And this is the phone everyone's so bummed about? Good thing they didn't actually release an iPhone 5. There'd be knife fights.

Questions and Problems

iMac 3.06GHZ IntelCore2 Duo Processor
12GIGRAM
1TB HD - 2 Partitions (Snow Leopard 10.6.8 & Lion 10.7)
Plus Firewire connected 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12

I boot mostly on the Snow Leopard Partition. The Lion Partition always mounts, no problem. I run Time Machine and backup only the Snow Leopard Partition on the separate 500 GB HD.

Problem:
500 GB HD seems to forget how to mount, or is completely unable to mount. Yes, the connections are fine. There goes a secure backup I had made for weeks.

Problem:
My Snow Leopard Installer disk seems shot. I can see it mounted, booted from the Lion Partition, but I cannot create a disk image of it, alas. I cannot boot from the Installer disk anymore, drat. I tried creating a disk image of it months ago, but I cannot burn a new Installer DVD to replace my old installer for whatever reason.

Booting from Disk Warrior disk has not been able to correct the 500GB HD problems.

Can anyone suggest what has happened to the 500GB?
Is there an app that will force mount the 500GB HD?

As you have not said what this Time Machine disk
is, brand or how it is connected, I can only
guess. I do remember having a similar problem
with a WD external FireWire plus USB drive. The
solution was to disconnect the FireWire and then
plug it back in. As I recall (this was many years
ago) it did work okay on USB, but I wanted the
FireWire as I was using it as a backup, bootable
disk, and this was when I had a G5 machine. If
your eternal drive is dual interface then try
hooking it up the other way.

No ideas for this problem. Sorry.

Possibly it is just kaput. One possibility might
be sticktion. Try banging on the table
(seriously) to free it up. This used to be a
problem more many years ago, but I guess it can
still happen.

In what OS? I'm running 10.6.8 and the "about
this Mac" window shows only the startup disk, not
all my volumes. Where did you see this? Was it in
the "about this Mac" window under the Apple menu?

Go to the partition tab in Disk Utility and see
just what partitions you really do have.
Conceivably the untitled ones are super-small,
really an artifact of how you partitioned it, and
you might as well not bother about it.
I presume that your external 500GB drive does not
show up under Disk Utility, even if as an
unmounted drive? If so then it probably does show
a hardware problem. The good news is that
although you have probably lost your Time Machine
backups external drives are so inexpensive now
that it is an excuse to go from the meager 500GB
you have now to a TB or more for Time Machine
backups.

How are you able to determine that "the connections are fine" if it doesn't mount?

What brand/model of external case? Some have more problems than others.

The components involved include:
Firewire port on the computer
Firewire cable
Firewire port on the external case
Internal wiring of the external case
Controller chipset in the external case
Power supply in the external case
Actual drive failure of the external drive.

The first things I would try include restarting from a different user login, and performing a Safe Boot.

Can you read the DVD (see the contents)?
Do you have another computer or another optical drive to try it in?

1. When you install Lion, the installer creates a Recovery Drive partition.
2. Every HFS+ drive has a 128 MB EFI partition.

Windows XP frozen

Hello all,

I'm having a problem and I know there is a quick fix but I can't for
the life of me remember it. I thought I had it written down
somewhere, but I can't find it.

I am running OS 10.4.11 using parallels 3.0.

There is only one program that I need Windows for. And, right now,
it is stuck. The cursor won't go anywhere.

Please help!

Thanks

Upgrade is not an option at this time. There is a way to do this, I
just can't find it. I have done it before.

Thanks, though.

Safari refuses to scroll down

Using an iMac with Lion. Many times recently I've opened a website and I can read the top but when I try to scroll down, I can't. Using the mouse to drag the slider doesn't work, and the down arrow doesn't either. But when I switch to Firefox and the same website, everything's fine.

I'm not happy that Lion took away the up and down arrows, but I could cope if this didn't happen. I suppose the answer is: Use Firefox.

You can restore this and some other things in using a small program: Lion Tweaks

Try using the spacebar to scroll down and shift-scrollbar to scroll up.

Siri Is iPhone 4S-Only Today, But Where Will It Be Tomorrow?

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/10/siri-is-iphone-4s-only-today-but-where-will-it-be-tomorrow/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Siri Is iPhone 4S-Only
Today, But Where Will It Be Tomorrow? via Epicenter by Chris Foresman
on 10/11/11

Apple is launching the iPhone 4S this week with the recently unveiled
integration of Siri, a voice activated “assistant.” Siri accepts voice
input and can perform a range of actions on your iPhone, including
looking up information, adding calendar events, and even composing
short texts and e-mails.

Siri shows a lot of promise in realizing human computer interaction
using natural language. Right now, however, Apple seems to be wisely
keeping the feature firmly in the “beta” stage even as it seeks to
popularize talking to your cell phone to get things done. As iPhone 4S
users start using Siri en masse, it’s worth considering where Apple
might integrate the technology in the future. Will talking to computers
and devices transcend conventional keyboard or touch input, à la Star
Trek?

