Yes, and obviously SD wouldn't be able to make a clone in the first place
if the cable (or either FW port) were bad.
I would try making a clone with CCC (free download) and see what happens.

Did that this a.m. and went out for coffee while CCC did its thing.
Same outcome: on option-boot, only the internal HD shows up as bootable.

I think in your situation I would re-partition the disk and erase it, and re-clone.
Also, I really think you should get a second external. Having all five clones on one drive means that a drive failure would cost you ALL your backups.

Yup, I agree. Also ensure that the repartition is specified as GUID and NOT APM. This will inhibit a boot device.

This is a G4 iMac running Tiger. Can I even partition a drive GUID,
let alone read/write it?

To the OP: Download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and see if **IT**
will make a bootable clone. My very-wild guess is that something is
munged with SuperDuper, possibly a preference file. If CCC does do
the trick then either stick with it or investigate SuperDuper further.

Yes. GUID is for Intel Macs. Your PowerPC machine wants the older
Apple Partition Map. However, the advice of getting another drive,
not putting all your clone eggs in one basket, and repartitioning the
drive and starting anew are both good bits of advice. As you have a
PPC machine, though, it can NOT boot from USB, and FireWire drives
are getting harder to find. Good luck.

Earlier, you stated:

I noticed that these seem surprisingly small to me. Are you in fact backing up your whole drive?
I ask because SuperDuper! states:
> Backup all files (highly recommended) does what it says: it creates a complete backup of the selected volume. If the source is a boot volume, this is often called a "bootable clone", and can be used to start your system in the event of a catastrophic hard drive failure.
> .....
> Backup user files is similar, but it does not create a bootable backup. Instead, it only backs up user specific files in the Home directories of the various accounts on your system (as well as the special iSync files that are stored elsewhere in Panther). This type of backup is not bootable, since it doesn't contain operating system files, but is useful for storing copies of your personal data.

Yes! Usually any DVD I get from NPR. And I can never seem to rip a disc of TV Shows which has more than 1 episode per disc. I'll download the new version of Handbrake. I'm running Lion on that computer.

Randy,
Thanks for the useful information.
A day or so ago someone (you?) posted a Terminal command to get a list of applications that are using Java. I can't find it now. Do you, or does someone else, know what that command is? And if so, would you post it again? (I promise not to lose it again!)

Downsizing MP3 files?
Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com davec2468
Sun Apr 8, 2012 7:55 am (PDT)
I've got lots of 1-hour long MP3 recordings of voices (no music) that
are 24 MB in size. iTunes tells me they are all 57 kbps bit rate and
44.0 kHz sample rate.
I would like to shrink the file size of all these. Since they're
voice and not music, I presume they can get pretty small and still
retain good quality.
What utility can I use and what are the recommended settings to get them small?
Thanks,
Dave

First, I assume mono will be OK, so if they're stereo convert to mono and
halve the size.
Second, I think you can reduce to 32k without much loss, but why not try a
few settings before you decide?
You can use iTunes for this. Just go into iTunes > Preferences > General >
Import Settings. You'll need to use a Custom setting. Save the prefs, then
select the files to convert and right-click > Create xxx version.

This is not an "anti"-flashback utility; it just reports if your machine is clean or not. BTW, I couldn't find it on Macupdate.com. Flashback brings up a game.

I took it down from MacUpdate:

I'm aware that it isn't 'anti' anything, however, that is how it is named.

I would have been easy to presume that you tried it and endorse it,

I have some system corruption and one of the symptoms is that my desktop is larger than my screen (any screen) by about 15 percent.
Apple says I needed to start from scratch and install new system and then all my applications again. Sigh....... So I did.
On the drive that I did re-install everything, the screens now behave as they should but I am having trouble getting my new mail folders to show up exactly like on the older system. All of the "On My Mac" folders seem to be missing even though I brought ALL my mail folder over.
Any thoughts on how to go about doing this? Once again, I have already brought over the "Mail" folder in the library of the users folder, replacing it with the newly install mail folder.
Your thought would be helpful.

Sophos Anti-Virus Program

With all the recent discussions about the Flashback Trojan and other
malware that might affect a Mac, I'm considering installing and using
the subject anti-virus program.
I'd appreciate comments from readers of this forum that might be using
Sophos. Does it use much RAM, any noticeable slowdown in the Mac while
this program is running? Other pluses and minuses noticed?
Thanks much. I realise this might be a "belt and suspenders" approach,
but after thinking more about it I thought why not? Sophos is free and
just might help some day.....Jim

Tried Sophos for awhile. The only thing I ever saw reports of were Win malware. The program did utilize quite a bit of system resources and after running it for a quarter (3 months), I took it down and it was like having a brand new machine, performance-wise.
ClamXav is no better as far as resources go. Win malware detected, when and if there were any around. Uninstalling provided the same system performance increase.
