Try reducing the size of the window as desired by dragging the lower right corner. After you've done that, open a new window and see how it is.

You can show the hard drive icon on your desktop by...
In the Finder choose the Finder menu --> Preferences --> General -->
Show These Items On The Desktop --> Hard Disks.
It has been the same for the last few versions of OS X.

I recommend that you restart your Mac in Safe mode to repair whatever
the problem is that you are experiencing.

Randy,
I just got accustomed to seeing the Mac HD and when I no longer saw it I wondered where it went.
I still don't know how/why it disappeared, but now it's back and all is right with the world. :-)

The last couple of OS's came with the HD icon not showing on the
desktop by default. Apple seems to like a totally clean desktop.
There are a number of new things in Lion. (e.g. direction of
scrolling, loss of "Save As", etc.) If you have trouble with any of
them let us know. I can probably tell you how to change them back to
how you like them.

"Completely different" is not a helpful or useful description if you want to learn what that might signify.

Leave the email on the G4 for a couple of weeks and see what happens on the Mini. I think you will find all your email on the Mini.
If Earthstink is sending you emails that your about to exceed available memory, normally that does not have to do with memory or storage space. Mail on their server usually does not affect any storage space you have with them. I believe that Earthlink only supports POP email.
Call Earthlink Customer Service us and ask them about the messages you are getting. It has been too long since I used Earthstink, and then I used to get 200-300 emails a day and had 3 years of email on their servers. I never deleted any.
What software do you use to read your email? Do you open a browser and to to earthlink.net to read your email or do you use an email app, like Mail?

So I went back in to the G4 and made it download every hour. But the Mini is set to download every 5 or 10 minutes, I think.

I get my emails through Mac's Mail that comes with OS X. I never go to the Earthlink site unless there's a problem like when I got the "nearly out of space" messages.
Sorry to be dense, but are you saying that I should not let my emails download to the G4 or let them download but not go to the G4 and remove them from Mail?
When I first switched to the Mini from the G4 that's when I got the messages from Earthlink about running out of space on the server. At that time I had emails set to download only when I manually downloaded them to the G4. After getting the out of server space messages, I changed it to download every hour and I stopped getting the messages from Earthlink.

Also, pre-Mini, I had over 40,000 unread emails on the G4 for a while and never got messages about having too little space left.

> No, I don't understand lots of things sometimes because I'm sort of a computer dunce in some areas. :-( I always look at the emails on the Mini before cleaning them out on the G4. Does that make a difference? If I don't clean out the G4 occasionally, I'll have thousands of emails in no time.
> L
Do you know whether your mail client is set up to use IMAP mail protocols or POP protocols?
Do you know the difference?
POP mail is like the Post Office; in fact, the acronym stands for Post Office Protocol. Under the POP system, your mail messages are in ONE place, and ONE place only. Initially they are on the mail server. You can use your web browser to connect to the mail server, and read your mail there (usually called the web-mail interface). Any messages you delete in that session are gone, gone, gone, and will never be seen anywhere ever again.
Or, you can use a Mail program on (for example) your Mini, set up with the POP system, to connect to the Mail server. The Mini will then DOWNLOAD THE MESSAGES TO THE COMPUTER, where you will read them. Remember, they are only ever in ONE place. Now they are on your Mini, and THEY ARE NO LONGER ON THE MAIL SERVER.
If you then go to the web-mail interface, you will see that all the messages that were downloaded to the Mini are no longer on the server. That is how POP protocol works. If you boot up the G4, and run your (POP) mail program there, it will find NONE of the messages that were downloaded to the Mini.
Under the IMAP system, the messages stay on the server until YOU delete them. The IMAP system synchronizes whatever local mail programs you set up with IMAP with the server. For example, I have Apple's Mail set up as an IMAP client on my Macbook Pro, my iPhone, my iPad, the Mac Pro in the other room, and even on the MacOS version I am beta-testing. ALL OF THEM SEE EXACTLY THE SAME MESSAGES. If I delete a message on any of those machines, that deletion propagates through the system and the message is deleted in ALL locations.
I can create folders within Mail on my computer, and choose whether they are folders "On My Mac" or on the server. The ones I create from within Mail that are "on the server" are propagated through the system and appear on the mail server, the iPhone, the iPad, etc.
Generally I would recommend you set up Apple's Mail on the Mini to use IMAP, and not even look at mail with the G4.

Louise, just leave your email alone on the G4 for a week or so and see what happens.
It has been about 6 years since I used Earthstink, so I can't tell you what is going on with the running out of space on the server message. Give them a call and ask them, but I really don't think it is about your emails. At the worst, they might suggest you change a setting to delete some messages after a period of time.

Yes, we've both been saying this for days now, but it may be that Louise is
*not* seeing these messages (for obvious reasons!).
