No Internet access w/UVerse

Still trying to help my friend, new to Mac, but can't figure out what's going on. They have AT&T Uverse for TV, phone, Internet. They've talked to AT&T and were on the phone with Apple but to no avail. There must be some simple solution (I hope). With Uverse, apparently they can't just reboot the modem/router. Would reinstalling the OS help? I'm at my wit's end, since I'm the one who pushed them to get the Mac.

An easy solution would be if this is a laptop to take it somewhere
where there is WiFi and see if it works. Do you have WiFi or is it
hard wired to the AT&T gateway? If WiFi then try an Ethernet
connection. If it is WiFi do you have something else that can pick up
the WiFi signal, such as an iPod Touch?
I am 99% sure that you do not have to reinstall the OS. That is a
Windows trick.

I was debating as to whether or not to buy a Thunderbolt cable and opt for the largest external drive I can find to use via Thunderbolt, along with the SSD. Would cost a bundle, but I may do it. This machine has got to settle in for the next 3 years or so.

Nice article, and I like David Pogue.
But whenever people used to ask me why I liked Mobileme, I could only think of two main things:
publishing iWeb sites so easily, and the iDisk, which let me elegantly (via the web) share files with Windows and Mac people.

Those are missing from iCloud. I could care less about sharing my Photos and Music (in fact, I prefer not to) and even my calendar, at my age, isn't so precious. And I'm happy to wait until I'm home to check email. My god, I'm OLD, I guess.

I'm really sorry to lose iDisk's web publishing. At least I'll save $100 per year, I guess that's good, though it was no severe strain.

I'll publish to my domain, and probably use DropBox for file sharing, though it's a pain, in that people have to install Dropbox to get my files.

Any better replacements for iDisk and iWeb site publishing are most welcome.

You raise some good points. I too, will miss web publishing made easy by MobileMe. No matter how much data I have 'on the cloud', I darned sure will have copies at hand as well!

You're not the only old-timer around, I'm up there as well! :)

I liked Mobile Me but wasn't too fond of iWeb. I'm using Sandvox for a new website I'm working on. It provides a bit more flexibility than iWeb, in my opinion. I have my own domain name as well, and that was always a bit troublesome with iWeb.

I don't know why. With my own provider, I could make iWeb point it it and there it would go. My provider is

<http://www.icdsoft.com/>

and there are many others, such as godaddy.com

But if you already have your domain name, then I don't see what could be the probem. Publish your sites to your existing domain mane. I think publishing to Me.com is perhaps a few clicks simpler.

At most.

This is pretty much what the URL ended up like using Mobile Me: http://mydomain.ca/mydomain/Blog/Blog.html--that's too silly to even use.

My own personal site? I can give to you but I haven't used it almost at all, in all these years, because I had me.com. But anway, <http://www.adajessup.com/>

But where I got the host (after acquiring the "adajessup" domain, probably from them as well, was:

<http://www.acdsoft.com> I see that tonight they are updating their web site, but that's a first in the ten years I have been with them. I'll try again tomorrow. They have very good prices and very good interface, and also very good customer support. I'm sure they are suffering through this internet down time!

No, I meant the site you created in iWeb but used with your own domain. I get my domains through 10dollar.ca. I've been using them for years.

Anyway, it doesn't matter since there will be no iWeb.

Barbara,
I created lots of web sites over the years from iWeb to my private doman. I just don't have any up at the moment. It was easy to publish them from iWeb to my domain. Just not QUITE as easy as publishing them to the me.com domain.

There are several external hard drives being sold right now at too-
good-to-be-true prices. Don't jump on the deals if you see them.
Several companies have been stuck with a large backlog of drives that
haven't sold because users have had huge problems with them. An
unreliable hard drive isn't a good deal at any price!

iPad app downloads

Posted by: "Jann Grimes" jannsmailinglists@yahoo.com   jannsmailinglists

We are new to the iPad and don't know how things are done. I wonder if someone could explain how downloading apps works? It seems to take so long to add any apps to our iPad. I had thought downloading them to the computer and syncing would make it happen faster. But that does not seem to work either. It appears the computer downloads it and at the same time the iPad begins downloading it. If it is going to both things at the same time what is the point of syncing?

When we are at home using the home network do the downloads continue, even if it is shut off? By shut off  I mean shut down via the magnet in the folding case/cover we have for it. Between trying new things and all the upgrades that are constantly coming in it seems like it all takes forever. I usually play with it to keep it open when things are downloading but wonder if that is necessary?

Thank you for your time and help.

No. TLA means "Three Letter Acronym." And as we've seen, "HDD" is not
pronounceable and therefore not an acronym.

It could be called a TLI, "Three Letter Initialism." ;-)

Dan: Ok, I bit...but I somehow don't think you're referring to Japan
Tobacco. So, what's a JTI?

Dave: Merriam-Webster allows room for HDD in their definition of
acronym. Initialism may be a better name for it, but acronyms don't
appear to have any sort of pronounceability requirement, at least
according to m-w.

Oh?
I thought it was "three letter abbreviation".
Which it is.

Wikipedia says:
> A three-letter acronym, three-letter abbreviation, or TLA is an abbreviation, specifically an acronym, alphabetism, or initialism, consisting of three letters. These are usually the initial letters of the words of the phrase abbreviated, and are written in capital letters (upper case); three-letter abbreviations such as etc. and Mrs. are not three-letter acronyms.

reCAPTCHA

This is an amazing thing.

This is about those garbled words you figure out to enter some web sites. The CAPTCHAs that prevent bots from doing spam mischief.

A CAPTCHA means Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.

Term coined by several computer guys at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 2000.

reCAPTCHA is a newish variant that is part of a nearly unknown process to digitize books that have been scanned with an OCR program.

A reCAPTCHA has TWO words (instead of one) that you decipher. One of the words may be a word garbled by an OCR program. Humans accessing secure web sites provide a correction for the garbled word.
