I read an article that said there were 1 million pre-orders, so people, be patient. The servers are overloaded just like the iOS 5 download servers were. It happens every time a new iPhone comes out. Nothing to get mad about. At least you have your new iPhone. You can still play with it. It'll be just like an iPod Touch until you get it activated.

No you can't - that's the problem, until it is activated you can't do
ANYTHING.

And also, 5 years in a row - ADD SOME SERVERS AT&T

Been there, done that.

Which is why I'm waiting for a month or two before I upgrade our 3GS to the 4S.

Tori: the type of sync is up to you. Normally when I get a new iPhone, I set it up as new and manually put the apps on I want. I find I put on less apps than previously had in the most recent backup.

Hi Alice - you are right - still disappointed though. I am now updating
my ipad 2 while I await activation of the iphone. Ran into error messages
but turned off security and all is proceeding well so far.

Disappointing, yes but nothing you can do about it. I bet the Apple Store is having the same problem.

I was disappointed it took all morning to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 release. At first I thought my trouble was that I was trying to update from a beta. Frustration had me not thinking about hammered servers. Silly me LOL it took reading a tweet about hammered servers for me to realize I was frustrated about something I had no control over.

Come on, people! With all the new phones going out today how could there NOT be big server tie-ups? It's one of the reasons I'm never an early adopter. That and the fact that I'm not a tech expert. Got to wait until the fast adopters work the kinks out. :-)

Hats off to you guys.

Siri: Not Why You'll Buy the iPhone 4S, But Why You'll

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Siri: Not Why You'll
Buy the iPhone 4S, But Why You'll Fall in Love With It via Mashable! by
Ben Parr on 10/14/11

When Apple announced the iPhone 4S, the company touted the phone's
faster processor and improved camera. It took a deep dive into
Messages, Newsstand, notifications and the many new features of iOS 5.

But what Apple concentrated on most was Siri, the iPhone's virtual
assistant. Built on the foundation of artificial intelligence
technology developed from the CALO project, Siri takes natural language
and turns it into action. Weather reports, calendar appointments, text
messages, among other things, are all accessible just by talking to
Siri.

Without a doubt, Siri is the most prominent new feature of the iPhone
4S. Yet, when I visited the line outside Apple's flagship San Francisco
store, not a single person mentioned it as the reason they were buying
the new iPhone.

SEE ALSO: Siri: From App to Apple & Beyond

I asked at least two dozen people in line, "What is the number one
reason you're in line to buy the new iPhone?" Answers almost
universally fell into four categories:

- I have an iPhone 3G/3GS, and it's time to upgrade.
- I have (insert dumbphone model here), and it's time to upgrade.
- I lost my iPhone 4, and I need a new iPhone.
- I want the better camera.
Nobody mentioned Siri as their primary reason for getting the phone.
That's something we should all have expected. Siri is one of those
features you have to use to fully understand and appreciate. You only
grasp just what it can do for your life once you start playing with it
— and this my experience when I tried it out.

Nobody is buying the iPhone 4S for Siri. But once they start using the
phone and experience its artificial intelligence capabilities for
themselves, they will be hooked. Siri will be the reason a lot of
people will love — and not just like — the new iPhone. In two years,
when they're ready to buy a new phone, they're going to get an iPhone
because Siri has changed how they fundamentally perceive their phones.
Bonus: Siri Has a Personality
1. What is the meaning of life?

Siri: "Try and be nice to people. Avoid eating fat. Read a good book
every now and then."

Virginia: Yes, it's possible to update your 3Gs to the 4s. Check with AT&T to see if your upgrade eligible first. If you are, see if Apple has a 4s in stock, if you have one near you. Otherwise, call your local AT&T, VZ, Sprint store and ask. I suggest Apple first because they are always nice, know the iPhone and are willing to help. I've never had any luck at AT&T stores with people actually knowing something about iPhones. They barely know the plans for them.

Apple's new iPhone 4S comes with a glass back panel like iPhone 4. The
glass panels are made of aluminosilicate glass, which is the same type
of material used in the windshields of helicopters and high speed
trains. Though these panels are said to be 20 times stiffer and 30
times harder than plastic, which [...]

iPhone 4S: Web browsing, high-definition video capture

From the outside, they look virtually identical to an untrained eye.
Inside, they are worlds apart, figuratively speaking. But seriously,
how fast is the new iPhone 4S compared to the sixteen months old iPhone
4? Well, YouTubers are doing tests of their own so we went about
searching for the best side-by-side clips pitting the iPhone 4S to its
older brother. For starters, the iPhone 4S's browsing experience is a
whole lot better thanks to a speedier chip, two times faster cellular
networking (3G HSPA 14.4Mbps) and heavy under-the-hood tweaking in
Safari and its Javascript engine.

Here's a 3G test on AT&T's network.

And here's a WiFi test so you get a feel of the iPhone 4S's processing
and rendering performance.

It's not just the browser, the iPhone 4S's back camera benefits from
the increased oomph provided by the A5 chip. Specifically, the A5′s
image signal processor unit is responsible for nice real-time image
processing, including face detection, white balance and automatic image
stabilization. The difference between shaky iPhone 4 clips and smooth,
stabilized iPhone 4S footage really makes all the difference, as we
showed you. As for the quality of 1080p video capture, MacRumors
compiled a nice list of the various high-definition clips taken on the
iPhone 4S and compared to other popular cameras, embedded after the
break.

Look, this isn't about speeds and feeds, but Apple's knack for creating
tightly integrated experiences really starts to shine with the latest
iPhone. That's not to say the iPhone 4S disappoints in the hardware
department – quite the contrary. But it's tight interplay between the
hardware and software – both from a single company and designed under
the same roof – that enables Apple's phone to leave higher-specc'd
devices in the dust. It really is twice as fast, in certain
applications even more, such as graphics-intensive games.

Performance increases stem from the Apple-designed dual-core A5
processor with 512MB RAM and seven times faster graphics. Even
underclocked to 800MHz (to save power), the iPhone 4S powers past the
1.5GHz Samsung Galaxy S II in web browsing tests. Heck, even Samsung's
own quad-core Exynos 4210 processor doesn't hold a candle to the iPhone
4S. The A5 chip purring inside the iPhone 4S combines Imagination
Technologies' PowerVT SGX543 graphics unit and a Cortex-A9 processing
core licensed from Arm Holdings, a U.K.-based fables silicon maker.

Re: Ringtones

Yesterday and the day before, I upgraded our 21.5" iMac to Sys 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5. I then upgraded our iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPad 2 to iOS 5. Then I synced both phones and the pad using the provided cable between the Mac and the mobile devices. 4 out of 10 custom ringtones were missing on the iPhone 3GS, 3 out of 10 were missing on the iPhone 4, and 0 out of 10 were missing on the iPad 2.

I synced then each twice more with the same results. I then went under the iTunes menu to "Provide iTunes Feedback" and let Apple know about the problem. I strongly feel that ALL who have had similar problems should let them know so it can get fixed ASAP. These ringtones have been functioning perfectly all the way back to the iPhone 3G with many iterations of both iTunes and iOS. In other words everything worked fine together until now.

In order to regain control of the situation I then played around with the ringtones by doing two types of things. First, I removed all non-algebraic characters from their names. Things like dashes, spaces, etc. This helped all the way except for one ringtone that would not transfer from iTunes over to the iPhone 3GS. For this case I duplicated the file and added one additional letter to its name. That file did get transferred.

I think you all realize that it's not so much having to do that, as much as it is the mind numbing tedium of also having to update over 100 contact's custom ringtones.
