Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iCloud goes live, help
site up as well via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/12/11

Today is the big day when the millions of owners of iOS devices get to
update to the latest and greatest version of Apple's mobile operating
system, the iOS 5. If history is anything to go by, the iOS 5 updated
should appear in iTunes around 10am Pacific Time, as did the iOS 3 and
4 firmware updates. Laying the groundwork for the much-anticipated
software update, the company yesterday issued iTunes 10.5, the App
Store published a bunch of iOS 5 app updates while digital magazines
began populating the Newsstand app.

iCloud, Apple's free of charge online services suite to go along with
iOS 5, has gone live for the general public, too. You can sign up for
iCloud at icloud.com using your Apple ID credentials (check out to the
subtle iCloud logo animation when opening the site, very nice). iCloud
gives you fife gigabytes of free storage (paid upgrades are available),
but content purchases on the iTunes Store don't count against your
quota. As you know, an Apple ID is a user name you can use for just
about everything you do with Apple, which includes shopping the iTunes
Store, logging in to iChat or MobileMe, buying products from the Apple
Online Store and now it lets you access iCloud to store your content.

As you can see in the screenshot above, iCloud has lost the beta flag.
In addition to the iCloud cheat sheet for Apple employees 9to5Mac
posted yesterday, users can now access a dedicated help site at
http://help.apple.com/icloud. Available assets include the iCloud
basics, the Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Find My iPhone web apps, the
Photo Stream functionality and Documents in the Cloud overview.
Recommended browser for accessing iCloud are Apple's Safari 5 for Mac
or Windows, Mozilla' Firefox 5 for Mac or Windows, Microsoft's Internet
Explorer 8 on Windows and Google's Chrome 12 on Mac or Windows. Go past
the fold for more observations.

The iCloud registration process requires you to select your language
and time zone. The prettified web interface looks business and is
consistent with the linen theme in OS X Lion and the iOS 5 device setup
interface, ensuring no customer is left confused and underscoring how
iOS 5 and iCloud are meant to work together. The interface includes web
apps to access, review and edit your contacts, calendars and email. You
can also located your device on a map using the Find My iPhone web app
which works in conjunction with a free iOS app from the App Store. You
will also be able to see your friends who have opted to share their
location with you, which requires the free Find My Friends app for iOS,
not available yet at post time. The iCloud interface also includes the
web-based version of iWork productivity suite, allowing you to view and
share your office documents (but not edit them in the cloud)

goes live ahead of iOS 5 release via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on
10/12/11

UPDATE: Here, a direct link to download the Find My Friends app from
the App Store.

Apple has just released the Find My Friends app which lets you locate
your contacts on a map and share your own location with them. The
program is not available directly on the App Store. Instead, you must
access the iCloud.com site on your iOS device (no need to log in, just
visit that URL) and hit the Install Find My Friends link, which takes
you right to the App Store landing page.

More information coming soon.

I think that you reset the System Management Controller. Google this term & find the method for your particular Mac.

OT: Camera Roll

On my iphone 4g if I select the "Photos" app a list appears: Camera Roll, then Photo Library. There is a large title covering the top of this list: "Albums". This title prevents me from selecting Camera Roll. Anyone know how to select Camera Roll beneath this obtrusive title? John R

Hi John,

This is normal but it shouldn't impact your ability to select the
camera roll. Can you select any of the albums listed. I have six
albums that get synced. Camera Roll, Photo Library, Last Import, Last
4 months, etc. If I touch any of them it gets selected and shows me
the pictures inside.

If you can select the other albums, maybe there isn't any pictures in
the Camera Roll? If not maybe a backup and restore might solve the
problem.

