Application to evaluate Customer location density on Map

Hi everyone,
I am volunteering at a College Alumni Club and we have been given a list of the 5000 alumni in the Chicago metro area. Was looking for some inexpensive software that might help me plot them on a map to see where we have a high density of alumns. This would be used in selecting sites to have events - e.g. in certain area of downtown or in the North Suburbs, etc.
I know more than a 15 years ago, I was working in consulting and there were several expensive (>$5000) applications that could do this. I was hoping there might be something in the market that could do this for <$100 and which could color code between work and home locations. I have googled and seen that I can upload stuff to Google Maps or Google Earth but this seems to just plot the addresses and doesn't show density.
I would ideally like to see bigger circles in areas with more alums and small circles in areas with few alumns.
Appreciate any thoughts. The easier the software is to use the better.
Thanks,
Jay

iPhone - iMessage Question
Posted by: "Denver Dan" denver.dan@verizon.net denverdan22180
Wed Feb 1, 2012 10:04 am (PST)
Howdy.
I've downloaded and installed Apple's free iMessage app for my iPhone.
I have a limited text messaging plan via my ATT Wireless carrier.
The standard iPhone SMS "Messages" app is on my phone and works fine
(with the monthly 200 message included limit).
With iMessage.app installed I can send a text message TO someone.
However, when I get a response it always comes via the included SMS
Messages app and not via the Apple iMessage app.
What's going on?
Is there a way to use iMessage for all texting both outgoing AND
incoming? I don't see any settings for this.
Help appreciated!

Apple doesn't have a separate iMessage App it is part of "Messages" they
are blue instead of green.
In Settings > Messages you can add addresses to receive at and turn
iMessage on/off and set your "Caller ID" so that all messages go out as
being from a certain number or address - I use my e-mail as my "Caller ID"
from iPhone and iPad so that all conversations go back and forth to both
devices, as long as they are iMessage based - if they are SMS directly to
my phone via AT&T then they only go to the phone and appear in green.
You (or someone Messaging you) can tell in advance if it will be an
iMessage by entering the number or e-mail and it briefly checks Apple's
servers to see if it is a registered iMessage device (this also becomes an
issue if you stop using an iOS device and do not de-register the
number/address and messages keep going there).

Hi Dan,
Go to Settings: Messages and check the following:
1.) iMessage is On
2.) About 4 down, Receive at: make sure your phone number is entered
I think if those have been done already not sure why replies wouldn't be coming to you as an iMessage unless the party sending the message doesn't have iMessage. If they are not on an iOs5 device with iMessage enabled then their outgoing texts will be standard SMS.
However, AFAIK there is only one messaging application - at least for 3GS and higher. The only distinction between standard Message and iMessage is that when you are sending an iMessage it shows the recipient in blue and for standard SMS in green.
I also use on my iPad but I use my e-mail address for that.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for detailed reply.
Settings are as you suggested.
Problem may be that very few texting contacts have downloaded iMessage. When I first tried it I got an app with very similar name but not iMessage.

Hi Dan,
If you are trying to reduce your texting cost, an alternative might be Google Voice. I just gave my 11 year old an old iPhone but told her she couldn't give out her phone number to her friends. Instead I signed her up for a Google Voice number and downloaded the app to her iPhone. She sends and receives text through the app and it is all free. Only drawback is that it does not do MMS.

iMessage is a function of the iOS 5 version of Apple's Messages App.

That, and the possibility that Google is archiving all the messages and data-mining them.

Howdy.
Bill, if Apple doesn't have a separate iMessage app, why do I have a
separate iMessage app on my iPhone that I downloaded from the Apple App
Store?
The real questions is: does a message that comes IN to my Messages app
(not IN to iMessages) count as one of my 200 included monthly text
messages?
I assume that if I use the iMessage app to send an OUT text message
that it doesn't count as part of my 200 per month allotment.
And thanks to several posters for mentioning the blue and green message
bubble color difference in Messages (I hadn't noticed it).

Wha the???? !!!
This couldn't get more confusing.
Apple has a free app called iMessage on the App Store.
iMessage is a function of iOS 5 on iPhone in Messages app.
So if I use Messages (not iMessage) on my iOS 5 iPhone does a message
count as part of my monthly 200 message limit (which is an extra $5.00
per month via ATT Wireless)?
OK. in Settings>Message on iPhone there is a "Learn More" link which
I'm going to right now.

Can you post a link to the App Store? I see an app named "iMessage" with a
2 star rating from "UserLight" but nothing from Apple. I tapped on Learn
More link and get an apple.com page with the green Messages app that says
"Introducing iMessage. Unlimited Texting Unlimited Fun" but no mention of a
separate app.
Checking my texts against a detailed bill / messaging plan anything in blue
is an iMessage and does not count against my Text Plan, anything that is
green does.

OK.
Here's the iMessage link from Apple's web site.
http://www.apple.com/iphone/ built-in- apps/messages. html
- - - - -
Reading this I now think I can assume:
1. that iMessage.app is a separate app and possibly not from Apple.
2. that iMessage the service is built in to Message.app on iOS 5
iPhones.
3. that these names are REALLY confusing.
4. that if I use Message to send a text message to another iPhone,
iPod Touch, or iPad, that it's a free message and is not included in my
monthly ATT Wireless $5.00 per month allotment of 200 messages.
5. that if I use Message to send a text message to a non Apple device
like a Nokia cell phone that the message is automatically part of my
monthly allotment of 200 messages (more than 200 and I pay 20 cents a
message).

