birth certificate issued May 1950. It is over 13-inches long. I had to scan both ends of it separately because it was too long for my Epson V100.
Is there any free software that I can use to create a composite JPEG file? Since this is a one-of project I don't really want to pay for anything.
Thanx. Oneal

Some automatic document feed scanners will handle that. Otherwise what I used to do was to convert it to a jpg, modify it, and then convert it back to a pdf. Or take it into a copy shop, one that might convert blue prints to pdf.

Occasionally I get obvious phishing emails that have been flagged as such by my ISP. The true nature of the emails NWS, I often like to hop over to the phishy webpage links.
Nowadays the links have been busts mostly, seemingly connected to places like Brazil. Sometimes the linked pages are ideed as unopenable; sometimes the linked pages open to something benign, perhaps travel destinations or retailers of some sort.
In the olde days I used to like to type gibberish in the various fields and send the emails off, however those types of emails (often masquerading as bank sends) are rare.
My presumption has always been that phishers can't do anything as long as I don't provide any real info, that merely visiting for a looksee does no real harm.
True? Thanx. Oneal

I've got a utility app (Yasu I believe) to which I threw some coin when I got it. NWS that, I get a little message at each startup about making a 'donation'.
I always ignore it and go about my business. I think that I will message the developer the next time the 'donation' window appears.

I'm sure the issue is with your Thunderbird or PC end.
I use GyazMail which does not have the ability to compose outgoing
messages in html or with any choice of fonts. Encoding is set to
Western (Mac Mail).

In iChat you can also open an SMS window using the command found under
iChat's File menu.

Howdy.
Here's an Apple KB article on sending SMS messages with iChat.
iChat: How to send SMS messages

The "code" I was trying to remember in a previous reply was the plus
sign in front of a cell number. See the article.

Hmm. Encoding is set to Western here as well. I don't know what the
difference between the two would be, but I will test it out once I get
my iMac back from the Apple store.
It's interesting at any rate. I know that incoming messages in Apple
Mail are all displayed in my fixed width font on the Mac. Doesn't seem
to be so here on the pc.
We shall see.

According to the auction description all he's done is figured out how
to install Snow Leopard in a virtual machine to run within Parallels.
I don't believe that Apple's licensing terms permit running Snow
Leopard in a VM, unless it's a server edition.

He is still running 10.6 in a virtual machine under Parallels. It would
then be able to utilize Rosetta as the system is still running under
10.6 on the pc side.
10.6 can be run under Fusion as well as Parallels, to the best of my
knowledge. I can't remember for sure, but I did put OS X of an earlier
version than 10.7 up under Fusion.
A lot to spend for a little work.

As of version 4.1.1, the option to run Mac OS X10.6.x workstation was
removed from VMWare Fusion. If you can find a copy of version 4.1.0, it did
work. Apparently there is a licensing issue prior to OS X 10.7 workstation
running within a VM.

If I read Apple's license agreement correctly, OS X 10.6.x workstation
should be ok running in a VM, IF AND ONLY IF, the only copy of OS X 10.6.x
is a single VM. If you have any other bootable disk with 10.6.x, you cannot
run in a VM unless you purchase additional copies of 10.6.x. Does this
sound right?

My MAC BookPro, running Lion, occasionally locks up after it has "gone to sleep". The only way to get it back is to power off and power on.
Why does this happen?
I have it set to sleep after 20 minutes of nonuse.

Safari, Mail and Facebook

This is a continuing problem for people using this computer who use Facebook.
When they receive an email notification of Facebook activity and try to connect to Facebook via the link in Mail, Safari says "Can't open the page because Safari can't connect to the server "www.facebook.com".
If they open a new Safari page and enter the Facebook URL they get the same message.
If they try this with Opera or Firefox they connect immediately.
Some questions:
1. Why does this happen? Do others experience this?
2. Is there a way to fix Mail 4.5 preferences to select another browser as the primary browser for Mail?
We have Safari 5.4.1 on Snow Leopard (10.6.8)
