Howdy.

Dave, have you done any of the basic and routine maintenance steps?

1. Repair Disk Permissions

2. Safe Disk Boot

3. Delete cache files with a utility like OnyX?

Are you copying files to a folder on an external HD on your Mac? If
so, is the "Ignore ownership on this volume" check box checked or not
checked for that external HD when you do a Get Info command on that HD
icon?

Moving to Imac

Dear All,
This has been a great fun seeing all the discussions. I have a MacMini 2GHz Intelcore 2 Duo and a MBP 2.3 GHz intelcore 2 Duo. Both are updated in 10.6 to the latest and backed up on a 500GB Time Machine. MBP is also backed up on a separate drive using CCC.

Now to move to Lion, i am planning to buy a 27 inch Imac with 1 TB memory. I plan to us this as a workhorse and use MBP for a backup or travel buddy.

My questions are (rather first of many)
On my new Imac can I restore ( and should I ) using time machine or a CCC or should I use Migration assistant or do simple one to one copy method. Mind you my Time Machine and CCC back up is using 10.6.

I have more questions but I will ask them one by one for a better understanding of issues.

Thanks in advance to every body esp the maestro mac Atorney

Restoring from a TM backup of 10.6 risks overwriting 10.7 with 10.6 at *best*, and giving you a corrupt mixed system at worst.

I would create a temporary new user on the new Lion iMac, then use Migration Assistant to bring in your user files from the most current backup.

Incidentally, one of the first things to do after that is run Repair Permissions from Disk Utility.

No way an iMac, or any machine can have that much memory. I think
about 8 GB is about the most you will see. Sure you don't mean a 1 TB
hard drive?

When you first start up a new machine it will offer to move your
stuff over by Migration Assistant. That is probably both the easiest
way to do it and the most foolproof.

iTunes 10.5 and pause between songs

Posted by: "Ron West" ronwest@gmail.com   ronwestb12

I've upgraded to 10.5 and now there is a pause between every song. It
makes listening to albums like "Dark Side Of The Moon" rather
difficult. I thought iTunes got rid of that problem 3 or 4 updates
ago.
Crossfade is off so that's not the problem. Any idea on how to get rid
of this pause between songs?

There is a setting in either iTunes or on iPhone > Settings > Music to skip
the between track pause.

Re: Strange Account Behavior--thinking of moving to a new clean acco

Just a follow up to my own post, I started moving to a new account this
morning. So far, it's night and day! I don't know what was going on with
my old, old account, but what a tremendous difference between the two.

Load times are astonishingly faster. I can get Civ V up on Steam in
probably 20% of the time it took under the old account. There have been
no client updates in between, so this amazed me the most.

I am being careful not to transfer any settings or data that might have
caused problems under the old account. I am re-entering reg info where
needed. All documents, media, etc..were kept on an external hard drive so
those data remain unchanged.

Things that were quirky before, such as loosing icons or files randomly
have not occurred.

Makes me wonder, what went wrong and probably snowballed. Oh well, as
long as it's going to be a thing of the past.

Yes Jim,

User account within OS X for that machine.

First place I go to troubleshoot anything after failing with standard maintenance is to try to replicate the problem on a 'clean' account on the same system, usually using the same software, (not a user specific app).

In my case, many problems could not be replicated on the 'clean' account. I was amazed at the difference I was seeing just a little while into transitioning to another full time user account, even using the same installed base of software!

As I mentioned, that particular account had been migrated over each time I got a new machine, so it was about 5 years old and had been on 3 machines via migration. App updates and upgrades, and OS updates and upgrades had gone on. Generally, I had no trouble….or so I thought. Things started degrading maybe about 8 months ago. It took me until now to really try to move things to a new user account and finally eradicate the old account.

I moved to MacOS X with the Public Beta in September, 2000. Mostly, I've upgraded in place, as you have. When I decided to make the move to Snow Leopard, I decided to "make a clean break" and minimize the amount of accumulated digital cruft in my system.

So for me 10.6 was a clean install, followed by a carefully curated Migration of old data.

And then with Lion, I also carefully reviewed what I had, since I had no further need for Rosetta-requiring old programs, and also sloughed some other tuff I hadn't looked at in years.

