I feel you should use your apple id whatever it is to use with icloud. You'll get your apps, calender, contacts, everything. You sign up with me.com only if u want the email from apple.

Thanks Alice. I'm still not really sure what the purpose of it is but I guess an extra email account isn't a bad thing.

Sue's got the right idea. I always wait for the "upgraded" one to come out, after they've tweaked! I'm eligible for the upgrade (since June), so I think I'm gonna do it. I still have a 3G...

Siri is great. The camera use in the locked position and the quality of the camera makes me so glad I upgraded from the 3GS bypassing the 4. I think I am in the sweet spot as far as upgrades are concerned. Will bypass the 5 and pick up the 5s with all the tweaks.

Well that is sad...3G network drains a lot of battery...

I have mine off most of the time, but still connected thru EDGE and receive all push, notifications and email..on my iphone 4

Would you know if it is related only to iphone 4S or all iphones running iOS 5 ?

A co-worker leaves his 3G off for most of the time, and I leave mine on all
the time. Without precisely measuring, it seems that we end up with similar
battery life.

It's probably related to the new broadband chip fitted to the 4s that allows it to be used on both AT&T and Verizon/TMobile.

It is the 4S the new "World" chip doesn't have the ability to turn 3G off
and unless you are in a very rural area that doesn't have 3G the battery
drain that happened in the iPhone 1, 3G and even 3GS to some extent
shouldn't happen anymore. If/When the T-Mobile merger goes there shouldn't
be an inch of the country without 3G and most with HSDPA/HSDPA+

Any suggestions on how to fix this apparent hang-up? I can understand 3-4 hours tops to backup before installing ios%, but this is ridiculous.

Hello, I updated to iTunes 10, and then upgrade my Iphone 3gs to the
software 5.0 version.
Then my problems started, it will not put all my data, photos, music back on
the phone.
How I wish I had not tried the upgrade.
Somehow I need to go back to the older version of iTunes and reset my phone
back the previous software.
Any tips please?

Hi Barry,

Unfortunatelly our dear Apple does not want or allow you to downgrade your firmware. They know what is best for you.

iOS update on my 4 took about 2 hours.

That said - I was switching to a 4 from a 3GS. My daughter got the 4S, I got her 4. With Siri - texting is a whole lot safer for her while driving. Anyway --- the upgrade was relatively smooth for me - backed up the 3GS, restored to the 4. Here are some comments qualifying the "relatively" part:

--- For once - the folders weren't trashed. They all came back, and got populated with my apps. Pleasant surprise after my last OS upgrade.

--- Beware the screen saver on a PC. It not only terminated the restore, but it also closed iTunes. BAD. The only solution, turn off the screen saver.

--- With about a dozen apps to go, it got stalled. And stayed stalled. The only solution - uninstall all of the partially installed apps one at a time, then re-install them from iTunes. Thankfully I never pay for apps so all were free. Not sure how it would have played out if I had paid for them - would I be stuck with buying them again?

My daughter's upgrade, though, was dramatically different. Just going from a 4 to the 4GS. Backup and restore succeeded - but it trashed most of her text messages. I worked for hours trying to figure out how to restore them. I waded through the quagmire of text message backup programs, bit on one that cost $10, only to find to my disgust all it did was put them into a text file on my computer. STUPID me - having paid for a piece of JUNKware, I was not about to pay for another one. So my daughter lost most of her text message archive. She is not happy, and I don't blame her.

ATT store have some people that are morons. They upgraded their network some time in the past few months. So when my daughter brought in her 4 to upgrade to 4S, the first thing they did was de-activate the old sim. And - since their activation server was backed up, the new sim wouldn't activate. It took us two visits to the Apple Store that night and the next night to get her phone working. What parent wants their daughter without a phone for a day - just because somebody decided to zap a sim? If they knew the server was going to be backed up - they should have just swapped the _____ sim cards and left their customer with a functional phone!

And no - I don't want to hear from Verizon religion adherents. I've been there, done that, and I'll never go back to Verizon.

still fighting with restore

Team.

I am still trying to restore since the O5 udpate.

I have a backup on October 12.

I have tried to restore to it a number of times and get:

"Itunes could not restore iphone because backup was corrupt or not
compatible with iphone that is being restored."

I AM able to restore a backup from December 2010 though..

Any ideas.?

Thanks

Bill

iCloud Acct with gmail & me.com

I was thinking changing my iTunes email from gmail to me.com email account
would simply things before I did everything on iCloud.

But, as you say, I can't change my iTunes account to my me.com email. Why is
this?

I guess the best thing for me to do is add my me.com account onto iCloud
(for contacts, calendar, etc) along with using my original gmail account
I've been using for my iTunes account?

This is a little confusing sorting all this out...

Thanks everyone!

But you can't change it to your MobileMe account if you have one already!

If you log into apple.com and find making adjustments to your apple account, you can add or drop email accounts.

Ok so as not to try to confuse everyone ...
My apple Id is my gmail address for just my iTunes stuff and my @me address is what I am using to sync I cal and contacts.
If I change my apple id to my @me id I assume all my music and apps will switch over without difficulty ?

I'm not worrying about 90 day thing since I've never done it.

It is true; iTunes will no longer automatically back up when you hook up the
USB cable. However, in iTunes, you can right-click your iDevice and select
Backup. This will direct iTunes to backup your device each time you
manually select backup.

Since I don't [plan to move from MobileMe to iCloud for some weeks, it doesn't seem silly to me.

And "have it there"?
Where?
In System Preferences?
While in System Preferences, go to the menus, View, Customize, and UNcheck MobileMe.
Then you won't see it, and you won't have to feel silly.

Roger, Apple removed the WifiTrak app from the app store about 2 years ago.
I had it and it continued to work until iOS5.

I just updated my 3GS on my XP Pro PC.Now I find out the only reason I went through the process, to use iCloud, can only be used if you are running Vista. Is there a work around for this. At least with mobile me no software was required. Is there a work around?
Thanks

The same thing happend to me! I installed icloud on my sons laptop and now the system crawls. I uninstalled i cloud, but that didn't help - the problem remained. We can't even get into the itunes store in itunes, nothing but a blank screen. Any ideas?

All the other pc's we have work fine.

Subject: [apple-iphone] iCloud Problems!

I installed iOS5 and iCloud on my MacBookPro and iPad and now I have nothing but problems. My computer has slowed down to a crawl. As I type I get the spinning pinwheel. Anything I try to do gives me the pinwheel. My iPad took 6 hours to update. My MobileMe account is screwed up. My MobileMe password on my iPad is OK, and on my MacBook but it tells me that it's wrong on my iPhone.

I am very unhappy!
