Re: New iPad, one computer

Everything is working now, the iPad and iPhone are both updated to iOS5, and syncing to iCloud.

From doing a lot of Google searches, it seems that the errors we were getting were due to the servers being overloaded and little to do with our computer settings. A lot of people have experienced the same problem, and the only resolution seems to be to just keep running the update from iTunes until it finally works. That's what we had to do with both units.

Thanks for the input!

Finally got the iPad updated to iOS5. Disabled Windows firewall, automatic updates and MS Security to get it to work. Strange though, now getting same error updating iPhone 4, even though the same measures have been taken.

I am starting to think there is more to the problem than the computer settings. After making a couple of runs at it, the process got past the point where the error had been occurring, looked like it was going to complete, then errored again with a server unavailable message.

The original error message will actually allow you to continue with the update, but it says the phone will be set to the default settings and you'll lose your current installed apps, settings, etc. Since the phone has previously been syncd to iTunes, is it possible to resync after the os is updated? The install goes through a backup process so that your apps will be reinstalled after the update. It seems like that's where it's getting hung up.

Thanks again,
Gary

From the LifeHacker link, it looks like we'll be able to sync with wifi once iOS 5 is installed. Thanks a lot for all the help.

Gary:

When it comes to Windows, it's all hypothetical to me as all of my machines are Macs (with the exception of one Linux net book). So I will have to defer to one of our Windows experts on the issue of your update error.

As to the wifi syncing question, take a look at the LifeHacker link below for a quick tutorial of setting it up:

The download seemed to complete but then got error: “an error occurred while backing up this ipad (-5000)â€ Did a bunch of Googling and a lot of people seemed to have that same problem and they fixed it by disabling MS Security Essentials. I did that but still get the same error. Any ideas?

I have an original itouch. I downloaded certain apps, which will not open. I deleted them and downloaded them again. Same thing.

They are Huffington reports and AP news apps.

What could be wrong?

Thanks

They most likely aren't compatible. The first generation iPod Touch (no such thing as an iTouch) is obsolete and many of the newer apps won't work on it.

In my experience, if the app is not compatible with the device, itunes will
tell you. If your downloading from the app store, a popup will notify you
that your device is not compatible. If from itunes on computer, during the
sync process itunes will tell you the following items could not be synced
and will provude the reason

Is your device jail broken?