Sounds like you're doing that now....

I never used the public beta of OS X. Prior to moving over to an totally Apple machine, after the 'clone' years, I had 3 machines, a Umax clone, with a processor upgrade, (gosh, for the life of me can't remember the specs). A Pegasos II (post-Amiga Amiga), that I was generally running System 8.5 on, if I remember correctly. and a Windows compatible, (yucca). I decided to make a break from all of the nonsense when Apple released the Powermac G5. I ordered their top of the line model, all top flight software from Adobe, Pagemaker, I think it was still around, some voice recognition software, and tons more. Spent like 6k at the time to move to the 'new order', which was OS X. Loved it! Stayed with that until 2007 when I moved to the iMac. I have had so many adjustments and updates that I just started losing track of most of it. I was a systems person, but at the time, did not really have the time to put into systems due to other work I was doing.

Well, it's just now catching up with me, I guess. All of the 100% PPC stuff went years ago, but I'm still caught up in a mess, I guess. I believe i DID do a migration from the G5 to the Intel iMac at the time, and have just been going with the flow since. Good old Migration Assistant has made it too easy.

Time to get back to organization I guess! :)

OK, I took the lazy way out and just created a new user account on
Lion. Things got a LOT quicker! (Thanks, Harry for this idea that
solved your problem).

So, what do I need to do to my old account to get it to work as well
as this one? Note that I did not do anything so far that Randy or
Todd suggested. However, I thought that Apple automatically ran all
the maintenance scripts that Randy suggested.

There really is no easy way that I have found, so far. iCloud makes it pretty easy to get your contacts, calendar and other data moved over. 3rd party applications may or may not need to be registered again. Not bought, you may have to enter the registration info again. I have moved my documents, pix and other media over to an external. I didn't keep much of that on the internal anyway. I've then double checked all of these files, one at a time, before moving them back to the new account.

It's been about a day and a half now, and I'm still tinkering. It's can be a big job, but take your time and it should be OK. I am NOT going to delete the old account until I'm sure everything is kosher here. Even then, I will take the option of archiving the old home directory for that account.

It's take it as it comes, and take it easy!

Oh yes, and a little advice that I can give in troubleshooting that I've used for many years. If software is screwing up in one user account, and you've done routine maintenance and troubleshooting, go to your secondary account, (oh yes, make sure you have one of those from day one), and test it there. That will tell you if it's the account, software install, hardware, or what.

Question For Jim S.

Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net   hflaxman001

Sun Oct 16, 2011 1:02 am (PDT)

Posted here as it might be beneficial to some of the new group members out there.

Anyway, Jim, I recall you responding to a post with a system of organization that you use to store your applications. You mentioned that you put as many 3rd party applications in the '~/Users/Shared/applications' folder as possible? Is that correct? If they run from there, that's a good organizational strategy?

I'm doing away with my subdirectory mess while I still can and my new account is 'fresh and clean'.

Do you categorize them in sub-folders below that based upon function or group function, i.e. 'office productivity'?

Appreciate any feedback, Jim.

iCloud problems

Posted by: "davidpriceuk" dprice@fireflyuk.net   davidpriceuk

Sun Oct 16, 2011 2:26 am (PDT)

I started using iCloud yesterday and I'm regretting it. I looked at iCal on my MacBook this morning and for some reason many of the entries have changed colour. All my work-related entries are yellow when they were green, and recurring home events have changed to orange, while the individual non-recurring events have remained blue. Orange is also the colour for anything to do with my children, so that's going to be confusing.

I sent into System Preferences/iCloud and tried to stop syncing to iCloud, and it warned me that if I did, it would delete all data in iCal on my computer, which indeed it did. I should be able to restore from backup, so that's not a problem, or I could sync with my phone which still has the correct iCal entries, but I think I want to stop using iCloud altogether.

What's worrying me now is that if I uncheck the box in the iCloud settings in System Preferences that syncs documents and data on my computer with iCloud, it will then delete all documents and data on my computer.

How do I escape from the iCloud? I want to go back to straightforward syncing with my iPhone.
