Apple’s Employee Donation Program Fetches $2.6 Million for Charity

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 04:10 PM PST

While he contributed seemingly incalculable amounts to technology, Steve Jobs was never known for his philanthropic efforts. There are rumors that the ex-CEO donated money anonymously, but he never used Apple or his celebrity status as a platform for giving.

This is yet another example of the differences between Jobs and his hand-picked successor, Tim Cook. In less than three months as Apple’s CEO, Cook has already implemented an employee donation matching program. And it seems to be yielding impressive results…(...)

How to Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Final With RedSn0w

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 02:33 PM PST

Apple released iOS 5.0.1 to the public today, and with it comes the need to jailbreak. Fortunately, we’ve got that need covered using the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.9b8.

Keep in mind that many are warning those wishing to jailbreak to stay away from iOS 5.0.1 — especially iPhone 4S owners and those who have no way to downgrade firmware back to a prior version.

This is a tethered jailbreak, so those wanting untethered only need not apply. But if you’re happy to use tethered to hold you over until then and if you’ve read all of the warning labels, check out our video tutorial that shows your how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 inside…(...)

Patent Suggests More Touch Gestures Coming to iOS

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 01:26 PM PST

Patent applications are published every day by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, but perhaps none of them are more interesting than those from Apple. The filings give us a glimpse inside the company’s notoriously-private research and development labs.

PatentlyApple reports today that another batch of applications has just surfaced on the USTPO site bearing Apple’s name. While most of the inventions look intriguing, there’s one in particular that stands out above the others. And it involves powerful new touch gestures…(...)

39% of All Pictures Posted to Twitter Come from an iOS Device

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 12:30 PM PST

The Next Web shared the results of a study that shows iOS 5 now is the 7th biggest Twitter photo client, and 39% of all photos posted to Twitter come from an iOS device.

Combined, the iPhone accounts for at least 39% of all photos posted to Twitter, largely due to Instagram and Twitter for iPhone. There are a few percent in the smaller categories like Echofon, Others and Tweetdeck that aren't able to be attributed solely to iOS, as they are multiplatform. With the integration of Twitter into iOS 5, not only did Twitter score themselves a deep toehold on one of the best mobile operating systems around, but it also nearly guaranteed itself longevity.

Not that we need more proof that iOS is the top Operating System for mobile devices out there, but it’s still nice to be reminded every once in a while.

Reminder: Jailbreakers Should Stay Away from iOS 5.0.1

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 11:50 AM PST

We’ve told you before but it doesn’t hurt to say it again… As MuscleNerd just confirmed on Twitter instants ago, and as we told you yesterday, you should stay away from the iOS 5.0.1 update if you are a jailbreaker/unlocker.

Not only iOS 5.0.1 may patch exploits that could potentially allow for an untethered jailbreak, but there is also currently no way to downgrade from iOS 5.0.1 for the time being…(...)

How to Add Custom Weather Notification Center Themes

Apparently I’m not alone in my thoughts about Apple’s stock weather theme for Notification Center — it’s a bit lacking in style.

NC weather widgets is a jailbreak tweak that adds custom Notification Center themes to iOS 5 via WinterBoard with just a few steps.

Step right inside to see how the improved weather icons look like on video…(...)

Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1 to the Public

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 10:39 AM PST

After multiple developer betas, and a series of customer tests, Apple has finally released iOS 5.0.1 to the masses. The update comes just under a month after Apple released iOS 5.0, which included over 200 new features.

Unfortunately, iOS 5 brought with it serious battery problems. And after weeks of complaints, Apple gave an official statement last week that confirmed both the presence of the bugs and the existence of a fix…(...)

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 10:00 AM PST

I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing several great music player apps in the past, including one of my all-time favorites, NowPlayer. The bar has been set pretty high, and a new app, called Reprise, stands out among the competition as a beautiful and powerful music player for the iPhone.

Reprise is centered around shuffling your music. You can easily queue up music to shuffle through, and share what you’re listening to on Twitter and Last.fm. A pixel-perfect design adds new flare to your iPhone’s music library.(...)

Your iPhone Camera Can Follow You Around Using the Awesome Swivl Mount

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 09:00 AM PST

The iPhone’s camera is becoming so good that you can arguably do without a ‘real’ camera these days. Packing a 8 megapixel camera, the iPhone 4S outperforms most point-and-shoot cameras, and it also kicks out some impressive 1080p video.

Unfortunately, your iPhone can’t track your movements, all the while keeping you perfectly framed.

With Swivl, any iPhone can be turned into an auto-tracking camera, and it looks great…(...)

Voice Actor Behind the British Version of Siri Speaks Out

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 08:47 AM PST

An interesting story in The Telegraph this morning features the voiceover artist behind the British version of Siri. The actor was recently contacted by Apple and told to not talk publicly about Siri, but the real kicker is that he didn’t know that he was the voice of Siri in the first place!

In an interview with the actor, Jon Briggs, you get a look into the world of voiceover recordings and some of the history behind how Siri’s voices came to be.(...)