Address Book Hijacking, Windows/AOL, and Mac evangelism

Posted by: "jamesrob@sonic.net" jamesrob@sonic.net   jamesrob328i

Wed Oct 12, 2011 8:10 am (PDT)

We hold our partnership meetings in the office of one of our partners,
and those meetings are not uncommonly interrupted by that perky guy
announcing "YOU've got MAIL!" My own devices haven't greeted me thus
since long before Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks kept each other awake at night
(even then, I think one of them had a Mac).
This isn't about my partner; I consider my job done now that I see him
preparing presentations on his MacBook Pro or iPad2 or when he sends me
eMails "Sent from my iPhone."
--------------------
I have another friend whom I don't hear from often enough. Fortunately
or not, we typically get reacquainted when some hacker manages to hijack
her AOL address book. When that happened to her a year ago, she asked me
for advice about virus programs. I responded with the war cry "Get a
Mac" (often heard at scientific meetings when some poor guy's Windows
laptop won't sync to the projector). She wasn't amused.
Today I woke up, launched Entourage, retrieved mail (I'm still on POP),
and there she was (not), inviting me to visit a few places I was certain
she'd never been.
So, we caught each other up on things going on in our lives and families
on opposite coasts in a few quick messages, and then she said "I'm ready
to listen." What email client should I use?
Now I'm the one bereft of informed opinions. Here are a few things I
don't know:
1. Whatever client she chooses, will she be better protected from
intruder harvesting of her address book if she uses SSL connection to
her server? Can she even do that if she stays with AOL?
2. Will changing her password help protect her going forward?
3. Are Mac email clients (AOL or better) susceptible to having their
address books harvested like this?
4. Are there Windows malware protection programs that are better than
others at preventing this?
5. Isn't it the case that once it's happened, her only weapon against
what's already happened is to inform her correspondents of a new email
address and advise them to set their own spam filters to intercept
anything that comes from her old one?
6. Are there Windows PIM clients other than Outlook and its lesser
siblings that have sufficient marketshare to make them alternatives for
someone who'll need help from time to time?
Thanks so much,

Boy, Apple's servers must have been bombed within a couple of minutes after the update was released. My download rate went way down a few minutes in. No it's doing a fraction of a megabyte every 2 seconds or so.

Hmm--I'm nowhere near that rate. I stopped any net transfers or streaming. It'll just take a a few more minutes at this rate. I stopped and restarted twice, and nothing.

Haven't had this problem at all with any recent updates. Oh well.

Might or may not be pertinent, but...I was asked this morning whether I
wanted to download some software updates.

Security and Safari updates.
The security upgrade was about 142 Mb and the other (Safari) was 49 Mb.
From long experience, not at all a strain for MY system.

Yet, when I agreed to download both, the estimated d/l time was in the
order of 429 hours! WHAT? I deleted the d/l instructions!

Any idea why THIS happens?

On my 3rd try with iOS 5. It stalls mid-download each time. Same has not been true with assorted Mac OS updates.

Thanks Bill for heads up. Had just checked Software Update 20 minutes earlier and it was not there.

Attaching tech notes on changes in OS X 10.7.2.

Steve B.

********************

The 10.7.2 update is recommended for all OS X Lion users and includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac. It also includes support for iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services that automatically and wirelessly store your content on iCloud and push it to all of your devices. iCloud on OS X Lion includes the following features:
iCloud stores your email, calendars, contacts, Safari bookmarks, and Safari Reading List and automatically pushes them to all your devices.
Back to My Mac provides remote access to your Mac from another Mac anywhere on the Internet.
Find My Mac helps find a missing Mac by locating it on a map and allows you to remotely lock the Mac or wipe all its data.
Getting started with iCloud is easy. After installing the update, OS X will automatically present an iCloud setup panel. Simply enter an existing Apple ID or create a new one and then follow the on screen instructions. To learn more about iCloud visit http://www.apple.com/icloud.

