Fresh re-install of OS and mail settings

Posted by: "pco98" pco98@excite.com   pco98

Mon Oct 17, 2011 4:35 am (PDT)

Hi all

Have done a fresh install of lion as I was having some kernel panic issues which now seem to be resolved. Have one question about mail.

Have setup my mail account again and synced my old address book so when I write a message to someone who is in the address book, there name and email automatically comes up in the To: box once I start typing. However I also get emails from students who are not included in my address book. After the first time I write to them, or they write and I reply, then mail remembers them for future use. So when I type their name the next time it automatically fills out the the rest of the detail.

It is these non-address book people data files I would like to copy over again. Any tips on which files to look for?

Many thanks

Ross

Siri's Attitude

There is apparently a large and growing base of amusing responses to creative questions put to Siri. While on a quite different scale, these surprises from computer software have been around for a long time. Once, on my Apple II, I was playing 'Apple Adventure' (how many remember that?) and getting very frustrated. Finally, I typed in "F*** you!" only to enter a fit of laughter upon getting the response: "Your place, or mine?"

A friend of mine was asked to upgrade the software on his iPhone via
an email message to it. He did so and promptly lost every single item
he had stored in memory? Was the message he got a spam, or is it
dangerous to upgrade the software?

Howdy.

Not enough information for anyone to make even an educated
guess/answer.

What model iPhone?

What iOS was the iPhone running?

What software? The OS? as in iOS? Upgrade to what version of iOS?

Macintosh or Windows user?

Who sent the upgrade message?

Would you take a random suggestion to upgrade the operating system on your Macintosh without checking, and without carefully backing up your computer first?

If said friend was a good little boy or girl and periodically synced
to iTunes then all is not lost. Just wipe the iPhone and do a restore
from iTunes. Since plugging the phone (or iPod Touch) into the
computer is by far the easiest way to charge it, we can hope that it
is properly backed up.

If you use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to do this via scheduled tasks,
it's much easier and more reliable than manual backups to DVD.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple announces sales
of four million iPhone 4S units, more than double the iPhone 4 launch
via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/17/11

Apple announced sales of four million iPhone 4S units in the three days
after its launch on October 14. In addition, the company said, more
than 25 million customers have already upgraded to the new iOS 5
software in the first five days of its release and more than 20 million
customers have signed up for iCloud: Apple's marketing honcho Phil
Schiller was quoted in a statement:

iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in
its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the
iPhone 4 launch during its first three days. iPhone 4S is a hit with
customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the
best iPhone ever.

In 2010, Apple announced 1.7 million sales of iPhone 4 during the
launch weekend. The company reported 600,000 pre-orders for iPhone 4 in
the first 24 hours, which included orders placed with overseas carriers.

Following the iPhone 4S release last week, carrier AT&T announced
pre-orders of 200,000 units in the first twelve hours, calling it "the
most successful iPhone launch we've ever had". Apple then confirmed one
million iPhone 4S pre-orders in 24 hours, surpassing the previous
single day pre-order record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4. Sprint
announced its best sales day ever…at noon Central Time.

It should be noted that the iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to launch
simultaneously on three carriers in the United States, available for
the first time on the Sprint network – which together with Verizon,
certainly helped sales numbers. Apple also added Australia and Canada
to the five launch countries it had for the iPhone 4: US, Japan, UK,
Germany and France.

Pre-order went fast and the handset actually pretty quickly sold out
across all carriers following the launch.

Full release below the break:

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple is selling almost
1,000 iPhone 4Ss/minute, setting it up to be the fastest selling gadget
ever via 9to5Mac by Jake Smith on 10/17/11

Shawn Blanc (via The Next Web) calculated this morning that Apple is
selling 16 iPhone 4Ss a second, or roughly 1,000 a minute. Blanc's
figuring comes after Apple announced this morning that there were 4
million iPhone 4Ss sold its opening three day weekend. Figures are also
expected to expand as the iPhone 4S is introduced in 22 more countries
on the 24th.

Reaching this milestone, Apple is on tract to pass Microsoft's Kinect
as the fastest selling consumer device of all time. Microsoft sold 8
million Kinects in the first 60 days, a number Apple could
theoretically pass in the first two weeks.

The success of the iPhone 4S is most likely helped by a few factors:

- The availability on three U.S. carriers: AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.
AT&T and Sprint both announced opening day sales records on Friday. The
iPhone 4 was only on AT&T in the US.
- iPhone 4 was released in 5 Countries. iPhone 4S was also available in
Canada and Australia in addition.
- iPhone 4 saw serious product shortages while it appears that Apple
made plenty of iPhone 4S's
- There was a longer than normal wait time between the iPhone 4 and 4S
- iPhone 4S is amazing.
We're sure to hear more in Apple's FYQ4 earnings call tomorrow
afternoon.

Protecting data on iPod, iPhone

Is there any way of password protecting data on an iPod or iPhone in case it should be lost or stolen? If not by password, what other methods might serve as a defence?

You can have the iPhone or iPad set to require a password to unlock it. You can then set the iDevice to auto-lock after a set interval, and/or lock it manually whenever necessary.
The Find My iPhone/iPad program will allow you to track a stolen iDevice, and also has a "remote wipe" feature that allows you to remotely erase the data on a lost or stolen unit.

Hi! Is there a way of renaming photos once they are in iPhoto? Or do
I have to remove them from iPhoto, name them, and put them back?

Thanks for your help!
Donna
