Calendar mashed by iPhone
Posted by: "Nick Hudd" nphudd@cantab.net nickhudd
Tue Apr 3, 2012 3:11 am (PDT)
I use an iPhone 3G (was planning upgrade to 4 soon but recent events have made me think about that). I sync with MS Outlook on Win 7 64 bit.
I have had this setup for two years, and have got used to the fact that the iPhone and the MS software sometimes make a mess of an occasional calendar recurring entry. However, at this particular change of the clock to BST last week, an entire calendar has been totally mashed up. Every single one of the "all day" entries has been changed to an entry from 11 pm the preceding day for 24 hours. It follows that, instead of appearing as an all-day entry at the top of the iPhone, they are all timed, so, as there are lots on some days, they are all vertical with text running vertically over 24 hours (i.e. impossible to read). An occasional entry in another calendar seems to have suffered too, but this is an entire year of recurrent entries completely mangled (in Outlook they still appear at the top as all-day events, but they now extend over two days with the times changed by an hour)
There is no doubt that the clock change caused it - the calendar is in daily use.
Is there any way I can change the whole lot in one go - I tried listing the entries and selecting all, but could find no way of changing the lot in one go
Help!

That's a good plan but even better, if you can afford it, is to buy a 2nd
drive for clones and alternate between the 2.

I have an external hard drive I moved my iTunes library to. That way I don't use any space on my internal hard drive space for it. My iTunes library gets backed up to the external drive I keep at my parents. I update my backup about once a month to the drive at my parents. I use Carbon Copy Cloner for that backup. I also have a 3T external hd I use to backup my whole iMac and iTunes library at my house. I use Time Machine for that one. I also have iCloud Music Match just in case.

iPhone - iTunes Settings

I've just re-installed iTunes. I use my phone a lot to listen to audiobooks which can take an EXTREMELY long time to download. In the past an Apple tech showed me a place where you can decrease the audio quality settings in iTunes, this really sped up the download time & since I'm listening to books I don't really need the highest quality audio as if I'm listening to music. Now I can't find the place in iTunes to make that adjustment. Can anyone show me where it is please?
Thanks in advance, Bob

I'm not sure about how to do it on the iPhone but if you're downloading from Audible there are several options about quality on their download section.

Help with Contacts and Calendars?
Posted by: "Brandi C" brandiable@gmail.com BKCorya
Tue Apr 3, 2012 8:36 am (PDT)
We are in the process or merging households and planning for a wedding. A
friend recently did the same thing and built a family contact list that is
exactly what Im looking for. The only problem is that we do not have a
Mac so cant use the same setup she had. Here is what Im hoping to do:
Build a single contact list that contains name, address, phone
number, birthdays, etc that is accessible from my iPhone as well as my
finaces iPhone. We both have iPhone 4s.
It would be even BETTER if we could set it up so that our family
could add names and addresses. (this is the setup my friend had, but, she
had a Mac as well as her mother in law)
In addition we are trying to create a new calendar for wedding events
that we can subscribe our phones to but still keep our individual
calendars. Does anyone have any recommendations? We tried the google
calendar, it just didnt work for us Are there other options??
Thank you,
Brandi

Nothing simpler! All you have to do is to log into iTunes using the same account with all the iPhones. Then put on contacts in iCloud! Each modification in an entry in contacts is automatically made on every device that is connected using the same account!

Thanks.

Since I have a Mac Mini hooked up to my big screen, I see no need for an Apple TV unless I want to use Airplay. My wireless network does everything I want it to do so I see no need for me to have Airplay.

Since the meteorologist is not using audio, only video, could she not also be using something like an Airport Express to mirror the image. Or whatever app is and hardware used with a projector for a presentation.

Downloading Audiobooks From Library
Posted by: "Bob Newman" bobnewman@cox.net agunat
Tue Apr 3, 2012 4:57 pm (PDT)
iPhone 4S, OS 5.1 & Overdrive 3.2.1.0
I am trying to transfer a book I have downloaded from my public library (Imperfect WMA). I realize I have to move it from the phone's "Books" folder to the created "Imperfect" play list. When I highlight it in the "Books" folder it is greyed out and a small icon appears to the left of each section smaller to a no smoking circle with a line drawn through it and I am unable to move it. I have tried re-transferring it several times from Overdrive with the same result. My library will not let me re-download the book as it says I already have it. In case the file might be corrupt I tried to re-download it from the library but Overdrive gives me the error message "All Parts Have Already Been Downloaded"
Help please.
Thanks in advance, Bob

I had the same problem with Overdrive. It turned out that it was
not handling wma files properly. They would download to the PC and then
transfer to the iPhone through iTunes but were then invisible on the
iPhone. I spoke with the help desk at the library and they said that this
was a known problem. I had to let the book expire and the download the mp3
version of the book. As far as I know this has not yet been fixed.

WMA format from Overdrive is copyright protected and will not play on a Mac or iDevice. Unfortunately for me, my library has very poor selection of MP3 audio books. The WMA selection is much better.
I have re-downloaded a book that was I had currently checked out. Re-check the message you got.
What I do to listen to WMA audio books is reboot into Boot Camp and Windows, and us my iPod nano just for Windows formatted items like WMA audiobooks. Everything else goes to either my iPhone or iPod Classic.

There must be some option to download audiobooks in mac format where
ever you downloaded from. This should open directly on mac.

Unfortunately I'm one of the 90% who don't own a Mac. That doesn't have anything to do with it though, it's confirmed by both Apple & Overdrive that the problem is due to OS5 and any Apple product will have it. It is not unheard of, it's happened to me before and I was told how to correct it. I should have saved that solution though, it worked.