The 10.7.2 update also includes Safari 5.1.1 as well as fixes that:
Allow reordering of desktop spaces and full screen apps in Mission Control.
Enable dragging files between desktop spaces and full screen apps.
Address an issue that causes the menu bar to not appear in full screen apps.
Improve the compatibility of Google contact syncing in Address Book.
Address an issue that causes Keynote to become temporarily unresponsive.
Improve VoiceOver compatibility with Launchpad.
Address an issue that causes a delay in accessing the network after waking from sleep.
Enable booting in to Lion Recovery from a locally attached Time Machine backup drive.
Resolve an issue that causes screen zoom to stop working.
Improve Active Directory integration.
For detailed information about Safari 5.1.1, please visit this website:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4922.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iPhoto 9.2 is out with
iCloud and Photo Stream support via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on
10/12/11

The update bonanza continues… Apple has just issued an updated iPhoto
application to go with your latest iOS 5 firmware and the just released
Lion 10.7.2 software update.iPhoto 9.2, which brings compatibility with
iCloud and its Photo Stream feature as well as a number of other
improvements and fixes. iPhoto 9.2 enables compatibility with iCloud
and iOS 5 features, including Photo Stream that automatically imports
all photos taken on your iOS 5 devices with the Photo Stream feature
turned on. The 376MB download requires OS X Lion. The software is
available via Software Update in Mac OS X or via the Mac App Store at
this link. Don't panic if you don't see it yet, these things take a
while to propagate. Full release notes after the break.

- Left and right swipe gestures can now be used to navigate between
photos in Magnify (1-up) view
– Previously imported photos are now displayed in a separate section of
the Import window
– Book/calendar themes and card categories can now be selected using a
pop-up menu in the carousel view
– Resolves an issue that could cause some pages of books to print
incorrectly
– Rebuilding a library now correctly preserves saved slideshows and
books

Migration From MobileMe Services Also Goes Live via iPhone Hacks by

As expected, Apple has just launched iCloud – its new cloud based
services after releasing iOS 5 and Mac OS X 10.7.2. iCloud.com had gone
live earlier in the day, but it was still restricted to developers.
MobileMe users should now be able to migrate their accounts to iCloud

Apple posts Cards for iOS app

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple posts Cards for
iOS app via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/12/11

Apple has also released, as promised, its brand new iOS app for mailing
gorgeous cards, right from the palm of your hand. The Cards app,
according to Apple:

The new Cards app from Apple lets you create and mail beautifully
crafted cards personalized with your own text and photos — right from
your iPhone or iPod touch. Take a quick snapshot and with a few taps
and swipes, an elegant letterpress card is on its way to any address in
the world. Each card is just $2.99 when sent within the U.S. and $4.99
when sent to or from anywhere else. And that includes postage.

The killer feature? If you mail your card within the United States,
Apple will slap their own custom-designed stamp and use the United
States Postal Service Intelligent Mail barcode to send you a
notification the day the card is due to arrive – so you know when
you're about to make someone's day. The Cards app is available free of
charge from the App Store here. Our international readers may want to
wait a bit until the program propagates throughout all regional iTunes
Stores.

Ethernet Splitter

Posted by: "Bill Morton" billmorton999@gmail.com   redpup99

Wed Oct 12, 2011 12:01 pm (PDT)

I am just setting up a new Mac & changing ISP's at the same time. When I
connected it all together I found that my new Motorola Gateway only has one
RJ45 outlet which I need for one of the computers. My old Cisco had 5
outlets like that, and my Brother printer (which has its own IP address), is
plugged into one of them.

I see simple 2/way ethernet splitters (RJ45) on the web for cheap prices.
Is that what I need here, or
do I need to step up to an Ethernet Switch instead? I would plug the
splitter into the Gateway,
then plug the computer and the printer into its two outlets. Seems almost
too simple?

Thanks in advance!

Bill

Never used a simple splitter. I would go with the switch (router) rather than a splitter.

Perhaps others have used the simple splitter and can offer some advice.

While they may look similar externally, a switch and a router are
distinct devices and must not be confused.

Bill I think you need a switch. I think the smallest one I've seen is
1 port in, 4 ports out (frequently & erroneously called a "5 port"
switch).

If the Gateway generates IP addresses for your small network, all you
need is a switch. If the Gateway does not allow more than a single IP
address (for whatever is plugged into its one RJ45), you will need a
router. The router will generate and assign the required unique IP
addresses for your computer(s), printer(s) and other networked
equipment.

Cheers,
Dave
