You've got iOS 5 and you're excited to start using the awesome new

9to5Mac has confirmed that the iTunes in the Cloud portion of iTunes
has started rolling out in Canada, and we've also received tips from
the UK, France, Australia, and elsewhere. Depending on your exact
location, you should soon see the "Purchased" tab within the iTunes
Store on your iOS device, as well a Music toggle in the Store tab
within Settings.app under "Automatic Downloads". We're keeping out
fingers crossed for Apple to broaden their iTunes Match licenses for
international appeal as well.

I haven't been able to see the iOS 5 via iTunes yet this morning. Am I missing something? I have already downloaded the iTunes 5 and backed up my devices in anticipation of updating the iPhone and Ipads this morning.

What you're missing is that iOS 5 has not been released yet.

Apple unleashes iOS 5, a major brain transplant for your iPhone, iPo

Get to downloading, it is out -

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple unleashes iOS 5,
a major brain transplant for your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad via
9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/12/11

Great news from Cupertino, California: The wait is finally over. After
nearly four months of extensive public testing, bug squashing, teeth
gnashing and under-the-hood tweaking, Apple today released the final
consumer version of iOS 5, a major and most ambitious upgrade to its
mobile operating system yet. iOS 5 is compatible with iPhone 3GS,
iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, third- and fourth-generation iPod touch, as
well as both iPad 1 and iPad 2. However, some features are
resource-intensive and thus only available on recent devices. Note that
Siri, an intelligent personal assistant users can converse with,
remains exclusive to iPhone 4S for the time being.

Preceding the iOS 5 roll out, Apple earlier this morning posted Find My
Friends and AirPort Utility apps, enabled iCloud accounts for everyone,
flipped the switch on the Newsstand Store and rolled out music
re-downloading service dubbed iTunes in the Cloud in the U.K., Canada,
Australia and other international markets. The iOS 5 software is
available as a free firmware update in desktop iTunes. Just connect
your device to a Mac or PC and follow the onscreen instructions in
iTunes.

Due to iOS 5 installation being a major brain transplant, you're
strongly recommended to back up all your devices in iTunes before
proceeding. In addition, you should copy your device backups and keep
them safe, per instructions after the break. Also worth mentioning, the
iTunes Terms and Conditions have been updated this morning, related to
iTunes Match terms and collection of certain information from your
iTunes library. The iTunes Match service is due for public consumption
end of October. It is also rumored to go worldwide should Apple secure
necessary licenses from record labels.

Now, onto iOS 5. As you know, iOS 5 has over 200 new features plus a
handful of biggies.

Take iMessage, Apple's proprietary messaging protocol for instant
messaging with other iOS 5 devices free of charge. iMessage bypasses
carrier's costly text or MMS messages (requires data connection though)
and delights with the typing indicator, read receipts and the ability
to exchange photos, videos, contacts or locations. For a more in-depth
overview, check out 9to5Mac's exhaustive iMessage guide.

Another big feature is the Notification Center which brings all those
annoying notifications from app into a tidy panel accessed with a
pull-down gesture. Twitter integration and support for other social
accounts make sharing in iOS 5 more secure and uniform across apps.
Other noteworthy goodies include wireless device sync with your
computer or iCloud, all-new Reminders and Newsstand apps, new Camera
features and a whole bunch of other improvements and little tweaks
evident throughout the system. If you're interested in everything iOS 5
has to offer, TiPB has a monster walkthrough.

Now, before you apply that firmware update…

As a rule of thumb, you're advised to perform a full backup of your iOS
device in iTunes to restore to in case something goes wrong. Simply
connect your device to a computer, launch iTunes 10.5, right click the
device in the Devices pane and click the Back Up option.

After you've backed up all your iOS devices in iTunes, quit the program
and perform a Time Machine backup of your system. Alternatively, copy
the backup folder to a safe location, such as an external hard drive or
a USB thumb drive. iTunes places the backup files in the following
places:

Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple
Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple
Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

We'd recommend starting from scratch and getting rid of your "old" app
data, settings and other baggage which could degrade the experience.
Setting your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad as a new device will especially
make your life easier if you intend on cutting the cord and syncing
with iCloud, iTunes be damned. Beware, though: Setting up a new device
(as opposed to restoring from the latest backup) means losing all your
text messages, missed calls list, device settings, as well as documents
and settings from both built-in and third-party apps – literally, all
data iTunes stores in a backup file each time you sync your device.

How would having iCloud b/u be any different than however you're doing it
now?

Or do you mean that you want the cloud to keep track of what books are on
what device -- which the Kindle app does now & why would that change?

I have different books loaded on different devices & Kindle (the app & I
guess you could call it the K-Cloud?) keeps them all straight, along with
where I am in each book.

The only way I know I've already read a book that's still loaded is if I
just know I've read it. Sometimes I keep them around for reference for a
while.

This would be a real problem for me figuring out what I have read as my
husband and I share a Kindle account so that we can share books also. I
probably have 500 or more books in the archived account and another 100
downloaded queued up to read. Just so you know, we have a motorhome and when
we are in travel mode I read and read and read!

When you set up the new iPad, & if it's using the same (your) iTunes
account, you'll have a choice of what to load on the device.

I don't even have all my apps, music, etc. on *my* devices (any of them.)
Each is set up with what I want on that particular device at that time.

