Howdy.

More that you ever wanted to know?

A router - just the specific router part itself - is a device to
connect to the Internet and to supply IP addresses from a pool of IP
addresses in the router. The router acts a bit like an instant
language translator but for IP addresses.

- Ethernet Switch. You can buy an Ethernet Switch. It's a simple
device to create an internal network.

Hub or Switch? Before the Ethernet "Switch" there was the Ethernet
Hub. Both the Hub and the Switch do the same function of making a
wired network possible but the Switch can move data between different
devices at the fastest speed the two devices can achieve with the
Ethernet speed technology built into each device. So if you have 2
computers with Gigabit Ethernet ports and 1 laser printer with 100BaseT
Fast Ethernet, with a Switch the 2 computers will move data between
them at the fastest possible speed while they will communicate with the
laser printer at the slower speed.

An Ethernet Hub will force ALL connected devices to communicate at the
speed of the slowest connected device. This is why a Switch is
better. So with 2 Gigabit Ethernet computers and 1 Fast Ethernet
printer the two computers will be forced to move data between them at
Fast Ethernet speed instead of Gigabit Ethernet speed.

- Firewall. You can buy a separate device called a Firewall and
connect it to your mix of network and Internet devices.

- WiFi. You can buy a WiFi base station such as an Apple AirPort WiFi
base station or other brand.

Many routers incorporate these separate devices such as a firewall, an
Ethernet switch, WiFi, and a router in one physical box.

Most routers with WiFi and Ethernet and firewall included in the one
box and just fine for small networks but you have to check the
specifications to be sure you get things like the Ethernet speed and
the WiFi speed that you want.

First check the router's specs to see if the WiFi section can do the
current 3 speed levels. The fastest is 802.11n.

Then check the router's specs to see if the Ethernet section can do the
current fastest speed of 1000BaseT (aka Gigabit Ethernet).

If the router can't do Gigabit Ethernet speed but only 100BaseT speed
(aka Fast Ethernet), then your internal network speed will only move
data at this slower speed.

Getting a separate Ethernet switch that does 1000BaseT Gigabit Ethernet
speed often a faster alternative to the routers supplied by ISPs. Plus
it's a more flexible way to add Ethernet ports in a household where new
computers or printers may be added.

You can add an Ethernet Switch and use the ports on it but you can also
continue using the Ethernet ports on the router. It will all work
together. The question then still remains which ports move data at the
fastest speed.

You can add a separate WiFi base station to this mix and turn off the
WiFi in the router and turn on and use the WiFi in the separate WiFi
base station.

In either case, be sure to configure, at the minimum, the WiFi so it
has a name you recognize and it is encrypted with a password. Wired
Ethernet networks doesn't need the encryption but WiFi networks do.

I've ben using the same ENET hub for about 10 years without problems. What is the advantage of a switch. They used to be a lot more expensive.

Yeh, I should have completed the thread. Any suggestions on brands? I need 8 out and one with a coax connector for an old printer.

Can switches be daisy chained?

Same thing here with my iPod Touch; however, everything went smoothly on the first try with my iPad so I suppose it's a matter of timing & how busy the Apple servers are at the time a connection is attempted.

iOS5 successfully installed this morning on my iPhone, doing my iPad now.
Got the error below a couple of times last night so abandoned it until
today.

These things are always better for us Europeans when you Americans are in

Still haven't managed to get iCloud backup and iMessenger set up yet (logins
rejected etc.)

Re: OT: Camera Roll

Howdy.

John, I think you've met one of the little but very irritating bugs on
the iPhone 4.

The same thing happens to me on my iPhone 4. About every other day,
the Camera Roll album can't be accessed because it's hidden under the
Albums title. Very irritating.

The only way to fix the problem that I've found is to press the
sleep/wake button and shut down the iPhone. Then restart it.

This fixes the problem until it happens the next time.

I upgraded to iPhone iOS 5 late last night and have only used the
Photos feature a couple of times since.

Perhaps iOS 5 fixed this problem.

I know that it's a refurb, but it's a triple-interface 2TB external hard drive for $100! I might take a chance! Thought I'd pass it along:

Minor quibble - when you use the acronym "HD", you lead people to believe that you are referring to "High Definition".
The correct acronym foe a hard drive is "HDD".

What You Need to Know About Photo Stream

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

Thu Oct 13, 2011 8:31 am (PDT)

http://feeds.wired.com/~r/GearFactor/~3/WduwggqUDiY/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: What You Need to Know
About Photo Stream via Wired: Gadget Lab by Charlie Sorrel on 10/13/11

If you have a new enough iPhone or iPad, you can now edit photos on the
device. Photo Charlie Sorrel

iOS 5 is here, and with it iCloud. ICloud is the biggest step yet
towards cutting the cord with desktop computers, and it arguably does
away with the old-fashioned idea of files and folders. One of the best
parts of iCloud is Photo Stream which, in combination with the new
Photos app, lets you forget about the computer completely. Almost.

