Confusion on iPhone and Google mail accounts
Posted by: "Norma Steele" noearthspam@gmail.com nosteele
Thu Nov 10, 2011 1:47 am (PST)
I am running into some Calendar sync problems that I am trying to
troubleshoot. I noticed in my iPhone settings|Mail, Contacts and
Calendars that I have two accounts for the same gmail address.
One of the accounts shows xxxx@gmail.com and indicates that Mail, Contacts
and Calendars are enabled for that account listing. When I open that gmail
account in settings I see that it is listed as an Exchange account and
Mail, Contacts and Calendars are set to ON. Going further into the settings
I see that the server is m.google.com. The rest of the info is standard
login and password info plus option to "Use SSL"
The other account is for the same xxxx@gmail.com account but shows Myname
Gmail and indicates that Notes only are turned on for that account.. When
I open that gmail account in settings I see that it is listed as Gmail and
only Notes are turned on. When I go into the next screen it states Gmail
Account Information with my name, gmail address, password and description
and there is an Outgoing Mail Server setting of smtp.gmail.com
Why are there two different gmail listings for the same gmail address and
which account is needed to sync third party calendar apps such as Calengoo
and Pocket Informant with Google Calendar?
Can anybody help a very confused person?

Thank you LauraV, yes that is wahat I am referring to. And I ask again, has anyone who has tried adjusting that option noticed any change in the audio when making changes to this? I do not hear improvements with earphones, external, or internal speakers.

Yes you do. For me I have a tendency to want to turn up bass and trebble. Leave mid range set in the middle.

Appcessories coming to Apple Stores?

Apple Stores? via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 11/10/11
No, it⒠s not a typo in the headline. Appcessories, third-party hardware
add-ons for your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad that interact with your
device through dedicated apps, could soon be featured more prominently
in Apple Stores, if there⒠s any substance to T3⒠s report. Citing
Jawbone⒠s vice president and head of special projects Bandar Antabi,
the publication speculates Apple could in the near future expand its
retail experience with a new section dedicated to app-connected
hardware. According to Antabi:
Appcessories are going to play a significant role in the future of
smartphones and applications. We will begin to see more and more
companies integrate applications with accessories and other devices
that can complement your smartphone experience. [...] There is a lot of
motivation for retailers to create specific appcessory sections within
their storefronts to better promote this growing range of products.
Disregarding the craziness of the appcessories term itself, it would
indeed be prudent of Apple to promote app-connected hardware, as they
have done in the past with similar sections dedicated to the iPod
lifestyle. Still, take this report with a pinch of salt because T3⒠s
track record is not so great. Also, it⒠s not like Jawbone⒠s executive
would be informed of Apple⒠s retail strategy, let alone comment
publicly on it.

The article says it will take some time before it is available to everyone OTA. I did it the old way by connecting to my computer. Remember, you have to be on WiFi to do OTA updates.

OTA update only works over WiFi and rolls out slowly and is only a delta
update (~55MB) - the "full" version is available via iTunes and is between
700-900MB depending on device model.

Apple patent roundup: Dual OLED backlit iPad 3, speakers for iPod na
Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com boulware0224
Thu Nov 10, 2011 11:43 am (PST)
http://feedproxy.google.com/ ~r/9To5Mac- MacAllDay/ ~3/S_IbdY8DxEo/
Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple patent roundup:
Dual OLED backlit iPad 3, speakers for iPod nano, and swipe and hold
iOS gestures via 9to5Mac by Jordan Kahn on 11/10/11
There has been no shortage of Apple patent applications published by
the US Patent & Trademark Office today (via PatentlyApple). Three of
the most interesting with potential to be implemented in upcoming
products include a dual OLED backlighting system for future iPads,
integrated speaker clip for iPod nano, and new hold and swipe gestures
for iOS devices.
First up we have a patent application that backs up a report from
DigiTimes claiming Apple is considering alternative backlighting
systems with a dual-LED light bar design for iPad 3. PatentlyApple
outlines the application which details use of multiple OLED backlights
not only in a future iPad, but also potentially in a next-gen iPhone,
Cinema Display, MacBook, and iMac.
The report also claims Apple mentions ⒠television in passing⒠ within
the application, while quoting an announcement from DuPont regarding
new AMOLED processing technology, PatentlyApple says that tech is
already being supplied to Asian AMOLED manufacturers. Apple⒠s
alternative backlight solutions could also lead to an overall thinner
design:
⒠The bonding of the OLED backlight in the LCD may also increase the
mechanical rigidity of the LCD, which may enable the use of thinner
glass substrates and possibly reduce the thickness of the overall
device. Further, an OLED backlight may generally be thinner than a
typical LED backlight, and may also provide improved light uniformity
without the use of light guides or additional brightness enhancing
films.⒠
Details on iPod nano speaker patent and swipe and hold iOS gestures
below the fold.
Next up, the proposed speaker for iPod nano (and shuffle), which would
essentially build a small integrated piezoelectric speaker into a clip
similar to the nano⒠s existing clip. Not just any speaker, however,
according to PatentlyApple the company plans on using Kapton polyimide
film in the design, which among other things, was used as thermal
insulation on space suits and NASA⒠s Apollo lunar module. This would
definitely be welcomed for nano users who listen to music in situations
when wearing headphones might be dangerous or distracting. It would
also be suitable for voice-control features.
Finally we have a patent application detailing a set of new gestures
that will allow you to manipulate objects in order to enhance their
visibility. These add to the mid-drag and micro gestures discovered in
April, and gestures based on physical metaphors from July. The new
gestures are based around holding and swiping (or swiping then
holding), and seem to be specifically suited for smaller displays where
pinching and multiple finger gestures can be awkward or block info.
There is also mention of an Android-like tilt to zoom feature using the
device⒠s accelerometer. PatentlyApple explains:
⒠In one example, a user may perform a ⒠swipe then hold⒠ touch input
gesture, leaving a finger on the display screen of the electronic
device. The electronic device then may pan and zoom onto any objects
along a direction vector of the user⒠s swipe gesture or, more
generally, along a directional path associated with the user⒠s swipe

