I don't understand this. The term is commonly used on just about any
platform, including Windows. Its location has moved from one Windows
version to another but it has always been there. In Vista and Win7 it's
effectively the same as in OS X.

Thank you, Brent, I just did that , and you are right. Now to see if that
folder will show up in my LR import panel.
Ok just tried it, and it doesn't show up. The LR import panel only shows
folders on my Macintosh Hard drive. How can I get that folder I just
created in my home to show up in the macintosh Hard drive?
I need those folders from each shoot to be able to be accessed by Light
room, and then by Photoshop.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iPads taking over:
Apple to revamp the Genius Bar with iPads, drop the Macs via 9to5Mac by
Mark Gurman on 11/12/11
Typically when you walk up to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store,
you will be met with multiple Apple Geniuses with MacBook Pros in front
of them. These MacBook Pros have been utilized to facilitate repairs,
look up customer information, and order new parts. Starting early next
week, in at least some Apple retail markets, the MacBook Pros will
disappear in favor of… iPads. These iPads will vastly improve the
customer experience and the overall flow of the Apple Retail Store.
Read all about it after the break:
Apple Store Geniuses currently use these MacBook Pros to access a piece
of software called GCRM. This software allows Apple Store Geniuses to
see if a customer's product is in warranty, what repairs can be done to
it, the recent repairs done to the device, and what parts can be
ordered for it. In addition, research can be done on these MacBook Pros
on how to repair and repairs can be ordered through the laptops. Now,
Apple is supplying Apple Stores with iPads that can mirror that
functionality and replace the MacBook Pros.
Apple replacing the stationary MacBook Pros with iPads for Genius Bar
functions is a major move that will not only make the Genius' job
easier, but provide a much better experience for Apple's customers that
are looking for repairs and/or help from the Genius Bar. The MacBook
Pros are stationary so they cannot be moved from the Genius Bar. The
iPads are portable, so the tablets can allow Geniuses to essentially
help customers anywhere in the store. This would open up space at the
Genius Bar and allow repairs to be facilitated much more quickly.
Due the size of MacBook Pros, Apple has been limited to fitting only a
few the computers at Genius Bars. Typically, the Genius Bar can only
service as many people as computers at one time at the Genius Bar. Now,
due to the size and price of iPads, Apple could service more people at
one time at the Genius Bar by installing multiple iPads. Apple fairly
recently instated a system called MobileGenius which runs the iOS
Diagnostic service I previously detailed. This service only works with
iOS devices, while the new iPads should cover Macs and Apple's other
non-iOS products, too.
When a repair is scheduled or a device is replaced, Apple typically has
customers sign a paper receipt. While this may not make its way to the
initial launch of the new Genius Bar – which is a part of Apple's
"Apple Store 2.0″ initiative – Apple's retail software team is working
on ways for customers to be able to sign their signatures on iPads,
rather than on printed pieces of paper. Just like the iPod touch
MobileGenius and EasyPay systems can do. Thanks JMFM and iDannyOcean!

Re: Battery life in iPhone 4

Same here, Blaine. I had an iPhone 3G for quite a while, and when the contract ran out I went to a BlackBerry like my husband had.
It took me about a year of disgust and animosity to return to the iPhone. I got an iPhone 4 about 2 weeks after the appearance of the 4s, which I didn't want to wait 6 weeks for. And, as it turns out, that was a wonderful decision.
I love my 2007 iMac, my iPad 2, and my iPhone 4.

Does anyone know the location where the initial disk image of Lion is transferred to by the Mac App Store is stored, before it extracts the ESD file and deletes the disck image file?
I'm trying to get a copy to burn to dvd, but I never noticed where it went the first time. I'm redownloading and want to catch ti before it's gone.

Merge two computers or load it new.
Posted by: "Greg Roberts" gregrobertsphoto@yahoo.com gregrobertsphoto

