Okay, weird question. I don't want to back up to iCloud. I want to back up
to my computer. I want a full, 100% backup of my iPhone/iPad, which
includes literally hundreds of ebooks in GoodReader, which would obviously
be way too large for my free cloud account. So how do I configure
iTunes/IOS5 to back up only to my computer, rather than to the cloud?

Thanks,
Anne

It is an option when setting up iPhone and is on the front page of iTunes
when you plug in the device, you can select iCloud or Computer and do manual
syncs to either one at any time.

I have a similar question. I am gonna give my son an iPad for Christmas. I don't necessarily want all my apps or pics to show up on his iPad.

It is only an option when you sync or if I take a picture on the
iPhone does it automatically upload somewhere?

If you have PhotoStream on, every time you take a picture it is pushed to
all other computers (Mac & Windows) and devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod) that
have PhotoStream turned on. You can turn it on or off or any/all devices.

The iCloud backup is something that is only done over WiFi, when the device
is plugged in and locked/asleep (IE Charging at home at night) and you can
turn each app on/off so if you don't want to backup Camera, iBooks, Kindle
or Magazine Apps just turn them off. The backup in iTunes doesn't backup
content because it can be resynced and iCloud backup is the data on your
phone and when you restore from it, it knows what apps you had and then
redownloads them form the App Store. It makes switching devices VERY easy -
you don't ever have to plug it into iTunes if you don't want.

This would be a real problem for me figuring out what I have read as my husband and I share a Kindle account so that we can share books also. I probably have 500 or more books in the archived account and another 100 downloaded queued up to read. Just so you know, we have a motorhome and when we are in travel mode I read and read and read!

Chiming in: when Apple introduced NOTES for the iPhone.... I too thought it was great. Till it failed and all the notes did not sync and they disappeared. I really needed them or at least one very important note that had a combo....
Well.... I will NOT USE notes for anything anymore. It failed when I need it the most. I've since switched over to Evernote. Been happy since. Try it... much better then Apples Notes. And I'm a Apple guy. It's free.

Ever since we went to Windows 7 $4 bit iTunes has never been an easy update. I've always had to download it.
When I try the auto update I get a lib386.obj not found error.
I wonder if it is just a Win 7 problem or my system.

It took me some time with win 7 but i did get it to work. To correct this i had to:
1. turn of virus protection
2. uninstall Bonjour
3. I then did a manual update piece by piece however, the auto update should work

Good luck

iCloud Arrives For Everyone

Sent to you by Brent via Google Reader: iCloud Arrives For Everyone
via App Advice by Bryan M. Wolfe on 10/12/11

Apple today has taken the “beta” out of its new iCloud service.
Available at iCloud.com, the service replaces MobileMe and works with
iOS 5.0, which will be released later today.

First announced in June, iCloud is Apple̢۪s new cloud-based feature that
includes iTunes and Documents in the Cloud, Photo Stream, cloud backup,
and much more.

While the iCloud website is now officially available to everyone, we
suggest waiting a little bit more before actually using it. Later
today, Apple will be releasing the above-mentioned iOS 5.0 along with
an update for Mac OS X Lion. Only then will each iCloud component
actually work across all Apple devices.

Today is the first of two huge days for Apple. Along with the iOS
5/iCloud launch, the Cupertino, California-based company releases the
iPhone 4S on Friday.

Confused about iCloud? Don̢۪t worry, as AppAdvice has it covered.
Beginning today, we̢۪ll be posting a number of articles all about iOS 5.
Stay tuned.

OK....I think I figured it out. I am assigned an "evernote" email ID....

I can go into my apples notes....and email directly to that evernote id...

I tried it...and it copies it into the evernote app.

