Oh, I see what I missed. You are dragging a "Shared Folder" (showing the icon) as opposed to a folder that is "shared" (inside a shared resource). Shared Folders (with the icon) behave like drives on the remote system. Frankly, Mac should not use a folder icon for these as they are really mounted network drives.

Bottom line, you can't drag and drop a "Shared Folder" as you have discovered, but you can drag and drop the contents. This will work fine. When I back up shared folders this way, I create a target folder, then "select all" (Cmd-A) on the source and drag to the new target folder. I really don't want the copy to have exactly the same name anyway.

Better yet, use backup software, like Carbon Copy Cloner, to automate this.

Cheers,
tod

After reading his article and installing the needed software on my computer, I have decided I have no interest in using iCloud. I am retired and do not travel. Other than a cell phone which I use as a phone only I have no mobile devices or interest in getting some. Ten years ago yes as I was traveling a lot. I don't like the automatic features that seem to be coming this way. I want to be able to effect greater control in what gets syncs and what gets propagated.

I keep looking for a cell phone that is a CELL phone only. One that receives, sends calls and stores phone numbers. I carry my phone in my pocket. The camera operates from a button on the side. I have many dozens photos on my foot taken as i remove phone from pocket. I have yet to be able to find a cell phone without a camera. Texting for me on a phone is a nuisance as only texts i get are trash and I have to spend time removing them and on my wife's phone. In some ways I personally am not happy in the directions some of the technology is leading.

Personally I don't trust the cloud, by what ever name, for my personal or secure work data. I've a mechanism for automatically, manually synching what I need with Chronosynch (and iTunes for now).

Does there need to be a question?

iCloud is a fairly hot topic right now and discussing it should be
fair game. Whereas folks like Daly and Doug have lamented the loss of
useful features, Bob is just opining about the addition of what he
sees as *useless* features.

Personally, I'm in with the former group. The primary usefulness of
MobileMe -- for me -- derived from iDisk and Photo Gallery. In fact,
the ease and grace with which they allowed me to share photos and
other files with clients generated an awful lot of oohs and aahs...it
was a great reflection on Apple for folks not already in the fold.
Alas, Pogue's "online locker" and the Photo Stream are just not
substitutes.

iDisk had much greater capacity. Sure, I had to pay for it and I still
can, but it won't include the Photo Gallery functionality. And Photo
Stream, as far as I've been able to tell, doesn't offer much utility
to folks like me who take pictures with my Nikon rather than my iPhone
or iPad and edit/store them in Lightroom rather than iPhoto.

So yes, iCloud is free and offers a lot of "stuff" whereas MobileMe
had a price tag. The big difference, for me, is that MobileMe gave me
a couple of great tools and a bunch of fluffy extras, but iCloud is
just the fluff. Kudos to Apple for giving us so much time to find
suitable replacements. I already use DropBox, which is nice but
nowhere near the elegant simplicity of iDisk when it comes to sharing
files with literally anyone. And I've used Flickr for years but it's
membership requirements make it a difficult tool to use for easily
sharing anything from single photos to entire shoots with my clients.

No questions here, just chiming in on the loss of utility.

No, of course there doesn't *need* to be a question.

But as I was reading through the whine, I kept thinking "What is it you would like us to help you with here on *Macsupport*?"

Eventually I saw he just wanted to vent.

I *used* them, but when I saw the handwriting on the wall, I moved to DropBox. Synchronization of contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes is far more useful to me.

Do you actually notice a network problem? I find that this message pops occasionally on my network but unless I've actually created a hard conflict (I do use some static addresses), it resolves itself before I can even investigate. In other words, I see the message, but by the time I check, I can't find a conflict and everything is okay.

Disabling the Cap Locks Key

I have a program that would add a preference to disable the Cap Locks Key, but cannot remember its name. There is an option in Double Command, but it is not working for me (10.6.8).

Does anyone have a clue to what it's called?

Thanks,

Bill

It's in system preferences/keyboard. Select keyboard modifiers and toggle the caps lock to do nothing.

That should be 'Modifier Keys', not keyboard modifiers.

I have done just that, and can't recall just what I did, but...
This was published back in September, 2011, by ricochet:

http://johnhaller.com/jh/useful_stuff/disable_caps_lock/

Then Harry Flaxman said, today:

"It's in system preferences/keyboard. Select Modifier Keys and toggle
the caps lock to No Action."

That's the one I used. Works just fine.

Since you're using it, I assume you like it (Sandvox). It's not typically on
lists for easy-to-wrestle-with website generators "for the rest of us," but
Jumsoft makes some really nice looking templates for it. I've been thinking
of trying it out, but doing so is pretty near the bottom of my "do someday"
list :-)

So, is Sandvox easy to use?

It's actually very easy and, for me at least, intuitive.

What I like about it is that it switches between templates nicely. I was fiddling with a site for my daughter's artwork (she studies fine arts) and it was nice to be able to show her how her paintings would look in a number of completely different templates.

The only thing I don't like about Sandvox is that while switching things around in the nav bar area (you just drag and drop), I removed a page and completely lost it. It was really odd. It could be because I am still just using the trial version. I've put my redesign on hold for a bit, but hope to get back to it when I next have some down time.

Some of the sites that use ordinary Captchas seem to be adept at making
them more difficult to see with time. I use some sites that have added
shadows and blurs that are tough to make out. If I try more than 3
times and can't make it through, I say screw it...the site isn't worth
it! I'm 99.9% right about that judgement as well.

Audio works fine, but why bother. One can also use the screen zoom
feature, that I leave on all the time, to see it more clearly. Again,
why should I have to.

Howdy.

Try sitting further away from the screen for a moment and looking at
the CAPTCHA then.

Another trick that can help is to squint a bit at the CAPTCHA.

I have problems with them sometimes, too, most folks do, and that's the
nature of a pretty decent way to reduce spam and junk mail.

I've read that at one time before Yahoo started doing CAPTCHAs that
spammers had created millions of email accounts on Yahoo.

Even the first effort at a CAPTCHA was eventually bypassed by some
software that could read the warped style of CAPTCHA and then security
aware web sites put in place a more complex CAPTCHA style.
