Duplicate entries on sync

one iCloud account anywhere?

Try creating "traceable" items that contain the information about
precisely who created them, where and when, and then trace it's
replication on other instances... does it appear instantly as a dupe
everywhere, when is it duplicated on the original machine, and so on...

--

Without specifically including iCloud here, the issues may be the same,
more specifically ical calendars... at least this is my experience.
I think what is happening is that all the sets of calendar events get
pooled into 1 calendar, the one you are looking at, and unless you both
subscribe and publish the same calendar (ok, use 1 account only) with
editing access, the calendar syncing is still reading both users' events
and treating them as unique entries.

My wife has the iMac with "her" computer's calendars and syncing with
"my" mobileme calendar in her iCal app.
I have "my" calendar from my computer and my mobileme calendar synced on
my iCal app.

This is how we originally got duplicates of all events.
We changed this by NOT using "Calendar on this computer" (on both
computers) at all, and moving all the events to the online synced
mobileme calendar. That way we are both accessing 1 calendar set
(mobileme) which is set to allow either one of us to edit. Then when we
login online, or our respective computers, or on our phones, it is just
the one calendar set that comes up, without duplicate events occurring.

While not the best solution perhaps, it works for now. Neither one of us
is running Lion, and won't be for some time, so this solution works for
now until we can come up with something directly with iCloud that works
with SnowLeopard. IIRC, there was supposed to be an iCloud solution for
SnowLeopard in the works, but not sure of release date or specific features.

I'm puzzled about one aspect of the cool Stickies shortcut, and curious
about another:

In Mac OS X 10.6.9, using Mail.app as the source, if I highlight
text/graphics and use the Services... Menu I can create the Sticky.
On my Mac Pro, there's not keystroke equivalent for this Service listed.
However, if I open Services Preferences, the item "Make New Sticky Note" is
selected as active, and the <Command-Shift-Y> keyboard shortcut is listed.
So, why does selecting the service from the menu work, but the keystroke
shortcut NOT work?

Second, isn't MS Office 2011 a suite of Cocoa apps? In other words,
shouldn't this work in, say, Outlook 2011

I guess that it is indeed the lack of "cocoa" compatibility. Need to go through an intermediary I guess.

Re: FaceTime on iPhone 4s?

Daly asked: > Why is FaceTime better than iChat?

FaceTime apparently will not work on lesser model phones than iPhone4.
iChat has been around a long time and can work on older Macs and phones
too. The video portion was handled by whatever camera was attached to
the computers, either built in or external. Video chatting was an
option. I don't believe you needed an Apple ID to run iChat, as you
apparently do with FaceTime.
I can't say whether iChat worked on other phones, iPhone or otherwise,
but it is commonly used as a chat app. between computers. Members still
had to create an iChat account and could use their existing chat
accounts such as AIM to login.

Still not clear if FaceTime uses data or voice bandwidth, or some of both.

Thank you Jay and Randy - I knew you'd have the answers...
I checked out a few and spent the $.99 on ABBYY CardHolder, not their
fully featured Business Card Reader... and CamCard Lite.
Both have some neat features, but I have yet to explore them all. I am
hoping that I can also import already-taken photos into one of these or
other applications and then run it through the OCR before starting a new
database...
I also want to find an app that can run on my computer (Not Apple's
Contacts) that can make those card collections as visible and editable
on my Mac, and that they can then be synced between those devices. Sure,
not for $6.99, I'd be happy to pay more for something that would do that
job...
CardHolder seems to do the basics I want and I don't need the features
such as export to Contacts, pinpoint location on GoogleMaps, and find in
Facebook or Trwitter; CamCard Lite has a nice feature of not using the
flash as such, but turning on the LED to illuminate the card being
photographed. The CamCard folks also have a CamScan app thay may prove
handy...
I'll keep checking this out, now I'm at least on the right track.