I am thinking of using both. Notes is easy....have it backed up like
this...easy as well.

iCloud goes live, help site up as well

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iCloud goes live, help
site up as well via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/12/11

Today is the big day when the millions of owners of iOS devices get to
update to the latest and greatest version of Apple̢۪s mobile operating
system, the iOS 5. If history is anything to go by, the iOS 5 updated
should appear in iTunes around 10am Pacific Time, as did the iOS 3 and
4 firmware updates. Laying the groundwork for the much-anticipated
software update, the company yesterday issued iTunes 10.5, the App
Store published a bunch of iOS 5 app updates while digital magazines
began populating the Newsstand app.

iCloud, Apple̢۪s free of charge online services suite to go along with
iOS 5, has gone live for the general public, too. You can sign up for
iCloud at icloud.com using your Apple ID credentials (check out to the
subtle iCloud logo animation when opening the site, very nice). iCloud
gives you fife gigabytes of free storage (paid upgrades are available),
but content purchases on the iTunes Store don̢۪t count against your
quota. As you know, an Apple ID is a user name you can use for just
about everything you do with Apple, which includes shopping the iTunes
Store, logging in to iChat or MobileMe, buying products from the Apple
Online Store and now it lets you access iCloud to store your content.

As you can see in the screenshot above, iCloud has lost the beta flag.
In addition to the iCloud cheat sheet for Apple employees 9to5Mac
posted yesterday, users can now access a dedicated help site at
http://help.apple.com/icloud. Available assets include the iCloud
basics, the Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Find My iPhone web apps, the
Photo Stream functionality and Documents in the Cloud overview.
Recommended browser for accessing iCloud are Apple̢۪s Safari 5 for Mac
or Windows, Mozilla̢۪ Firefox 5 for Mac or Windows, Microsoft̢۪s Internet
Explorer 8 on Windows and Google̢۪s Chrome 12 on Mac or Windows. Go past
the fold for more observations.

The iCloud registration process requires you to select your language
and time zone. The prettified web interface looks business and is
consistent with the linen theme in OS X Lion and the iOS 5 device setup
interface, ensuring no customer is left confused and underscoring how
iOS 5 and iCloud are meant to work together. The interface includes web
apps to access, review and edit your contacts, calendars and email. You
can also located your device on a map using the Find My iPhone web app
which works in conjunction with a free iOS app from the App Store. You
will also be able to see your friends who have opted to share their
location with you, which requires the free Find My Friends app for iOS,
not available yet at post time. The iCloud interface also includes the
web-based version of iWork productivity suite, allowing you to view and
share your office documents (but not edit them in the cloud)

Sprint Will Sell iPhone 4S Unlocked, Verizon Will Unlock If You Ask

Maybe I should have ordered Verizon
Sent to you via Google ReaderSprint Will Sell iPhone 4S Unlocked, Verizon
Will Unlock If You Ask<http://feeds.wired.com/~r/GearFactor/~3/42lXZOfW37o/>

Sprint will sell iPhones with the SIM slot unlocked, and Verizon will unlock
it for you after 60 days

If you're planning on traveling outside the U.S with your shiny new iPhone
4S, you should probably buy it from Sprint or Verizon. Both carriers have
decided to unlock the micro SIM slot so any card can be popped in and used.

Sprint will sell its iPhones unlocked, whereas Verizon will unlock the
handset after 60 days if you call up and ask nicely, according to Jason
Snell of Macworld. Out of the box, both carriers supply the iPhone 4S with a
roaming SIM which will allow use on GSM networks abroad. While this is
handy, and you will receive incoming calls to your regular number, it's
usually way cheaper to pick up a pre-pay sim while abroad (pro tip: if you
visit the UK, buy a pre-pay iPad
SIM<http://www.google.com/gwt/x?source=reader&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.argos.co.uk%2Fstatic%2FProduct%2FpartNumber%2F5490866.htm>from
Argos. It's £10, or $15, comes loaded with 1GB and lasts for up to a
month).

When at home, both Sprint and Verizon iPhones will use their CDMA radios.

AT&T, the one carrier which uses the SIM-powered GSM network, will not be
selling the iPhone 4S unlocked. No surprises there, right? Nevertheless,
AT&T might just change its mind if it loses significant sales thanks to its
closed policy. Then again, as the iPhone is now most definitely a
mass-market phone, few people will probably even care.