Camera

First, and most noticeable, are the new Camera and Photos apps. Any iOS
5 device can now snap a photo using the volume-up hardware switch
(which is right next to the lens in the iPad 2 and almost laughably
hard to use without photographing your finger). iPhone users can also
double-tap the home button on the lock-screen to reveal a shortcut
button that launches straight to camera for quick shooting.

You can also call up a grid overlay, lock the exposure and autofocus
before recomposing (iPhone 4 and 4S-only), and pinch to zoom as you are
shooting. When you have snapped a picture, you can swipe right to enter
your camera roll. This won't work if you accessed the camera through
the lock-screen shortcut.

Once you are viewing you photos, you can now edit them. This is done
the same way as if you were in the Photos app itself. Open an image,
tap edit and you can rotate and crop (with or without constraints),
correct for redeye and enhance the image. This last just adds a little
pep, tweaking the white balance and contrast.

The edits seem to be non-destructive: You save your image, but if you
choose to edit it again later you can still revert to the original.

From here you can also share images (email, Twitter, Messages), assign
to a contact, print, copy or choose to use as wallpaper.

Photos

Head over to the Photos app and you can use all of the same editing
tricks, only you now have access to all the photos on your iDevice, not
just your photo roll. Curiously, when editing photos here, you are
prompted to save a copy. Thus, you cannot revert, but you still have
the untouched original. Editing won't work on the iPad 1.

You can also rearrange the photos into albums, although it isn't
obvious at first how you might do this.

First, you need to tap the arrow-in-a-box icon, the one usually used
for sharing things. Then you select the images you want to use and tap
the "Add To…" button. Then choose to make a new album or add to an
existing one. Note — if you cancel here, then all your photos are
deselected. This is a pain if you start off adding to an existing album
and then decide you want a new one instead. You'll have to start over.

You can also choose to add images to an album from within it, using the
same arrow-in-a-box icon. Oddly, you can re-add the same photos and
they'll show up as duplicates. I assume that this is a bug.

Photo Stream

Finally, there's Photo Stream. Any photos you snap with the camera, or
save from various applications (including screenshots), or import using
the camera connection kit. are added to your Photo Stream. And any
photos in your Photo Stream are uploaded automatically to iCloud (over
Wi-Fi) and then beamed down to any other Photo Stream-enabled devices.

Full resolution files are sent back to your computer for safekeeping,
and kept in the cloud for 30 days. Smaller JPGs are sent to the
iDevices, which helps speed up downloads. If you regularly use your
iPad to import RAW photos from your camera, though, Photo Stream will
send the whole files up to iCloud. I spend half a day with unresponsive
Internet before I realized what was happening.

Any edits you make on the iOS devices will be mirrored immediately on
other devices.

The master library is stored on your Mac or PC. On a Mac you can use
Aperture or iPhoto, and this is the only place a computer comes in. The
workaround is to save files out of the Photo Stream and to you camera
roll to keep permanently. You might be glad you bought the 64GB model
after all. One thing to note: Once something is in your stream, it is
impossible to remove. This, too, sounds like a bug.

Video

Finally, on a related topic, iMovie on the iPad and iPhone has been
updated. It will now work with movie files imported from your camera,
which means no more tedious workarounds. It now recognizes Motion JPG
video from my Panasonic GF1, although it won't see AVCHD Lite files. It
seems like anything that can be imported via the camera connection kit
should work. Give it a try.

Photo Stream really shows what Apple's strategy is for iOS. Sure, we
don't need a computer now, but neither do we need to worry about our
files at all. Our photos and videos are automatically backed up and
available wherever we want them. No more thumb drives, no more e-mail
attachments. It just works.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: The Mac hasn't been
this strong in decades: The 'hallo effect' is real via 9to5Mac by
Christian Zibreg on 10/13/11

Apple's new boss Tim Cook is well regarded for his obsession with
micro-managing Apple's end-to-end manufacturing and supply ecosystem
and he's been credited for running trains on time, especially since
2005. Apple's ability to deliver products on time while tapping the
economies of scale to gradually bring the prices down is nowhere as
evident as with the Mac. At this month's iPhone 4S presentation, Cook
updated us on the state of the Mac. The slides he put up brought a
smile on our faces. There are now nearly 60 million Mac users
worldwide. Let's keep it going and zoom past the 100 million milestone
ASAP.