All 5 are about true - the only thing that is even more confusing is that
the person with an iOS (iPhone, iPod, iPad) device is that it 1. has to
have iOS 5.x (5.0, 5.01, 5.1 beta), have 2. iMessage turned on in Settings
> Messages, and 3. Has their number and/or e-mail registered on the
"Receive At..." section with Apple's servers. In other words when you go
to send a text/iMessage Apple nearly instantly checks if the recipient has
iMessage enabled for the number/address you are sending to and it changes
from green (or gray while entering) to blue to indicate that is an
"iMessage" - from there on the conversation stays in blue to indicated that
is going through Apple/iMessage and not your carrier/SMS. If for some
reason one of you loses your data connection and/or Apple can not verify
the device is "online" (turned off, low battery, data turned off, poor 3G
coverage, etc) it will fall over to SMS and count against your plan - you
can turn this off in Settings > Messages so it is either iMessage or bust
but anyone who sends directly to your phone from a non iOS 5.x device will
still be received by your iPhone unless you disable/block SMS with your
carrier.

Short explanation - SMS messages are free only if being sent AND received on devices running iOS 5.
The very easy way to tell if a text message is/will be free is to look at the background color of the message balloon.
Blue = free
Green = not free (will cost you greenbacks)

I see a free App named iMessage in the App store -- but not from Apple.

The Messages App that is part of iOS 5, if it has been set up to do so in Settings on your iPhone, will sent short messages to another iPhone using iOS 5 that has been similarly set up, using Apple's iMessaging service, which sends these messages as data, either by Wifi, if available, or using your cellular data.
If, in the course of a month, you send 10,000 160-character messages, you will use up all of 1.6 MB of data, which will not cost you more than $0.53 or so.
[1 message every 3 minutes, for 15 hours every day for 30 days, adds up to 9000 messages.]

I just finished talking to my Verizon representative. And I have a 700 minute talk and text plan, just my basic plan and it includes unlimited texting. I guess other carriers do not have such a plan and require a text package? I have always had unlimited texting on all my lines,(I am a parent),before I ever bought my iPhone. Is It just a difference in carriers?

According to their website, Verizon offers, in single-line plans, 3 levels of texting -- "Pay As You Go" for $0.20/text, 1000 texts for $10, and unlimited for $20.
In the family plans, they appear to only offer unlimited texting for $30.month. The only 700 minute plan is a family plan for $69.98 monthly.
I am going to guess that your "700 minutes plus unlimited texting" casts $99.98 monthly, of which $30 is texting.
You didn't specify what data plan you have (or, i fact if you have an iPhone), but if you have, say the 2GB for $30 plan, then texting all your waking hours, every day, all month, would use up less than 2 megabytes of data if they were all iMessages, which at that rate would cost THREE CENTS in data charges.
That gives you an idea of how much Verizon is ripping you off by charging $30 for "unlimited texting".
They spend more accounting for and listing people's usage on their bills than the data used actually costs.

Jim,
Thanks for telling me what they don't tell you. I do pay $99.98 monthly We are a texting family but not at that rate. I guess I will get back on the phone again and get the 1000 texts for $10. I think we use about that much. The other thing is that calls and text from Verizon to Verizon don't count towards your total. My whole family, kids, brothers and sisters are all on Verizon. Of course if you ask them to help you . Thanks again. I'm going to save some money.

I too am happy for this information. I knew the actual bandwidth taken
up by texting was insignificant and that it was a major source of
revenue for Verizon, but I didn't know the exact amount of bandwidth
possible was that small.
On the other hand, I would go to your account information and see just
how many texts you are sending before changing the plan. I used to have
the $10 plan, but in my texting madness, I suddenly got a bill with an
extra charge because I went over my limit. If you send 100 extra texts
at 20 cents each, there goes another $20 bill.

I'm not on Verizon, but you *may* be stuck.
On the Family Plan, the only text options appear to be Unlimited, and None.
And I suspect that switching to Individual Plans may cost you more than you would save.
The other issue with iMessaging (texts via Apple over data connection -- nearly free) is a factor that varies a lot from user to user, which is how much of your texting goes to people who could not use iMessage at all (older iPhones, non-updated iPhones, Android and other phones, etc.).

There is a $5 and a $10 AND a $20 text add-on. These are per line add-ons, not plans. I think $5 is 250 texts and $10 is 500 plus unlimited "In" and $20 is 5000 plus In. I've used various combinations of all of these rather than an unlimited plan for several years.
One thing I've learned about "cheap" plans, you must ask explicitly. I now ask reps, what is the "cheapest [fill in the blank]" you offer. It's much harder for them to dissemble, though they sometimes still try and often seem legitimately ignorant of the non-marketed options. When pressed them sometimes have to go ask, and then sheepishly admit there is another option.
Having had MANY conversations with Comcast about levels of internet service in a vacation home, I just found out they have a special rate for empty vacation homes. No one has ever mentioned this before, in years of dealing with them.
Cheers,
tod

What they don't tell you

After Jim's message, I called Verizon and actually found that my best option is "pay as you go". Ii
will pay $30 less and it will cost me $.20 per text. That will be a big savings in my family and based on past records the rep. Had to concur. Now I am set and will save a bundle.
Thanks for doing the research for me, Jim.
