Does iOS5 in an iPhone 4 create the same keyboard mic button that is in a new 4S?

Ask Siri about HAL (2001 A Space Odyssey) I did at work and it said "I don't care to discuss Hal."

Probably for reminders, but otherwise "She" will say Can't connect to the network.

Siri uses Wolfram|Alpha. This also one of the best tributes to Steve that
I've seen.

When does an existing cell phone line
become no cost to delete? I have an ex bf on my
(full) account who wants out (iPhone 4) after 1 year and 4 months.
Will the cost be huge? Also, I'd like to change the number and sign up my
son, a high school freshman. His phone will not be a smartphone.
Thank you for any advice !!

On-device photo albums

Posted by: "Leif Gregory" lgitouch@gmail.com   ldgregory69

Sun Oct 16, 2011 3:18 am (PDT)

This has been on my iPhone wish list since the day I bought my iPhone 3G. I
was so excited to hear iOS 5 was going to finally let me do it. I've spent
the last couple hours playing with it and figured I'd save someone the time
and trouble and tell you what it really is.

For purposes of this explanation, I'm not interested in photo stream. I have
one device, my i4. Other members of my family have their own devices, each
with their own iCloud accounts. The reason I'm not interested in photo
stream is that I take *a lot* of photos. Pics of food packages so I can
remember what to get at the store, pics of whiteboard sessions, twenty pics
of something until I get a pic I like, and pics of things my daughters have
no need to see. My seven year old also takes copious numbers of pics of
furniture, cats, rocks and whatever catches her fancy. Stuff I'm not
interested in seeing.

The basic premise from Apple is that you'll never delete photos from your
camera roll. Or at least, you'll never delete pics you want in on-device
albums from your camera roll. The on-device albums are virtual and the pics
in them are links to the actual pic in your camera roll. Now that's not
entirely true because they can be links to photos in real albums on your iOS
device too, but if you took the time to put them into organized folders on
your computer to sync to your device, why would you then create an on-device
album for them.

I've got a little over 2,000 pictures neatly organized into folders on my
hard drive which are then synced to my iPhone as neatly organized albums.

I guess I could just create one folder and dump a ton of unorganized pics
into it and sync it to my iphone and then use the on-device albums to
organize them, but if I'm going to take the time to organize my pictures
into albums, why wouldn't I just do it right the first time? Besides, if I
decide to delete an album, I think it stands to reason I'm not interested in
keeping the pics that were in that album on my iPhone either. After deleting
my on-device album, I'd have to go dig around in the camera roll or real
album later to really get the pics off my iPhone.

I just don't understand why Apple would think I would want to scroll down
through 2,000 pics in my camera roll to get to the new pic I just took so
that I can then add that to an on-device album.

What I was hoping for was real albums that I could organize my newly taken
pics, from a nice empty camera roll, into either an existing album or a new
one and it would actually sync back to my iMac / iCloud with the pics in the
correct albums. And after syncing my camera roll to iPhoto that I could
delete the pics from the camera roll.

So, if like me, you were thinking this was how it might work. Now you know
and can save yourself a lot of time and energy not playing with it.

And yes, I understand this is how iPhoto works on the Mac. If I had a 1TB
iPhone, then I probably wouldn't have a problem keeping 30,000 some odd
photos sitting around like I do on my iMac.

So it was instructional and a rant all rolled into one! 😜

Joan,
Thanks for answering the poster's question with the Apple Support link.
Concise, direct and useful.
And it's not just one person's thoughts or opinions about the problem.
Sometimes all we have is anecdotal experience, but a solution from Apple is especially useful.
(Yeah, I know, sometimes they screw up, too).

Thanks!

John

Thanks. That worked. I created a new .me address for my i4, was using
my Apple ID originally. Upgraded the iMac to OSX Lion, used the Apple
ID on the iMac, then added another iCloud account on each device using
the Apple ID and set it only for Find My i*whatever* and now they all
show up using Find My iPhone app and everyone has their own data
iCloud accounts.

Thanks for the great idea!

Okay turns out that from what I can gather, Apple, in its
increasingly Microsoftish way, decided to can all WiFi tracking apps.
So there goes another incredibly useful tool destroyed by the Apple
Arbiters of Apps.

As for the missing podcasts, I eventually found them:

Seems that iOS5 moves VIDEO podcasts from the iTunes Music app to the
Video app. You'll find your video podcasts at the bottom of the
videos listed there.

Apple for some reason has stopped allowing apps
that scan for open wifi. Coming back from Android
this and a couple other Android apps I can't find
for the iPhone. :< On the other hand I can find
tons of Apple apps for things that Android will
probably never have. :>

I had WifiTrak and WiFiFoFum and they both quit with the update to iOS5.
Apple had these programs removed from the App Store long ago. I still have a
3G that I was hanging on to. I am going to load them on that phone so I can
use the scanner apps when I really need to.

Bluetooth car connection question

Posted by: "Devitt" devittad@comcast.net   devittad

Sun Oct 16, 2011 4:20 am (PDT)

I connected my iPhone 3GS to my new Legacy via Bluetooth. Now it goes to speakerphone automatically while I'm in the car. This is great when I'm driving. Not so good when my husband is at the wheel and I'm a passenger.

If I turn off Bluetooth on my phone while I'm a passenger, will I have to go through the set up again when I'm driving and want to use the connection? Or will turning Bluetooth back on in Settings reestablish the connection automatically?

I'm still running the latest iOS 4 software, if that makes a difference.

Many thanks,

Cathy

I use Ford Sync with my 3GS. When I dial out, the iPhone displays an option to not use Bluetooth. I also can opt to answer a call on the phone instead of over the stereo. I don't remember whether the stereo cuts out for a handset call, tho.

Cases for 4s vs 4

I have heard that the volume and mute buttons are a fractionally off set in the 4s vs the 4. Will this make cases for the 4 unusable on the 4s? Or maybe it will depend on the individual case.

I have an incase, griffin, & ottrerbox defender all for 4 that I have tried on my 4s & they have all fit EXCEPT where the sent switch is concerned. The switch is difficult to move due to its change in placement. But if you don't use this switch much then the 4 case should be fine. You can still move it but it doesn't slide easily.
