I just had the same thing happen here. I had enabled iCloud contacts sync in the system preference, but apparently not in Address Book. Boom, two of (most) everything.

It makes sense in a way, since we are switching on a different set of contacts. If you click on the red tab at the top of the "book" to view groups, you can simply select the "All iCloud" group and be done. Then you'll be working with just the set of contacts on iCloud.

If you really don't want duplicates, you could select "All on My Mac", select all the contacts on the list, and hit Delete. I'm about to try that. But first go to File > Export > Address Book Archive... just in case. Also, look for weird stragglers. Of 300 or so contacts, I had 2 that hadn't updated yet (because I thought everything was syncing) and 3 others that didn't match up exactly.

ps- I've also turned off Google sync right now. I'm hoping iCloud contacts still count as "local" at least enough to sync back out to Google. I'll wipe everything and re-populate on the Google side if I have to. We'll see.
