I'm in Snow Leopard. I went to my root directory, i.e. the hard drive
itself, clicked shift-command-N and "Untitled Folder" was right
there. I am an admin user.

I haven't used Windows for years (other than helping someone to migrate
their iTunes Media) so I can't tell you.

I can't find anything unusual in my OS X user settings and don't recall any
option that might be relevant. My user has a password, of course.

If I do start to use either the home or picture directories for my picture

It depends on how you are using TM. Are you excluding any folders at
present?

I don't know. How would I tell. I would want every folder to be backed up
while I was working on them.

audio book not syncing in order

Posted by: "mirate" talk@signifydesign.com   ojosabroso

Mon Nov 14, 2011 1:24 pm (PST)

I am trying to help a friend who has a 30 GB Classic Windows iPod. I am using a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.5.

He has an audio book version of the Bible. The original version of the books is on a CD. In iTunes, after manually importing the MP3s, I changed the format of the books from Music to Audio Book.

In the iTunes window, the order is correct. In the iPod's Audio Books list, everything is in alphabetical order. How can I make the iPod list appear in the table of contents order?

Thanks,
Nicky

The easiest work around would simply be to append leading numbers to
each section. Remember that the sorting would be in ASCII order,
probably, so 11 would come between 1 and 2. In other words, Genesis
can be 01Genesis, etc.

There's an option to do that automatically for music imports in iTunes.
Does the same apply for audiobooks? I don't have any to try it on.

It is open to the public, limitation on number of subscriptions per hour
though to keep servers from being overloaded.

I've been using beta since it was available, works pretty well even over 3G
but does use a lot of data.

Sent from a mobile device, please ignore any autocorrected or typographical

I'm in the process of downloading it right now. What does the Match
service do? I didn't read anything, as I don't care all that much
about the cloud, if that is what it is.

Match is $24.95 a year. It keeps your devices, all of them, up to date with music that you purchased on the iTunes store. When first announced, the $25 was supposed to get you all of your music, regardless of where it was purchased. Not clear on if that's still true.

As far as I can tell it is still true I have been beta testing Music Match
and still goes to what Apple has told us.

Hard drive question

Posted by: "Robert Lenhart" roblenhart@earthlink.net   rlenhart

Mon Nov 14, 2011 2:29 pm (PST)

Am using a MacBook Pro.

Am trying to free up space on the hard drive by deleting various items, mostly downloaded music files.

Whenever I check 'about this Mac' and check 'Storage' the amount of space allocated to audio files is decreased but the amount of space allocated to 'Backups' is increased and I'm seeing that after deleting files I actually have less, not more, disk space.

What is going on. Do I need the space allocated to 'Backups'. If not, how can I delete it. Otherwise how can I prevent losing disk space after trying to increase it. If this continues at some point I'll run out of disk space by deleting files.

Help!

I am guessing that part of the information you didn't tell us is that you are using Time Machine to make backups some of the time when your Macbook Pro is connected to an external backup drive, and that some of the time you are not connected to that external drive.

Under Lion, Time Machine will continue to create "snapshots", storing them on the internal drive until it is re-connected to the external TM drive. These have a tendency to fill up your drive....

To stop this, you can open Terminal and enter
sudo tmutil disablelocal
Hit return, then (when it asks) enter your admin password.

I use Time Capsule for internet connection and external backup drive so the MacBook is always connected to the external drive. I just went into Time Capsule and confirmed a backup (the last one) was done at 6:23PM today.

I forgot to mention I've only noticed my problem started occurring when I upgraded TC from 7.52 to 7.6.

In any case where do I find Terminal so I can stop this.

Tivo Transfer on Lion

Posted by: "Jay Abraham" jaygroups@abrahamgroup.net   kerala01212001

Mon Nov 14, 2011 3:45 pm (PST)

Hi

Hope some of you have experience with the Tivo Transfer utility which is part of Toast.

I recently upgraded to a new Mac mini with Lion on it from a Power PC G5 Tower. I was using Toast 8 and when I ran it to see if it worked under the Intel chip it did. However now that I have installed it on my new computer, it doesn't recognize my Tivo's nor the already transferred programs.

If I double click on the transferred shows that were on my old Tower, the Mac Mini will launch them and they will start playing in the Toast Video player but no sound comes through.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jay

Migrating files to new computer

I'm trying to transfer everything from one iMac to another using Migration Assistant. I'm having a problem with an error message stating there is not enough room on the disk drive to migrate everything. However, if I migrate using an account I only used for testing, it has enough room.

How difficult is it to copy my regular user account over manually once the migration is complete?

Of course I just shot from the hip saying one could 't do this in the Mac OS. One cannot do so in Lion without entering an admin PW, and I think that's "a good thing." I just rebooted and confirmed what everyone else has stated about Snow Leopard.

In one of my replies to Jeannie, I noted that certain "root" folders were the same for every user (System, Library, Applications). I just tried to save an individual file to the root directory in Lion: Finder wouldn't let me, stating that I didn't have the correct permissions (I'm signed in as an admin user). However, the same dialog says I can change permissions on the file to enable saving to that location. I'm assuming that if I did so, the file would be available to every user.