Now, it's no secret the Mac's been picking up a lot of steam since the
Intel transition. In fact, Cook said, the Mac platform has grown by 23
percent since 2010, having eclipsed by almost six times the four
percent overall growth in Windows PCs. But it's not just in year. Every
single quarter in the past five years the Mac's outgrown the PC market.
As a result, the MacBook Pro and iMac are now best-selling notebook and
desktop PCs, accounting for nearly one in four systems sold in U.S.
retail.

"For those of you who have been following Apple for a while, you know
that it wasn't too long ago that this number was in the midst-single
digits", Cook said at the event. Well, he wasn't lying. IDC and Gartner
yesterday published their preliminary computer shipment estimates,
confirm the Mac's resurgence. Key findings and tables after the break…

The MacBook Air led the "robust growth" in Gartner's survey and the
millions of iPads took toll on overall PC sales – but not Apple.
Actually, the Mac maker "experienced the strongest growth among the top
five vendors in the U.S. PC market", growing third-quarter shipments by
21.5 percent.

Gartner pegged Apple's share of the overall U.S. computer market at
12.9 percent, while IDC came out with an 11.3 percent estimate. This
puts Apple right behind market-leading Hewlett-Packard and Dell (#2)
and well ahead of Toshiba, Acer Group and the Others.

Note: These estimates exclude iPad sales.

With iPad shipments thrown in, Apple beats Hewlett-Packard for the top
spot in computers (and mobile, too). Both Gartner and IDC put Apple's
lead over PC at 20-to-1 last quarter and 80-to-1 in the past 22
quarters. Talk about iPad canibalization…

iPad and iOS5

With iOS 4.3.5, I could 4-finger swipe up and display the recent-Apps tray and the controls.

I haven't figured out how to restore that functionality under iOS 5.

Any suggestions?

Yep, that is indeed right where it used to be.
That no longer exists on my iPad in iOS 5.

No "Multitasking Gestures" section or heading or switch.

Strange, it is on mine and I restored to the public release and set up as
new last night.

Is it an iPad 1 or 2?

IIRC, I saw a tweet from someone that they had to jailbreak to get it on
iPad 1s...

Per Twitter -
SGpad: I'm told that jailbreaking an iPad 1 can restore gestures, but that
they were also removed from "dev mode." (Haven't
confirmed.)<http://twitter.com/SGpad/statuses/124506391879745536>from

Dual-boot Mac and Linux

For Bill Boulware, or any other multi-OS expert:

Can Boot Camp ONLY be used to set up a partition for Windows, or could one instead install, say, Ubuntu Linux in it, and either boot directly into Linux, or use the partition within VMWare Fusion or Parallels?

I've never used Boot Camp only Parallels, VMWare Fusion, and for an hour
VirtualBox.

You can install Ubuntu or any version of Linux in those as well as most
versions of Windows.

I do know that if you have a Boot Camp partition and use VMWare you can then
use that partition as a virtual machine as well as a Boot Camp partition but
I have never attempted to use Boot Camp for anything....

Jim,
Not officially supported, but it works, at least with Ubuntu.

Jim;

I'm noot an expert, but I do recall from Ubuntu (Version 8, 9) that when you run the installer, it will wrap whatever is there in its own boot manager. So, IF you can boot an Ubuntu distro DVD / USB and there is a free partition, you'll likely get the Linux (LILO?) bootloader even before the Apple bootloader. after the install is completed. That's the way I was able to get Ubuntu installed on a Windows machine. I have not tried it on a Boot Camp enabled Mac yet. Probably won't either since Ubuntu has taken some very odd turns lately

The startup manager, rEFITt, forget it that's how it's capitalized, allows installation of virtually any system that will run on the hardware, Linux included. I have the manager installed on my machine and got at least one flavor of Linux, Mint, to run successfully in a single os fashion.

rEFIt: refit.sourceforge.net

Nice boot manager as well.

Chrome Browser for Mac

Hi All. I recently read an article from a writer at MacWorld about his dropping Safari and using the Chrome browser instead. He stated that with many tabs open WebProcess consumed so much memory that it kept slowing Safari down. If anyone on this Forum uses the Chrome browser for the Mac, I'd appreciate your comments about it. Thanks.
Out of curiosity, I've thought about using Chrome, but never have.

Right now, for me, with Safari open just briefly and using "ClicktoPlugin", WebProcess is still consuming well over 400MB with Safari using another 75MB. I haven't noticed any slowing of Safari, but I normally don't have too many tabs open at one time. I still shut Safari down occasionally to free up RAM...Jim