Right now Siri is limited to the iPhone 4S. Presumably much of the
reason for that limitation is that Siri requires a lot of computing
power to work. Siri co-founder Norman Winarsky told 9to5 Mac that the
Siri app, originally released in early 2010, required a number of
workarounds and optimizations to work well on the then-current iPhone
3GS’s 600MHz processor. Even with the significant processing boost
gained from the iPhone 4S’s dual-core A5 processor, however, Apple is
still calling the tech a “beta” nearly two years after its first public
release.

Apple has set pretty high expectations for Siri, and it likely didn’t
want to hamper it with compromises to get it to work on older hardware.
After all, the company never quite lived down the mocking it received
for early iterations of the handwriting recognition in its Newton
MessagePad. Though later versions worked quite well (and the technology
was eventually integrated into Mac OS X as Inkwell), its reputation for
completely misinterpreting handwritten words never died.

However, the iPad 2 already has the relatively high powered A5
processor built in, so it’s easy to assume it would be the next iOS
device to get a Siri upgrade. Recent evidence buried in iOS 5 suggests
Apple is already working on an A5-powered Apple TV, perhaps bringing
support for 1080p video to the tiny set-top box. With an A5 processor,
you could potentially tell your Apple TV to play the next episode of
The Venture Bros instead of fumbling with its simplistic remote.
Unfortunately, the iPod touch was passed over for an A5 upgrade for
this holiday season, so it may be as much as a year before the iPod
touch could potentially take advantage of Siri.

While these sound like easy things to pull off, the fact is that that
these devices may not get Siri at allâ€"at least not in the short term.
Besides a relatively beefy processor to power Siri’s natural language
interpreter, it also relies on speech-to-text recognition technology
from Nuance. This works by encoding and sending an audio file to
Nuance’s servers, which return the interpreted text to the iPhone.
Without a constant data connection, Siri doesn’t work, period. iPhones
are rarely without data connections, but the same can’t be said for
WiFi-only iPads and iPod touches. Apple will still need to find a way
to work the feature into these devices in a way that doesn’t frustrate
users when it isn’t available after leaving the range of a convenient
WiFi signal.

Another limitation may also be a device’s included microphone. The
iPhone 4S has, like its iPhone 4 predecessor, a secondary microphone
used to filter background noise. Those with experience using Nuance’s
Dragon speech-to-text products for Windows or Mac OS X are undoubtedly
familiar with the need for a good quality headset to get the best
resultsâ€"and even then accuracy isn’t 100 percent. Given this, we
believe that the relatively low quality microphones in the iPad and
iPod touch again may not give the best results, and could possibly
prevent these devices from using Siri in the near future.

The Apple TV benefits from having a constant network connection for
speech recognition, but Apple would have to build in a microphone that
can filter background noise well enough from approximately 10 feet.
Alternately, the mic could be built into the remote (a suggestion we
had for a speech-powered Google TV). Or, an iPhone could serve as a
voice-activated remote for an Apple TV: “Siri, play season two of Mad
Men on Apple TV.”

More exciting, however, may be the prospect of integrating Siri into
Mac OS X. All current Mac hardware is already capable of doing the
necessary speech-to-text processing locally, so it doesn’t need to be
network-connected for Siri to work. (Siri was originally designed to be
modular, according to Winarsky, so any voice recognition system could
be plugged into it.) Mac OS X already has a fairly rudimentary voice
control system built in, but Siri’s artificial intelligence could take
that to the next level. Imagine firing off tweets as fast as you could
say them, dictating e-mails, searching for airline tickets, and more
simply by telling your Mac want you want and letting Siri do all the
work.
Big predictions meet big skepticism
Big predictions about the importance of Siri are already coming. Cross
Research analyst Shannon Cross believes Siri is a pivotal technology.
“We believe,” Cross wrote in a recent note to clients, “the use of
natural language and potentially the ability to distinguish between
voices could one day change the way we interact with electronic devices
and provide a substantial technology advantage to Apple. Quite simply,
we have not seen a demonstration of comparable AI in any other consumer
system.”

Winarsky is perhaps even more bullish. “Apple will enable millions upon
millions of people to interact with machines with natural language,” he
told 9to5 Mac. “[Siri] will get things done and this is only the tip of
the iceberg. We’re talking another technology revolutionâ€"a new
computing paradigm shift.”

However, the promise of the technology should be tempered with the
realities of human interaction. Ars spoke to some of the creative minds
behind Star Trek about the future of human computer interaction last
year. While visual effects artist Doug Drexler believed voice
interaction held promise, visual artist supervisors Michael and Denise
Okuda were skeptical that it would be as useful as some may hope.

For instance, imagine talking to your cell phone, computer, or other
device in a public space. With even a handful of people talking to
their devices, the cacophony could quickly become a problem. “I don’t
want to hear people’s phone conversations, let alone them talking to
their devices,” Denise Okuda told Ars.