Cheers

Excel 2008 for Mac question

Hello:

I know there¹s a way to do this, but I can¹t for the life of me remember
how. And the ³Help² isn¹t of any help...

In Excel, how does one search a document for duplicate entries? (And purge
all but one?)

Thanks in advance!

Mail 3.6 password problem

Posted by: "michael kaplan" view@att.net   mkaplan22

Wed Nov 2, 2011 10:25 am (PDT)

For the last several days I've been getting the following message in
Mail Version 3.6. This message repeats every few minutes when Mail is
left open.

"The POP server pop.att.yahoo.com rejected the password for user xxxx@att.net
"

I've entered my password, checked the box marked "remember this
password in your keychain", restarted Mail and restarted the computer
several times.

Any suggested fix for this? Is this a problem with Yahoo or my computer?

May be a known issue having to do with timing. Some mail servers don't respond fast enough for Mail. I had this problem particularly with Verizon a while back. It can come and go with varying loads on mail servers. From earlier thread on this list:

"...[go] into the Keychain application, located in the Utilities
folder. In the upper left column, highlight "log-in." In the lower
left column, highlight "passwords." In the right window scroll until
you find your "mail.comcast.net and smtp.comcast.net" or whatever your
internet service provider incoming/outgoing mail servers are called.
Double click on each which will bring up an attributes/access control
window. Select access control. Then select the bullet next to "allow
all applications to access this item." Make sure you do this for both
the incoming server (mail.comcast.net) and outgoing server
(smtp.comcast.net) keychain items. "

If you do a Google search on the relevant terms, you may find updates on this problem. There are other potential causes as well, include a corrupt keychain. Do search of fixing corrupt keychain and try those fixes as well.

Cheers,
tod

Sorting In Launchpad

Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net   hflaxman001

Wed Nov 2, 2011 11:06 am (PDT)

I gave up on using Launchpad almost as soon as I tried to. One main reason is that it appears to have no sort order at all, and no way to do it.

I've been using stacks to launch apps almost as long as the concept was introduced. At least it's in alpha order.

I can find no logical sort order for the Launchpad, nor any way to specify it.

The question is as it alludes to, is there a way to sort the order of items in the Launcpad?

It's a confusing way to view apps if there is no way.

TIA

Harry

Oh I can get the folders down, but just bringing it up shows no order. It would be up to the user to drag things around, I'm assuming. Kind of defeats the purpose.

I stick with my stacks!

1. If you are not already an Administrator-level User, then go to System Preferences - Users and Groups: create a new user (yourself) and give it administrative privileges.

2. Log in as administrator

3. Delete his login in System Preferences - Users and Groups

Kay, was your question ever answered?

I just received this massage on my iPhone (12 days late apparently) and it never arrived on my Zmac at all.

help with permissions.

hello group,

i would like some help with permisssions on my 2010 mac pro quad core
2.8 with os x 10.6.8.

first i will admit i know very little about permissions and how they
are applied to various accounts.

until recently doing some apple software updates the repair
persmissions log would show a short list of items that apple says is
ok to ignore. since the updates there is a very long list and the
permissions are reset so only the system can read and write to
everything on the disk. so i need to change things back for me to be
able do my work.

when i am making the changes back to read and write sometimes it asks
if i want to make me the owner. what does that mean? what would be
the result of saying yes?

the software updates include the latest security update, os 10.6.8 v
1.1 (for updating to lion), iphoto, imovie.

there are four accounts on this machine - myself (admin), another
user, an account for guests and another called guest (disabled).

i little while back i wrote about not being able to start up in safe
mode could this persmission issue contribute to this? i followed the
suggestions from the group to correct this boot difficulty without
success.

thank you for your time and assistance.

Sorry this is such short notice but I've just found out that Channel 4 (UK)
is showing a programme tonight at 11:05 pm GMT,
Steve Jobs: iChanged the World.

I don't know the origin of the programme or where else it's being shown.