How to Get Apple⒠s First Over-the-Air iOS Update

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: How to Get Apple⒠s
First Over-the-Air iOS Update via Mashable! by Christina Warren on
11/10/11
Apple pushed out iOS 5.0.1 to users Thursday, following weeks of
complaints over lower-than-expected battery life.
The release is important ⒠ not just because it is the first step toward
solving a very real problem ⒠ but because it was the first test of
Apple⒠s new over-the-air (OTA) update system.
By delivering updates OTA, users don⒠t have to worry about connecting
to a computer or iTunes to get the latest software. As long as an iOS
device is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery life (or is
plugged into a power outlet), it can receive the update, no computer
required.
This process goes a long way toward streamlining the post-PC future.
Getting the Update
You can manually check for iOS updates by going to the Settings app and
selecting ⒠General⒠ and ⒠Software Update.⒠ This will query Apple⒠s
servers. If an update is found, you are given the option to download
and install the file.
Apple will also alert users of system updates, the same way it does in
Mac OS X.
Apple⒠s roll-out for the 5.0.1 update was fairly fast. In New York
City, I was able to get the update OTA almost immediately. It took my
colleagues in California a bit longer ⒠ perhaps an hour ⒠ to receive
the update.
My own non-scientific polling on Twitter makes it look like Apple
issued the update to all phones, on all carriers, at the same time.
Installing the Update
After downloading the file, your device will instruct you that it needs
to restart. This is similar to what happens doing the traditional
iTunes-tethered update procedure.
After a restart, the new update is loaded and the device should appear
unchanged. The only difference: this time iPad 1 users have multi-touch
gesture support and iPhone users should get better battery life.
A Difference in File Sizes
One of the most interesting aspects of the OTA update process is the
difference in file size. Downloading the update for my iPhone 4S OTA,
my download size was 55.5MB. The full download via iTunes direct from
Apple⒠s servers is 852.5MB.
The same discrepancy is also true for the iPad. Why the difference?
In order to minimize download times and server load, Apple has likely
optimized its update process to deliver just the files that need to be
altered via OTA update. Meanwhile, the iTunes version of the update
includes the full version of the OS installation image. We⒠ve asked
Apple for confirmation and will update this story with the response.
For most users, it will be faster to update their devices OTA than by
using iTunes, thanks to this smaller download size.
Minimum Battery Requirements
Although Apple recommends that users download an OTA update to their
device with it plugged into power, as long as the battery is at least
50% charged, it will install without a hitch.
If a device doesn⒠t have enough of a charge, iOS will refuse to install
the update. (Thanks, @AaronSkwarcan)
Going Off Without a Hitch
Early reports indicate that iOS OTA updates are installing without a
hitch. I polled my Twitter followers, asking about any problems, and
aside from needing to be connected to Wi-Fi or plugged into power, no
one reported any issues.
How did your iOS OTA update process go? Let us know in the comments.

My iPad updated fine ... no problem. Did it through iTunes
Tried the same with the iPhone, and it bombed out twice. After first time, I made doubly sure Lion was up to date, and tried again. iTunes is up to date.
I got "unknown error (1654). I could not find that error code listed anywhere.

Well it is completed ... I had to do a restore, and it installed 5.0.1.
My phone's screen seems brighter and crisper ...

I updated iPhone 4s via WiFi... it took about 10 minutes--maybe 12.
Then updated iPad 2 via WiFi... took just under 10 minutes.
As Alice said: "very cool." Ditto!
Just to reiterate what we did... go to > Settings > General > Software Update... you're there! This is about the easiest update I've ever done on an iProduct... EVER!
If this is the future, I'm ready!

Updates over the air are awesome. Much faster and smoother than the old way. Both the iPhone and iPad updated in less than 10 minutes!!! Great first Experience.