I have purchased a new iMac, 27" 3.4 i7. Currently I have been using a MBP, mid 2009, having problems and still on Applecare. The problem with the MBP has been two logic board replacements and now kernel problems that occur while using FW and the drives. -- I plan to ask about that too. I'm not going to give my MBP to apple for repair until my iMac is up and running.
Question: What is the best way to merge my data on the MBP and my iMac? I have the disks to reinstall software on the new machine, or have bought the apps on the App Store, like iPhoto and other software. Any best practice on this matter?
On the MBP, I have been getting kernel problems while using both powered and unpowered hard drives via FW. The solution is to bring the computer into the store and possibly get a new logic board. This will make three and I am worried they are missing other problems. Any ideas on this would be appreciated. The other problems were loss of screen, both on the computer and on external, and then computer lock ups.
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
One thing I can say about Applecare is that if you're having the same problem over and over again, Apple may sooner or later offer to replace the machine. I know that many people have had this happen, myself included. As I relay occasionally here, my last iMac was replaced on the absolute last night of it;s Applecare coverage.
I did not merge data, however, I migrated my data to my new machine via a Firewire external hard drive. This is probably the best way to move existing data and accounts to a new machine.
The Mac App store is pretty much automatic. Once you log on, launch the app store app and give it few minutes after loggingn on. It will then recognize what is installed and what is not. You will be offered the links to redownload everything that you purchased. Be sure to log on with the same id(s) you used for the purchases.
Migration Assistant is probably the most handy feature of OS X when it comes to moving machines. When the migrate is done, depending upon how fully you migrate, the new machine may look cosmetically and structurally (os wise), as the old machine.

Harry, thank you. I, at this time, just want my computer to work correctly. I've had the machine gone three times, each taking five days each. Getting to be old!
Thanks for the tips on the migration. Will I have problems due to operating systems, my MBP has Snow Leopard and my new machine will have Lion. I'm not going to upgrade my MBP until I've resolved my current problems.

Absolutely no problem going from an older operating system to a newer one. Not possible the other way. Before you even start the new machine, you can connect the two machines either by a Firewire cable or ethernet cable (preferred due to greater speed), and use Migration Assistant from the startup program. You don't need to create any new accounts. Everything will be transferred over. Oh yes, prior to starting the new machine, connect them and start the old machine in Target disk mode. There are several ways to do this. I believe starting up holding down command-t starts in target disk mode. This makes the old machine look like an external drive to the new machine.
That saves the step of backing up to an external drive.
SImple and easy. No muss, no fuss.
The setup routine will initially prompt you to move data from an old computer, a disk, or whatever. That's where you select the source, your old machine. Nothing more is necessary.

I don't have a Time Capsule, but I do believe there is a provision to migrate back from one in the Migration Assistant. Migrating back only offers the data the way it is set up in the source machine. There is no provision to take one account and spilt it into two. The work there is pretty much by hand AFAIK. You can use the Time Machine data to restore as many machines as you want, AFAIK. I've done two off of one external hard drive.

Is your ultimate goal to merge the data into one account?
If so, that might be better accomplished by migrating one, and using one of several pieces of synchronization software to merge the data from the user account on the other.

Well I'm happy that others are having the intended experience.
I still get no download of the "Install Xcode" installer application
to my Applications folder or any other indication that clicking the
"Download" button on the App Store's Xcode page does anythig at all.
At least on my other Mac running SL, when I attempt to download the
installer app I get the error "... cannot download because the Mac
isn't running Lion".
Not sure where to turn now...
Suggestions?

Harry, Thanks for the tips. This machine does not have the pinhole next to the drive. that was the first thing I looked for.
I feel kind of foolish because I finally realized (after a day of distress) that all I had to do was hold down the power button for about 5 seconds and the machine would shut down. I had to do that hundreds of times over the years with Windows machines.
After it shut down I let it sit for a minute and when I powered up all was fine and I was able to eject the dick in the usual manner.
Thanks for the reply.
I have another question about backing up which I will post in a separate message.

Bobby,
I thought you had shut down. It was unclear. Yes, anyway, the two tricks I told you about the mouse button and the eject key will work when powering up from a cold shutdown.
You're quite welcome. Enjoy!

This has probably already been mentioned but restarting the machine while holding down the mouse button will eject the disc. If you don't want to reboot running utilities and cloosing the disc and then clicking on that eject button will do it.

The machine was not responding to any input when posted my plea for assistance.
Thanks

time machine backup
Posted by: "bobbystar" bobbystar@yahoo.com bobbystar
Sun Nov 13, 2011 11:32 am (PST)
I want to do a backup of my Macbook Pro using Time Machine.
Is there a way to do a backup over my network to a hard disk attached to a Compaq desktop via a USB connection? The Compaq is running Windows XP.
I am hoping to avoid hooking the external drive to my Macbook as it is usually attached to the Compaq.
Thanks,
Bobby

I don't believe so, because the disc or partition has to be formatted for a Mac in GUID format.
If the drive or partition is formatted correctly, yes. If it is possible or how to do that is not within my experience.

Im glad to hear that. I also found out in the meantime that if I encounter any problems I can bring it back within 15 days, so I guess I have nothing to loose.
