4G LTE would be requiring hardware. Software upgrade to iOS 5.1 will not give 4G.

The Emperor just has new clothes, otherwise known as marketing speak.

I believe in the Keynote they mentioned that AT&T was rolling out LTE in NYC, only at this time.

But at the same time, in a separate quiet press release, they announced that they would be changing the badge for 3.5G HSPA to 4G on AT&T iPhones. Look around on Engadget, Gizmodo or one of the other tech blogs and you will find it.

Great marketing ploy but a lie. Since AT&T is only 3.5G, they should say so. It should be indicated on the iPhone. Not right that AT&T should be able to get a pass on this.

iOS 5.1 software update now rolling out to iPhones, iPads and iPod t

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iOS 5.1 software
update now rolling out to iPhones, iPads and iPod touches via Engadget
by Donald Melanson on 3/7/12
Well, it looks like we didn't have to wait long for that iOS 5.1 update
promised for today. The update is already rolling out to iPhones, iPads
and compatible iPod touches. That brings with it a number of
improvements and bug fixes, including the previously-announced Japanese
language support for Siri, a redesigned camera app for iPad, the
ability to delete individual photos from Photo Stream and, somewhat
curiously, an "updated AT&T network indicator." What's more, as
previously rumored, the camera shortcut is now also always visible on
the lock screen for iPhone and iPod touch users.

Update: As a number of commenters have pointed out, it turns out that
update to the AT&T network indicator is a change to display "4G" in the
status bar, even though the device's connectivity of course remains the
same speed as ever.

iPad available now for $4.99, iMovie & GarageBand updates live via
9to5Mac by Jordan Kahn on 3/7/12

Apple demoed quite an impressive iPhoto app today during the new iPad
unveiling, and the app is now officially live on the App Store for
$4.99 [iTunes]. In case you did not know, the app is a universal
download for both iPhone and iPad. You can grab iPhoto for iOS now
(iTunes link). Apple also boasted updated versions of iMovie and
GarageBand today that you can already get on the App Store here and
here for $4.99 each (free update for current owners). The updated
GarageBand app features a Note Editor, Smart Strings orchestra feature,
and Jam Sessions for realtime playing and recording with up to three
other iOS devices. You can read our full break down of the new iPhoto
app here.

In addition Apple updated iBooks Author today to "take advantage of the
Retina display on the new iPad" and did the same for the iTunes U app.
The updates also include the usual stability and performance
improvements.

Verizon to offer free mobile hotspot on new iPad, AT&T is looking in

Glad I ordered VZW!

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Verizon to offer free
mobile hotspot on new iPad, AT&T is looking into it via BGR: The Three
Biggest Letters In Tech by Dan Graziano on 3/8/12

Along with 4G LTE support, Apple's new iPad will include a new personal
hotspot feature that will vary from carrier to carrier. AT&T and
Verizon Wireless are the exclusive carriers of the iPad in the U.S. and
both carriers offer a mobile hotspot feature on their smartphones,
however it was unknown if the feature would be offered on the new iPad
as well. Verizon Wireless on Thursday supplied GottaBeMobile with
confirmation that the feature will be included — for no additional
charge — with each data plan. "The tablet data plans include the mobile
hotspot just as they do today," a Verizon spokeswoman said. "Data plans
begin at 2GB for $30 and go to 10 GB for $80 and includes the mobile
hot spot. The iPads have one additional option of 1GB for $20." AT&T
will not offer the feature at launch, but may enable it in the future.
"We are working with Apple to enable this feature in the future, but we
currently do not offer it," an AT&T spokesman told 9To5Mac.

Sent to you by Brent via Google Reader: RadioShack Offering Pre-Orders
for New iPad via $50 Gift Card Purchase via MacRumors: Mac News and
Rumors - iOS Blog by Eric Slivka on 3/8/12
RadioShack today announced that it has begun taking pre-orders for the
new iPad, with availability set for Friday, March 16. RadioShack's
pre-ordering method requires customers to purchase a $50 gift card that
can then be applied to final purchase once the device
launches.Following yesterday's exciting announcement of the new iPad,
I'm writing to let you know RadioShack will start selling the hot new
tablet on Friday, March 16.

Starting today, the new iPad will also be available for pre-order by
purchasing a $50 RadioShack gift card that can be used toward the final
purchase.RadioShack is also touting its Trade & Save program, which
will offer users store credit of up to $350 for an iPad 2 or up to $175
for an original iPad. The credit can be applied to the purchase of a
new iPad or any other product. Customers applying the trade-in credit
to the purchase of a third-generation iPad or iPad 2 will also receive
an additional $50 mail-in rebate.

The company also notes that it is one of the few retailers that will
offer AppleCare+ alongside the new iPad, simplifying the purchase and
registration process for Apple's new extended warranty program with
accidental damage coverage. According to RadioShack, it will join
Apple, Target, and Apple's partner mobile phone carriers as the only
U.S. retailers to offer AppleCare+ for iPad.

The only problem I see with the mail-in-rebate, as with all mail-in-rebates is that you're paying tax on the amount before the rebate. When you mail in your rebate you're not getting the tax back, just the $50.

iOS 5.1 and the iPhone 3GS

Posted by: "N.A. Nada" whodo678@comcast.net

Thu Mar 8, 2012 1:44 pm (PST)

It is awfully quite here and other Apple lists, after an Apple Keynote with a hardware and software upgrades revealed.

Has anyone upgraded a iPhone 3GS to iOS 5.1, yet?

Being that it is at the lowest iPhone eligible for the upgrade, and I am not in a position to upgrade the iPhone, I am being extra cautious. And other than one 4S user upgrading, I have seen no posts on iOS 5.1 from a user.

I had the same problem 3 times last night and so far 3 times today. My only surmise is that the servers are overloaded. Still waiting here

I have not upgraded my iPhone to iOS 5.1 yet. I have iTunes app/syncing problems I'm trying to resolve first. I did, however, upgrade my iPad 2. it's working fine except for syncing. That's because of my iTunes app/syncing problem, not because of the upgrade. Once I get iTunes back to normal, I'll restore both iPad and iPhone and all will be fine. I've got to get this done before the 16th as I have the new iPad coming.

My first attempt at updating my iPhone 4S failed to update. I then updated iTunes to v10.6 and after that my phone updated. I don't know if that is what did the trick or not.

Movies locations

On iTunes there are two locations marked "movies". The first is under the heading of Library, and the other is under the phone name heading. Does anyone know where the videos listed in the two locations are stored on the PC? I know that they are different as these two listing are different.

Thanks

Well, the movies listed under the phone name are on the phone, not the PC.

That is what I thought. I compared the two locations and found that they were not the same. I guess I thought that the phone would get the movies from the other list but it does not appear to be that way.

Also, if I go to itunes and highlight the iphone and then go to movies while the iphone is still highlighted, I do not have it set up to sync. What will sync do? Does that give me the option to choose the folder that contains the movies?

> That is what I thought. I compared the two locations and found that they were not the same. I guess I thought that the phone would get the movies from the other list but it does not appear to be that way.

The iPhone gets the things (movies, songs, podcasts, etc.) that you tell iTunes to sync *with* the iPhone.

> Also, if I go to itunes and highlight the iphone and then go to movies while the iphone is still highlighted, I do not have it set up to sync. What will sync do? Does that give me the option to choose the folder that contains the movies?

I did a quick search for <"sync with iTunes" "how to"> and got PAGES of articles on the subject.
