Kathy,
The color calibration system built into the Mac OS is very simplified and designed to make very approximate color corrections. It is also subjective, one person's settings will differ from the next person's.
Hardware calibration systems adjust the color look up tables for a monitor to a clear standard. Before I bought Pantone's Huey calibrator (one of many on the market) my prints did not look like my screen images because the printer was calibrated and the monitor was not. I wasted lots of paper, ink, and Photoshop time getting good prints. Now that my monitor is calibrated, I usually am happy with my first print.
There are monitor calibrators that are less than $100. If you are serious about your photography and want to print your images or put them on the web so that they have the colors that you want, a calibration tool is worth the money.
I'm not familiar with WHCC, but I hope that they clearly tell you what color space to used for the digital images that you send them (eg., sRGB). If your monitor is calibrated, the prints you get back from them should match your monitor.
Just my advice,
Gordon

If the policy reverts to the former, it would be a good idea to not publicize the fact. If a spammer knows that they need to post at least one "legitimate" message before being unmoderated, they will often do that to get access to the group.

Subject: [macsupport] Notice of moderation policy change

Hi everyone,
A few years back, there was a debate on the Mac Support Central group about its moderation policy. After a good discussion, it was decided that new members would enter the group with moderated status, which would be changed once they would make at least one productive post. This would prevent anyone from getting in and posting spam instantly.
However... I made it a condition that the team of moderators would have to give people full posting rights as soon as they would contribute to the group. The principle is to give people freedom to post, so that they can get help as soon as they need it, without barriers. An underlying idea is that we are NOT going to turn into a fully moderated group.
With such principles in mind, the moderation policy failed. We still have a long backlog of members who are under moderation despite everything stated above.
Part of the blame goes to me for not always stepping in, day in and day out, to change the status of people. Part of the blame goes to my fellow moderators, who approve messages from new members without changing their posting rights.
But don't spend too much time thinking about the above paragraph. Starting from now, all new members will automatically have the right to post to Mac Support Central, without moderation. If they post spam, they will be removed quickly.

I ran a list from 1994 to 2011 with the "open status" policy and it
worked really well, for two reasons:
1. The list ethic was strong enough to be shared by all who valued
its service.
2. Anyone starting any monkey business was immediately "fried" in
public by myself, the self-appointed "Moderating Dictator"
Speak softly, carry a big stick approach. :D
In all those years, amongst thousands of list members, only five
people were ever publicly fried.

Filevault in Snow Leopard

I recall there being problems using Filevault in some of the OS X versions, but don't remember the details. It seems quite reliable in Lion. How reliable is it in Snow Leopard, 10.6.8?
TIA,
Bill

Firewall In Lion

I did a clean install of Lion yesterday on one of my external drives. I noticed something the tI never really checked before: the firewall is turned OFF by default after the install!! It was for me anyway.
I checked it on my working system and it was off as well.
Has anyone else noticed this??
M$ was criticized on this about setting this as default in XP.

Jim,
In one of Pogue's missives, he complimented Apple for the security measures they took, firewall on for instance. Seems those days are gone for some reason. Maybe an oversight.
I own Little Snitch anyway, so I wasn't too worried about it.

Look for the "Forgot Password" button. Your user is the email you used to establish the account. It's always possible you have more than one.
In iTunes, the controls are in the upper right on the black bar. If you are logged in, it shows you user name. If not, it says "sign in". Click to pull down and menu with several option. If you want to add a second user, you can select "logout" and then "login" as another user.
Your other users are likely the same. I think an iTunes user is a "master" user, as in you can use it for all the other services. I could be wrong as I don't use the other services.
Cheers,
tod

I've been using Calibre since it came out. At one point it would actually sync with iPod Touch's and such, but Apple requested that the developer no longer allow that to happen. Then, we did things wirelessly with Stanza. Worked like a charm!

Update on Ipad status.
Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to have to find someone to fix
it. After 5 days in the bag of rice it still isn't working.
The iPad is recognized by the computer and can sync. In fact I have
backed up and imported the pictures on the iPad. However I can not
get the screen to come on.
Anyone have any other suggestions other than bringing into Apple. Are
there any repairs shops specializing in repairing wet iPads. For
those of you who have suggested taking it apart, I don't see any
screws to take apart the iPad.
Regards,
Jay

When you open a blank or a reply email you should see at the top a series of icons. The first one is for the address book. It has a gray picture of a person on it.

Strange, that is a default icon in my mail and I am running Lion. However, go up to the top bar where the icons are and right click on it and come down where it says customize toolbar. You should find that icon there. The picture of a person is just the head and shoulders by the way.

Synchronization difficulties
Posted by: "Bill Morton" billmorton999@gmail.com redpup99
Thu Nov 10, 2011 10:30 am (PST)
Somehow, I have created the situation where the "contacts"
list on my MacBook Pro (Lion, 10.7.2) has double entries for
each entry--in other words it's twice as long as it should be.
Both of the doublets are identical.
My Iphone has the correct contacts list with no duplicates.
Is there a way to force a synchronization and tell it
to use the iPhone's data, regardless, in order to bring
the MacBook to the correct level?
I'm a little afraid now to just plug the phone into the
MacBook because it will start to synchronize, and
I fear that it may double the contacts on the iPhone
as well. But I have to be able to synch the two
eventually.

I would like to go the nontraditional route and selfpublish in a nonbook form. I would like to make my manuscript available for purchase.
Has anyone experience with this? I presume that I would have to obtain software (beyond Word, which I have) in order to upload a product to a provider.
Not that I would necessarily ultimately want to end up there, but how could I get a business like Amazon to sell my ebook?
I just starting to explore this. Thanx. Oneal