I don't see why the new iCloud system would make that system any different.

Of course, if he has access to all the material w/o having to go through the
computer (&/or you), it may be harder for you to keep control of it.

If I back up my entire iPad with all the ebooks on it, it would be well over
the 5GB free storage we get with iCloud. Even backing up my iPhone, without
all the ebooks, is over 5GB. Yes, of course I can select not to back up
certain things to the cloud, but I want one single restore file for my
devices in case I should have to restore or, God forbid, replace one of my
devices. I'd rather just back up to my computer or external drive than have
to either reload data that wasn't backed up, or pay for extra cloud storage.
I have nothing against the cloud, but 5GB isn't enough storage space to be
useful to me, and I don't want to pay for more when I already have backup
options available to me at home.

The update bonanza continues… Apple has just issued an updated iPhoto
application to go with your latest iOS 5 firmware and the just released
Lion 10.7.2 software update.iPhoto 9.2, which brings compatibility with
iCloud and its Photo Stream feature as well as a number of other
improvements and fixes. iPhoto 9.2 enables compatibility with iCloud
and iOS 5 features, including Photo Stream that automatically imports
all photos taken on your iOS 5 devices with the Photo Stream feature
turned on. The 376MB download requires OS X Lion. The software is
available via Software Update in Mac OS X or via the Mac App Store at
this link. Don't panic if you don't see it yet, these things take a
while to propagate. Full release notes after the break.

- Left and right swipe gestures can now be used to navigate between
photos in Magnify (1-up) view
– Previously imported photos are now displayed in a separate section of
the Import window
– Book/calendar themes and card categories can now be selected using a

incorrectly
– Rebuilding a library now correctly preserves saved slideshows and
books

Wednesday Continues: Apple's iOS Movies App Is Awesome [Ios Apps] via
Gizmodo by Sam Biddle on 10/12/11
Apple's "iTunes Movie Trailers" app is one hell of a misnomer: it
doesn't just beam down the giant library of trailers we love. The new
app lets you buy tickets, find nearby theaters, and chart film releases
on a calendar. More »

Sorry if this stuff is getting old, they are releasing way too many
updates for one day

Remote, and Find My iPhone apps for iOS 5 via 9to5Mac by Jordan Kahn on

Along with updates to just about every other one of their apps, Apple
has also just updated iMovie, Remote, and Find My iPhone for iOS 5.

Find My iPhone has been updated to version 1.3 with the ability to find
your Mac, and the option to request a notification via email when a
device is located and online.

iMovie is updated to version 1.2.2 which brings support for iOS 5, and
enhanced support for videos imported from external cams. Remote brings
only iOS 5 support and the typical "stability and performance
improvements".

Thanks for keeping us informed. I am updating iPhone and made the mistake of typing in background (multitasking) and a message popped up while updating and had to restore my iPhone from backup and took the keystroke as STOP and now in loop. Ugh. Well, suggest don't type while updating. This may take awhile and hope that the restore doesn't go on too long, as I want to update my ipad today. LOL and all the other apps that are out there.

Re: Windows 7 64 bit - Problem installing iTunes 10.5

I had no problem with two W7-64 computers.
But I did have to go to the Control Panel separately to set the
program-association defaults -- doing it from the iTunes box (even though it
brought up the same CP box) didn't seem to "take", or else I just didn't do
it right.

Yes, I'm on Windows 7, 64-bit and I had iTunes 10.4. I went to the Help tab,
selected Check for updates and had no problems.

I'm gonna wait

I'm gonna wait on the upgrade to iOS5. Maybe for quite a long while.

Given the troubles I've had upgrading the various 4.x's in the past year,
I'm going to wait until (a) I hear that things are going well, & probably at
least 5.1 is out :-) and (b) I have time to do complete sync/backups of my
three 5-able devices & go to the Apple Store to get 5.x done en masse.
Skip the hours of trying to d/l at home followed by farkled devices!

So far I haven't heard of anything all that compelling *to me* *in my life*
that I feel any need to rush.

Migration From MobileMe Services Also Goes Live via iPhone Hacks by

As expected, Apple has just launched iCloud – its new cloud based
services after releasing iOS 5 and Mac OS X 10.7.2. iCloud.com had gone
live earlier in the day, but it was still restricted to developers.
MobileMe users should now be able to migrate their accounts to iCloud
after they've upgraded their devices to [...]

iOS app via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/12/11

Apple has also released, as promised, its brand new iOS app for mailing
gorgeous cards, right from the palm of your hand. The Cards app,
according to Apple:

The new Cards app from Apple lets you create and mail beautifully
crafted cards personalized with your own text and photos — right from
your iPhone or iPod touch. Take a quick snapshot and with a few taps
and swipes, an elegant letterpress card is on its way to any address in
the world. Each card is just $2.99 when sent within the U.S. and $4.99
when sent to or from anywhere else. And that includes postage.

The killer feature? If you mail your card within the United States,
Apple will slap their own custom-designed stamp and use the United
States Postal Service Intelligent Mail barcode to send you a
notification the day the card is due to arrive – so you know when
you're about to make someone's day. The Cards app is available free of
charge from the App Store here. Our international readers may want to
wait a bit until the program propagates throughout all regional iTunes
Stores.