Michael Okuda also noted that voice input is generally inefficient.
“Imagine I’m looking at some photos, and I want to say, ‘Up, up, left,
down one, photo number 3362, no, the one on the left.’â€"that’s much
slower than just clicking or tapping,” he said. “Natural language is, I
think, going to have some significant limitations.”

Still, in the confines of our own homes and offices, Siri’s voice-based
control could shave off a good amount of time performing mundane tasks
like setting reminders or performing searches. And, such control could
make computers and other mobile devices far more powerful for those who
simply can’t use keyboards or touch input due to injury or handicap.

Hello DD,

Thanks for the info and link.

Note: IOMEGA eGO drive. I selected the indented volume first out of the box
and erased the volume. The drive would then not mount. Then I read the
manual [more closely] and the posts and then selected the drive and
partitioned. I still cannot get the drive to partition into 1 solid
partition. I have two seemingly happy 500GB partitions. Time will tell if
IOMEGA is kind to my files and I do not mind two partitions since I get to
have two cool names.

Howdy.

The theoretical size limit at this time is the a lot more than any hard
drive manufactured.

It's millions of terabytes.

Here's an article from Apple's KB:

"Mac OS X: Mac OS Extended format (HFS Plus) volume and file limits"
-Last Modified: July 29, 2008
-Article: HT2422

<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2422>

"Maximum volume size and file size (Mac OS X 10.4 or later) close to 8
EB"

So a 1 TB hard drive should do just fine. On a personal note, I've
frequently formatted drives of 1, 1.5, and 2 TB in size with zero
problems.

Be sure to pick the drive item itself in Disk Utility and do not
select/pick the partition/volume name list below the drive and
indented.

Then click the Partition tab.

Then you must change the Partition Layout popup item from the "Current"
to 1 Partition. You can also choose 2 or more Partitions.

The easily missed part is picking something other than "Current"
partition. This is a sort of "gotcha" of bad design IMO but it is what
it is.

Then click the Options button below the partition window pane. The
Options button does not become available until you change the Partition
Layout from "Current" to something else like 1 Partition.

Pick the GUID in the Options pane but read the short blurb first if
using an older Mac OS on a non Intel Mac.

Then click OK and then click the Apply button. It should take about
15 to 20 seconds to complete.

You can rename the drive after the reformat is complete.

Did you change the Partition Layout item to "1 Partition?"

Re: On/off switches on hard drives

Hello DD and Tod and Randy and anyone else,

Thanks for the information and advice.

Would the sleep mode cause a freeze that requires a "power down the mac"
solution to get the Mac back to operational mode? The only really bad issues
I have had always seem to have a set of sleep messages in the console log.

Just curious, but do the manufactures boxes generally have pictures of the
drive so you can verify that the drive has an on/off switch? Next time I'm
in an Apple store I'll check but I was wondering if someone knows the answer
before I get off work...

Howdy.

My personal experience with external HDs that do not have a true off/on
switch has been uniformly bad.

I've had both Seagate FreeAgent and Western Digital MyBooks externals
and both had problems connected to lack of a true off/on switch. One
of them had a pressure sensitive touch type switch which usually didn't
work. If it did work no one could tell if it was in off or on
position. Just a mess.

I have neighbors with similar externals and with similar problems.

Folks on this groups have also reported problems with external drives
that don't have a true off/on switch.

I recommend against buying this type of drive.

Some external drive cases also have a built in sleep mode that can't be
subordinated to the Mac OS Energy Saving sleep settings. This was
certainly the case (so to speak) with the Western Digital MyBook. As
I've written here often enough that older members will groan at reading
it again, a Western Digital MyBook is the only external I've ever taken
to the garage and reduced to splinters with a 16 lb sledge hammer.
Very satisfying.

Yes. In fact, many Western Digital owners experience this exact
problem.

Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don't.

If the box doesn't have a picture, just ask the salesman if you can
open the box and have a look. I always do, and I can't remember them
ever saying no.

Most drives have on/off switches. Seagate drives sometimes don't,
or they have an odd pressure-sensitive switch that is almost
impossible to use. I avoid Seagate external hard drives for just
this reason alone.

Subject: [macsupport] Upgrade ATT iPhone 4 to 4S unlimited data?

I'm on my 2nd iPhone (started with an iPhone 3, now have an iPhone 4. My recollection was that when the iPhone 4 came out (or perhaps later, when I got mine), ATT no longer offered NEW unlimited data plans. I know I was able to keep unlimited data by adding an additional 2 years to my contract.

Will I be able to keep unlimited data when I upgrade (I'm eligible) to an iPhone 4S? ATT's website doesn't clarify this as far as I can tell.

Thanks so much,
Jim Robertson

Does anyone know what is going to happen to the Mobile Me features of Back to my Mac and synching of things like key chains and Safari bookmarks?

Mobile Me goes away in June 2012. Does anyone know if Apple is planning to support these services through the new iCloud?

Thank you.

Back to Mac and Bookmarks are moved to iCloud along with contacts,
calendars, find my iPhone, and mail. Syncing of Key Chains, passwords,
docks, etc is no longer done.

Any alternative out there to synching of key chains?
