I used to use openDNS, but could not get around their redirects on 404 errors. I like to see the error so I can play with the URL and on redirect it is gone unless one is quick enough to cmd-period before the redirect.
I asked them if they have DNS servers the didn't redirect and they said no. So I went back to Earthlink's non-redirecting DNS IPs.

Bill,
I have used OpenDNS for quite awhile now. Never had the issue that you're experiencing. When does this happen? Any specific request your browser is making?

You don't need to worry about Comcast. You can specify any DNS you like. They don't care and are probably just as happy to have one fewer on their DNS servers. Users have always had the option of specifying their DNS or even running their own. In the early days, ISPs often didn't bother to run their own DNS at all. They sent customers to "public" DNS servers. As the ISP's got huge, that became unacceptable from a customer service point.
Cheers,
tod

It happens when you click a link for a domain, subdomain or URL that does not exist (often mispelled in an email) or a bad older URL.
I see it a lot.

This is what Yahoo Groups says:
Although Yahoo! Groups safeguards your email address from mass harvesting, you should know that in most cases, your email address will become known to the group through normal interaction. Please read this page carefully to understand the details concerning the visibility of your email address on the service.
• If you post a message to the group via email, your email address will appear in the message. (This is standard email protocol and there's no way of getting around it.)
• Whenever a page containing your email address is displayed to other members or made "public" to non-members, we mask your address to prevent mass harvesting. For example, if your email address is "joe@xyfoobar.com ," we display "joe@x..." However, in most cases, the owner and moderators of your group can see your email address (it won't be masked for them as they often need to see member addresses to manage the group).
• Some groups allow you to hide your email address entirely from the group (including from the group owner and moderators). If you choose this option, your email address won't be disclosed to the group at all, but you must post messages to the group from the Groups web site. (You'll still be able to receive group messages via email). Please note that not all groups offer you this option, as it is a per-group setting controllable by the creator of the group.
• If you're concerned about your email address being known to other members, we suggest you set up a special address for community services like Groups. You can easily do that by signing up for Yahoo! Mail.

Yes, I am a member of apple-iphone, and just started getting this horrible spam this week. Totally the worst.
They claim that they're sending it as a result of a Craigslist posting.

In this case it doesn't matter if you do, the spam is just claiming
it's due to a personals ad and includes pornographic images. I've had
to set up GMail filters to catch most of them so they get deleted
immediately.

Interesting to read about the spam some people get. I belong to a couple of Yahoo Groups, a couple of Forums, and occasionally look at Craig's List, but I get almost no spam. Just dumb luck on my part, helped by Gmail's filters, which I never touch. I've always assumed that somehow Gmail filtered out spam, but didn't have any idea how they did that....JC

The one account of mine that gets no spam and hasn't for years, is Gmail. I don't know what's going on with their filters, but they work well. They are superior to any others that are used.

It would be more advantageous to have the Moderators changing the posting privileges...you can have Yahoo Groups send reminders... than it would be to give new Members immediate posting privileges.
> But don't spend too much time thinking about the above paragraph. Starting from now, all new members will automatically have the right to post to Mac Support Central, without moderation. If they post spam, they will be removed quickly.
There was a Mac support type Yahoo Group that I belonged to earlier this year, until I became swamped with disgusting porno. After a little digging around, I found it all stemmed from one Member, who somehow gathered all our email addresses. To this day, I still receive the odd porno message, although I have been able to eliminate 98% of it.
I have owned my share of Yahoo Groups, so I know that a lot is expected from Moderators, but their efforts are so welcomed, if not always mentioned. I would be glad to become a moderator if you are short of people.

Question on Mail and setting up Rules for Junk
Posted by: "Jay Abraham" jaygroups@abrahamgroup.net kerala01212001
Fri Nov 11, 2011 7:28 am (PST)
Hi,
I had a question of how the Mail Rules apply. I am operating 10.5.8 -
Leopard with Mail 3.6 on a PowerPC. I have rules set up to move all
mail to Junk unless it is in my previous recipients, in my Address
book or meets some other criteria (e.g. one addressee is macsupport).
This seems to work to filter most Junk mail and when I get a mail from
someone I want that went inadvertently to Junk, I add them to my
address book. However, lately I have been getting some Junk messages
that show up in my Inbox even with these filters.
These Junk messages aren't from someone in my address book or who meet
any other of the Rules I set up - how are they getting by the filters
I set up?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jay

Tracking the Stock Market

I am having difficulty with an intermittent non-functioning Stock Tracker "dashboard widget."
I think the one I have been using for quite some time might be from Yahoo Finance.
All I am endeavoring to do is monitor about a dozen stocks, without having to deal with going through the lengthy process of logging in to my broker`s website.
Could someone recommend a simple yet efficient replacement widget that I could easily download directly to my "dashboard?"
I have a PowerBook G4 but I am running OSX 10.5.8.
Thanks as always and Happy Thanksgiving.

I used to have problems with the Apple stock tracker widget (it would
update but I could no longer add stocks) - however this only happened
on a couple of computers but not all of them. I then switched to
iStocks which is available at maba.wordpress.com/widgets/
It worked well and has the ability to track international stocks.
However I started having some problems with it a few days ago - the
Dow Jones Industrial average wouldn't update and I couldn't switch
between % and value changes.
I deleted all the widgets, restarted the computer and then put the
original Apple Stock Tracker widget and an updated copy of the iStocks
widget back into the dock. This seems to have solved all the problems
but now I have to enter all the 50-60 stocks I'm tracking back in.
I think something probably gets corrupted in the widget and the normal
Apple Maintenance activities doesn't seem to fix it.

iPhone battery woes
Posted by: "John Masters" johnmasters@me.com joemastersk

I have had an iPhone 3G for over three years now. Always put it on charge before going to bed and take it off charge first thing in the morning. After three years the battery is still good. On Monday I upgraded to the iPhone 4 (not 4S). Last night I applied the iOS 5.0.1 update. Took the phone to work after unplugging it at 6AM. It was on standby till 10AM when I went to make a call. The battery was completely discharged so I've been without a phone, camera, PA, notetaker all day.
Now recharging again. Could it be the iOS update or could it be something else? Surely a battery on a 4 day old phone should last longer than 4 hours on standby.

I would check the logs and settings and if it happens again, make an
appointment at store. While it is far from normal (standby time I think is
300 hours, each item being used diminishes that but I can easily go 2 days
between charges)

John, if that was a new iPhone 4 I would immediately return it and demand a new one. As Bill and others will undoubtedly tell you, the battery on the iPhone 4 (owned a 4 before I bought the 4S) is superb.

I have a 5 year old Mac book, it works pretty well still, I just need to upgrade the memory. Where can I get the best and least expensive memory from? How easy is it to install myself? I think mine takes up to 2gb Andy
